Or this peaceful setting is ideal for a quiet get away. Spend the day by the pool or relaxing in the garden. Or visit one of the many beaches most of which are just a 40 minute drive. Also perfectly located for those who wish to explore the area or to just relax and enjoy the weather! With beautiful sunny days throughout the year this makes it a perfect location for walking and cycling and enjoying the surrounding countryside and for visiting the many beautiful towns and villages. What's in the area?: With just a 40 minute drive north west to the Atlantic coast you will find the sunny beaches of Fouras and Chatelaillon Plage. And to the south west, still just 40 minutes, there are the beautiful beaches of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne and St Palais-sur-Mer. With many more but unfortunately we haven't visited them all! With wonderful shops to browse round at Ile de Martin and an amazing choice of pavement cafes and restaurants, all looking on to the harbour. Ile de Re has many beautiful beaches and more wonderful quaint villages to wonder around.More
Heel hartelijke ontvangst met lekkernij zoals zelfgemaakte confituur, stokbrood, boter, wijn, fruitsap, balsamico-azijn, peper en zout... handig als je laat toekomt.
Heel aangenaam huis, praktisch ingedeeld.

Thank you for taking the time to write a reply. We appreciate all feedback. We are so sorry you felt this way about the pool and Wi-Fi. We have specific times for the pool as we have 2 gites and do not wish anyone to be disturbed late into the evening. It is also to allow us to add chemicals to maintain the pool and also to allow us to cover the pool at night in an attempt to maintain the temperature. We never enforced the times with your boys even when they were using the pool a long time after our suggested pool closing time, and delayed covering the pool until after the boys had finished using it in the evening. Unfortunately with respect to the Wi-Fi we are in rural France and internet connection is just not great. We sincerely hope this did not affect your holiday at la Petite Bergerie. Kind regards Catherine and Terry

We stayed at La Bergerie as a party of 4 adults and two babies in early September.
The owner (Catherine) went out of her way to ensure we had everything we needed for the babies - travel cost, high chair, baby seat etc which was great and meant we could pack less stuff.
We got the overnight ferry from St. Malo and drove down. It took us Mayne 4-5 hours, although it was our first proper time in France and with babies we were stopping every 5 minutes so I'm sure we could do it a fair bit quicker.
The house itself was really nicely done out, very peaceful and had pretty much anything you could possibly need to just turn up and enjoy a self catering holiday.
We found a few good things to visit locally (we drove to them but could have walked to some of them had we not had kids and a pregnant traveller!). I don't think there is really much of a town or village within a sensible walking distance (hence it's very peaceful!) Although we regularly drove down to the very beautiful Saint Savinien - a small town with some very old parts to it - which was only 5 minutes (literally) in the car. There we found bakeries, banks, supermarkets, bars, restaurants etc - basically everything needed.
We visited the Chateau De Crazannes (about 5 mins away) which was beautiful and had lots of history.
There's a little sculpture trail around the nearby old quarry which our toddler loved.
The port town of La Rochelle was Maybe 40 mins by car and worth a visit.
The highlight for us was visiting Il de Rey - which was maybe an hour away. Its an island accessible only via a really long man made bridge (with a toll fee of about £7 return) and is well worth a whole day to explore - beaches, shops, harbour, vineyards, lots of cycling etc.
Saintes is a decent size town about 15/20 mins away by car and was another great place to visit - it had a fabulous market on the day we visited, with some amazing produce. There's an impressive cathedral, lots of shopping and eating, boat trips on the river etc. We also visited the remains of a Roman amphitheatre there, which was really worth a visit.
In terms of food shopping, we visited the 'Super U' supermarket at St. Savinien which had everything needed.
2 of our party managed to wangle an evening meal out and Catherine very kindly offered to pick us up at 10pm which was very helpful.
We stayed at La Bergerie for 10 nights and would recommend it highly.
The only very slight down side was that there wasn't any town nearby which was sensible walking distance, although with young children, this was not a major issue for us. But for a relaxing getaway, it was brilliant.

A lovely week at La Petite Bergerie with our 2 children aged 2 and 4. The gite itself has been beautifully renovated - even better than the photos on the website. The living room / kitchen is a great space with everything you need (including English speaking TV and washing machine) and upstairs the 3 bedrooms all have beautiful decor. Even the cot bed for our 2 year old had a decent mattress on it instead of the normal cardboard type ones. Everything was spotless. Catherine and her family were around for any questions / advice but didn't intrude at all on the holiday.
Pool and garden toys were a great addition - pool slightly on the cooler side but we didn't have great weather. Still had good use of it and warmed up once we were in. Kids didn't seem to notice!
We were there for a wedding at le Petit Moulin near Annepont midweek but had the rest of our time to explore the area. Would recommend Saintes (nice pedestrianised shopping streets, plenty of places to eat and a lovely park with playground for the kids) , had a lovely EUR15 3 course lunch at la gabarier in the next town of port d'envaux (thoroughly recommend and they even had a kids menu), visited the beach at saint palais sur mer on market day. Boats at St Savinien were great and a hit with the boys. Good new supermarket there too.

Really enjoyed our holiday in this fantastic converted barn. Loved exploring the area around Crazanne but because the weather was so hot really enjoyed relaxing at the pool.
Catherine was very welcoming and very helpful .
Would certainly recommend this property .

We've just got back yesterday from spending a week at La Petite Bergerie.
The gite is the best one we have stayed in- well equipped kitchen. Lovely decor. Very quiet. Great swimming pool for the children.
Great location for exploring the region.

Man sitzt dort sehr schön.

We stayed here over a long weekend to attend a family wedding in the area and found it to be very well equipped and spotlessly clean. The family all commented on the efficiency of the showers and it was great to have two bathrooms including a proper bath in one and a walk in shower in the other.
The garden and swimming pool area is fabulous, sadly we only managed to sit out on the first afternoon before it rained for the rest of the weekend. We all said it would be a lovely place to stay in good weather.
We weren't able to explore much as the wedding lasted for two days, however the surrounding villages were very quiet and pretty.
We found Catherine to be very kind and helpful, when our baby grandson became unwell with a chest infection, she was sympathetic and didn't hesitate to offer her assistance.
I would definitely recommend this property, it has plenty of character and is what I'd describe as 'the right side of rustic'.

We spent a lovely week at the gite, unfortunately the weather wasn't so lovely but this made us get out more to explore the area.
The gite was spotlessly clean on our arrival, and Catherine the owner was there to greet us.
The whole property is beautifully and tastefully decorated, with lovely antique French furniture in the bedrooms. The open plan downstairs area was very spacious, and the kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need.
A visit to the Roman amphitheatre at Saintes is a must, also the aquarium at La Rochelle. The beaches near St Palais sur Mer are excellent, especially the walk through the sand dunes to get there. (Avoid the town if you don't like tourist resorts though!).
Unfortunately we didn't get to use the pool much due to the weather, but it's a lovely pool. We went for a walk around Crazannes every evening after dinner, it's a beautiful little village.
Only downside is the wifi was quite weak so it was difficult to plan walks, places to visit and check the weather forecast (we normally do this using the internet once we get somewhere and plan our days accordingly), so maybe a few maps or books about the local area would be a good idea (there were however plenty of leaflets for attractions).
But overall a lovely holiday in a great house and location, we didn't want to leave!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely review, we're delighted you enjoyed your stay here.
Just a note for our future guests regarding the wifi. Wifi is always an issue in rural France however as we explained to our guests I had made an error and had accidentally placed our router behind a 2 foot thick wall!! Once I understood my error I immediately put it in the correct place and I believe that the connection was greatly improved! Proof of which was that we had a family of 6 in the following week 3 of whom were teenagers and there didn't seem to be a problem!
We do provide a huge amount of leaflets for all the attractions in the area and a Lonely Planet Guide to France and there is of course French TV available ideal for local weather.

This is a wonderful place to stay! We were made to feel very welcome by the owners upon arrival. Our gite was beautifully restored by the owners and had everything we could have needed. It was extremely clean and well cared for.
We enjoyed the gardens. We were fortunate to be there at the peak of the rose blooming season which made this property all the more lovely to live in for a week. There is a pool with very comfortable lounge chairs and dining table. It is as if set in the middle of a garden....most attractive. It is better than the online photos.
We could walk for our daily baguette each morning....almost next door. The location of this gite is perfect for walking and biking. Short walk to the river. Convenient location for travel to the Coast and other places. Set up nicely for families with or without children.
All in all, I would highly recommend this home. You would not be disappointed.

Just a 10 minute walk is the Chateau de Crazannes, built during the 14th and 15th centuries, the listed Château de Crazannes has been entirely restored and furbished.
It is known as the 'Castle of Puss in Boots' because it was owned by the real Marquis of Carabas during the 17th century !!
There is also the the Quarry of Crazannes ( les carrieres de Crazannes) which was a working quarry until the 1950's, it's beautiful white stone exported all over the world - rumor has it that it was used for the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York! An hour's tour will transport yo...
