Cragowlet has been completely renovated over a period of 6 years and the work was completed during the summer of 2014. The renovation involved repair and restoration of most of its original features. During this restoration the opportunity was taken to upgrade the kitchen and bathrooms to modern standards whilst retaining the feel of a grand Victorian property. The house contains three full sized bedrooms with one twin and two doubles one of which is en-suit. The bathroom contains a bath as well as a separate shower with a 1 meter square shower tray. The lounge has 8 foot high bay windows with views over loch long. The kitchen/dinner also has views over the loch and full dining facilities for six people. Cragowlet Cottages were built mid 1850's as a tenement of four flats for Thomas Forgan and designed by Alexander (greek) Thomson. Alexander Thomson was an eminent Scottish architect and architectural theorist who was a pioneer in sustainable building. The building and surround is category 'B' listing from Historic Scotland. The flat possesses magnificent views of the confluence of Loch Long and The River Clyde and beyond to the Cowal peninsula and the isle of Arran. Cragowlet House East retains its defining architectural features with ornate plaster cornice work, 'period' fireplaces, plaster corbels, architraves, skirting and sash & case windows. More

A fantastic holiday rental with a thoughtful and caring host. We had a great stay despite almost continuous rain all week. Fabulous views across the loch and the occasional submarine cruising past! A very characterful and comfortable place to stay.

A lovely place on the shores of Loch Long with many period features and combined nicely with modern touches. The views from the kitchen and living room windows are great all day. The loch has known to house seals or even a humpback whale....we got to see a number of ships including a newly housed Naval Submarine. Brian was available at any time and gave great communication throughout our stay. The wine and essentials that was waiting on our arrival was the perfect touch to start a stay. A short drive to loch Lomond and many other places of beauty. Thanks Brian

We had the good fortune to spend 3 nights at Cragowlet House East, as a group of 4. Our one regret is that we were not able to spend more time there having already made plans to spend a week on Arran. Cragowlet has been tastefully furnished, respecting the heritage of the period property, but the kitchen and bathrooms also reflect modern expectations. The kitchen, in particular is very well equipped. We did not feel the need to use the log burner, but it will ensure a cosy night in midwinter. Brian D was the perfect host, particularly as our visit approached, ensuring a smooth access to the property and settling in. Unfortunately we did not actually meet due to our late afternoon arrival. We live in Spain, but regularly holiday in Scotland and if we were to return to the same area we would hope to return to Cragowlet.

We are so happy you had such a great time at Cragowlet. You do seem to be exactly the type of guests the house is aimed at in that you appreciate period features but expected modern facilities. You would be welcomed back anytime. Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review.

We stayed as a family of 5 over the Easter weekend. We were so lucky with the weather which was glorious and the views from the flat were fabulous. The accommodation is very well equipped and we enjoyed the log burning stove in the evenings. The flat is situated in a very quiet and peaceful location. Loch Lomond is about a 30 minute drive and we enjoyed an island cruise there and a walk round one of the islands. We also did the Loch to Loch trail from Arrochar to Tarbet and had a nice day in the Balloch Country park. Would recommend if you're looking for an away from it all kind of break.

We had a great Easter at Cragowlet House. The location was perfect with stunning views over Loch Long. The house was well appointed with everything you would need for a short break. The lounge was particularly spacious and the wood burner kept it very cosy indeed. Loch Lomond is only 30 minutes away and the Rosneath peninsula is very quiet. I would definitely recommend.

To begin with; the photos really don't do the house justice. It is very grand and yet comfortable and cozy. Also, we simply wanted for nothing - everything had been thought of. The house is also situated very well for trips north, west or into Glasgow. Edinburgh is a little further away, but certaily doable. My advice is not to hesitate, but to go ahead and book. You will not be disappointed.

Hi, we are really happy to have guests who appreciate Cragowlet. We probably should invest in professional photos - maybe we will go strait to google virtual tour :-) Hope to see you back in the future.

Stayed in Cragowlet House for the Christmas break with family. It was lovely to have a decorated tree and other decorations to welcome us. The house is well equipped and easily served the five of us that stayed, together with additional guests for Boxing Day lunch. The food provisions, homemade cake and bubbly were a very nice touch by the owners. The house was well located for Glasgow airport and for visiting the southern highlands, Loch Lomond and other gems of Argyll and Bute. Would highly recommend as a great place to stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, located in a wonderful position opposite the water. Regardless of the weather, there was always something to see or do from the house. Loved the character and history of the house, beautifully decorated with every possible need accommodated. Great for completely relaxing or being adventurous.

Danke Brian. Gerne wieder!

About the neighbourhood
Cove and the neighbouring village of Kilcreggan were mainly developed during the 1860's. They were developed as the popularity of the Clyde Steamers increased as a means of transport. Many Glasgow shipowners and merchants made their summer retreats there, and this is reflected in some very grand houses along the shore. To give an indication of the people who lived there at that time James Templeton was the owner of Knockderry Castle (one of three castles on the shore rd.). James Templeton was the owner of the largest carpet manufacturing company in the word at that time. One of his friends, Andrew Carnegie, was the richest man in the world at that time and visited him frequently at Knockderry. It was during one such visit in 1901 that he penned his famous offer to fund New Yorks libraries.
