Gort Gower, the cottage with one of the most stunning views in all of Ireland
Valentia Island is a beautiful place and if you are visiting southwest Ireland, don't miss this lovely traditional cottage. To wake up to the views from the upstairs bedroom is something I will remember for a long time to come. The cottage is cosy, comfortable and well equipped. It has a private off street parking area next to the cottage that can take two cars side by side. You can dine alfresco in the garden (we had sunshine every day) and Glanleam beach is five minutes' drive away for a dip. Not far from the cottage you can see a trail of fossilised Tetrapod foot prints. At 385 million years old, this was an animal that long pre dated the dinosaurs.

Thanks for your comments, glad that you enjoyed the cottage and Valentia Island. It really is a remarkable view from the cottage and the island has so many special things to do and discover... such as the Tetrapod track way! Glanleam beach is one of our favourites as well and we look forward to welcoming you again one day.

We had a wonderful stay - the location of the cottage is second to none, with magnificent views and easy access to walks, cycling and exploring. The cottage was comfortable, but basic. The main problem was damp and an infestation of millipedes - which we befriended and got used to clearing up regularly, but really need dealing with! (For this reason I have scored it lower than I otherwise would, and could not recommend it to a friend until its dealt with)

Thanks so much for your comments - I'm glad you enjoyed your holiday and the cottage. I understand that some very wet weather was the reason for the millipedes seeking shelter, I hope that this wasn't too much of an inconvenience during your stay. Although this does appear to have been a highly unusual set of weather conditions, our housekeeper and gardener had also investigated and took steps to tackle but we will monitor and look into any further preventative action we can take.

Beautiful location with the most amazing views. Lovely cottage over 200 years old.
This cottage has the most amazing views and is only a few minutes drive from Knightstown village. It's a lovely, quaint cottage upgraded over the years. At the moment it could do with just a little TLC - a lick of paint, etc. but even as it is, it is a comfortable place to stay. I'd love to go back there again!

Ferienhaus

Beautiful Location
Gort Gower has the most glorious vista looking east to Cahirsiveen and north to the Dingle peninsula. The cottage is very well equipped and comfortably accommodated 4 adults and a teenager. The beds are particularly comfortable. We received a very warm welcome from Maureen. The cottage is the ideal base for exploring Valentia and the wonderful coastal scenery of this part Kerry

Thank you for your review so glad you enjoyed your holiday and our cottage hope to see you again one day. (Translation below) A lovely little cottage that has everything you need for a relaxed family holiday. Quiet location with a fantastic view. Washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, good beds, small garden behind the house. We had always left the door open for breakfast and were able to look on the small bays mountain and island world of the neighboring islands with their interesting shapes and colors.

Beautiful Location
Gort Gower cottage has the most glorious vista looking east to Cahirsiveen and North to the Dingle peninsula. We received a very warm welcome from Maureen. The cottage is well equipped with comfortable beds, though a shower curtain wouldn't go astray. A great base to explore the outstanding coastal beauty of this part of Kerry.

Gort Gower
We spent a lovely week at this cosy and comfortable cottage on Valentia Island. The view from outside the cottage was incomparable and clearly popular with all who passed by. The cottage was clean, the beds were comfortable and the linen fresh and up-to-date and there were plenty of towels, most of which we didn't get round to using. There were also some very nice touches in the cottage such as the better than average art work on the walls, the peat waiting by the fire and, actually, the traditional Irish statues and crosses dotted about, reminding me of childhood holidays in Ireland. The kitchen had everything we needed although I would caution against leaning over to open the top right hand cupboard while the near side ring is switched on ( singed fleece). To sum up, a well situated traditional cottage with a good feel to it.

Gort Gower, Vantentia
Gort Gower, on Valentia Island, Co.Kerry is a beautiful old fashioned cottage in a stunning location. My family and I spent a week there in August and had a very pleasant stay. The cottage is very well equipped, however lacks all mod cons... Maureen will look after any need you have and is a credit to the owners...

About the neighbourhood
Situated in the beautiful south west corner of County Kerry, Valentia Island has been a popular location for holidaymakers for many years. The island lies within the gulf stream and consequently the climate is mild throughout the year. Valentia is linked to the mainland by the bridge at Portmagee and by a small roll-on roll-off ferry that runs continuously during high season and links Knightstown on Valentia to Cahirciveen. Valentia is a great place to walk, cycle and take in the stunning scenery. At Valentia museum just outside Knightstown you can discover the history of the isalnd including the transatlantic cable station, the world famous slate quarry and the recently discovered Tetrapod Trackway or dinosaur footprints! It is also in a great location on the Ring of Kerry to explore picturesque towns and villages and beautiful beaches such as Ballinskelligs and Derrynane. There are day trips available by boat from April to late September to the famous Skellig rocks - Skellig Michael was home to some of the earliest monastic settlements in Ireland and Small Skelling is a sanctuary to fantastic numbers of birdlife - the puffin is closely associated with the rocks and the Skelligs Experience heritage centre on Valentia (open April to November) brings the sights and sounds of Skelligs to life. There are many excellent restaurants and bars on Valentia, Cahirciveen and Portmagee - seafood and fish are a speciality in many of them.

How to get there
From the UK there are regular flights from London (Luton) to Kerry County airport also known as Farranfore or Killarney airport. Car hire is available at the airport. The drive to Valentia will take you approximately 1½ hours. There are also a number of operators flying to Cork airport with a connecting drive of approximately 3 hours. Flights can be booked with Ryan Air via their website. Another popular option is to travel by sea - approximately 3 hours from Fishguard in Wales to Rosslare in County Wexford or Irish Ferries which sails from Pembroke to Rosslare. This is an excellent choice if you would like to take in the stunning scenery on the drive through to Kerry.
