A great and friendly place to relax.
After booking this resort, Barb (the owner) contacted us through email with a list of things that we should know about the resort, where to go on the island and where to eat. There was so much more I cant explain it all. First thing that you do is contact the cab driver Monolo by texting him on facebook and giving him your arrival time and airline and he responds within a day or so. He was supposed to pick us up when we arrived, but he got tied up. The other cabbies that were hanging out in the area knew Monolo and called him and they took us to the Resort because Monolo was tied up.with NO PROBLEM. . Once at the Resort we were met by the yard care taker Chapin (Chappie) He explained that Juan (the property manager) would meet with us later. Chappie set us up perfectly. The resort is south of San Pedro about 2.5 mile from the center of town.but don't let that scare you. You can either rent a golf cart for about I think I was quoted about $250 us for the week. We did not rent a golf cart we used the bikes that we had access to, which worked perfectly. It only takes about 40 minutes to pedal to the center of town, or if you prefer to walk the beach it takes the same time. The beach walk it great and relaxing. You dont need to worry that you might be crossing somebodies yard there is no issues. The reason it only takes the 40 minutes is that you cut out all the corners and curves you pedal while on the bikes.Just watch out for all the golf carts and the shuttle vans that are ripping round. No problems though they all seem to know what they are doing. The pictures of the outside of the Resort on the website describe it perfectly. I will attach some of the inside that I took. A couple things that we found was the coffee pot needs to be replace, just a little out dated and was not working the best. Another heads up is you will lose power if any big storms come through and if you will need to contact Juan to reset the ac. He does it by his phone, so no need for him to come to the resort. Juan is always around during the day on and off Chappie is there every morning around 6 watering the plants, grass and tending to whatever needs to be done. He is a great person to get information from. Now when it comes to shopping for food, if you go for the American brands you will pay for it. We went for the local brands and they almost as goo, but much cheaper. Just make sure you look at expiration dates. We did not stop to shop on our way to the Resort, which I wish we did. It was pretty hard to carry 4 bags of groceries on the handle bars. haha. Monolo will stop along the way if you need him took. There are also numerous places along the roads where the locals are selling fruits, vegetables and other products. We bought from several of them and all were good. Juan can set you up with his contacts to get you on any of the excursions you may want to do. One good thing is that SUYA TOURS in right across the street. We used them for a half day reef fishing trip and they were great. OH, for those that might go fishing and catch fish, any of the restaurants in the area will cook the fish for you. There are 2 restaurants within a 2 minute walk that will take care of that. we went to have out fish cooked, but we were there doing Easter and 2 restaurants down the street were closed do to the holiday,so I was the chef. My left over 2 plus pounds of fish we had left over, I took the a condo next door and gave it to a coupe of people that have retired down in Belize and they were extremely grateful. Sometimes you will get some of the locals come around from the beach area trying to sell you some of their wares. If you tell them you are all set they move on. This only happened 3 times throughout the week. Dont be afraid of walking around San Pedro. Everybody that we came in contact with was very friendly and helpful. There are numerous streets to walk up and down for stores to visit. The excursions that we took were a trip to the Mainland for a zip line cave tubing with SEAROUS. (see my review) Fishing with SUYA TOUURS (see review) I must say that I was sort of apprehensive on going here, when I am used to going to all inclusive resorts, but we had and excellent time and enjoyed the adventure of trying to go shopping for food. I would definitely recommend this resort. If you want more email me and I will try to help you out.

My husband and I stayed in this condo and it was perfect. We had our coffee on the porch each morning with a gorgeous view overlooking the pool and further out the aqua water of the ocean with the palms swaying in the breeze. Grocery store is a block away so picked up some eggs, bread and luncheon meats and unless we were on a tour fixed those meals easily in the well equipped kitchen. We then hit up Marias fruit stand for wonderful freshly made mango/ pineapple juice (added rum in the afternoons!) and pineapple and baby bananas. Sunset beach is a fairly quiet resort, a 2mile golf cart ride away from the busier San Pedro. Late afternoon we would get showered and dressed to head into San Pedro for dinner. Barbara does a wonderful job sending info on restaurants and things to do. We loved Sandy Toes, Blue Water Grill, Pineapples, Lonestar and did the Mayan Buffet on Friday night. Probably my least fav was the buffet....but I think it’s because it was pricey for the amount of food I ate.....if you have huge appetites then you are good. Rosa arranged a couple tours for us, one back on the mainland to the ruins and zoo and then a snorkeling/ BBQ tour with Suya tours ( convenient - one dock over from Sunset Beach). We had a wonderful day with Carlos from Blue Morpho Tours. A very personable and knowledgeable guide for the Mayan ruins and zoo. ( he has Mayan ancestors!) If you meet him be sure to ask him about his favorite fruit. The zoo is small but the animals are right close to you. We did the jaguar experience (additional charge) where they put you in a cage within the jags cage. So that IS close! He licked our foreheads and we fed him and petted him. Great experience. When snorkeling we stopped at 3 different spots to see colorful fish, a lobster and a stingray! Then to a beach where they grilled up some grouper which was delicious. We really had a wonderful time. The people are helpful and friendly and we never felt unsafe. It is very laid back...for instance our golf cart was waiting at the condo and we finally caught up with the guy to pay for it a couple days later! Back to the condo....the bed was comfortable, the bathroom had a nice shower and I can’t think of anything that wasn’t provided. We would definitely like to come back for another visit! Oh forgot to mention that we took the water taxi from Belize City to San Pedro. It takes about an hour and a half but we enjoyed the ride. The color of the water is just amazing. They tag your luggage and stow it for the ride over. There is a quick stop at Caye Caulker which we intend to explore next time we visit. The other option is Tropic Air which is much quicker but more expensive and I heard others say you have to pay extra if you have a lot of luggage. Hey you are on island time so I say enjoy the San Pedro Express water taxi!

Beautiful condo just steps away from the ocean!
This was my third time staying at the Sunset condos. The property is very well maintained and close to downtown San Pedro and many great restaurants. The staff is very helpful getting you bikes, kayaks, or arranging excursions. All the units are clean, modern, have nice furniture, and great air conditioners. There is so much to do on Ambergris Caye. It is very family friendly and low key.

Clean and comfortable
I found my accommodations in good condition. The condo smelled nice, not musty or moldy and it was clean. The 'concierge' was helpful and available when I needed him. I would recommend this resort.

Sunset Beach Resort was a great place to stay. We are so glad we did! The view is incredible, beach, palm trees, tiki hut on dock and the wide open Caribbean sea, right out the front wall of full glass. And the view from the pool is the same! Small and intimate with friendly people helping out or just saying hi! with big smiles, we relaxed, ate, swam, and swung in hammocks most of the time. The golf cart drive into San Pedro was so much fun for shopping the open air markets and other shops. We managed to get in a couple of days of scuba diving and a great meals on and off the beach. It was paradise. And now we can't wait to go back and do it again!

Sunset Beach "pure relaxation"
We had a most wonderful stay at Sunset Beach condos. Right on the beach looking out our large windows to the ocean. Chapin, the caretaker, was so helpful....down to diving in the water to recover my sunglasses on our last day. The grounds were immaculate and the room itself was very quiet. It was so nice having Suya tours right across the street to meet all of our tour & dive needs. Also, there were 4 great restaurants we walked to and the walk was quite pleasant. We loved being south of the central part of town because of the relaxed feel. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a true island feel.

About the neighbourhood
Ambergris Caye, “La Isla Bonita”, is a popular tourist destination. The Belize Barrier Reef, the longest in the western hemisphere, is just ~1/2 mile (1km) off shore. The water is warm and crystal clear--ideal for scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing. It's also easy to take a day trip from the resort to visit Mayan sites such as Altun Ha and Lamanai; or a trip to observe some of the 500 species of birds found in Belize and/or catch a glimpse of monkeys, manatees and crocodiles in the wild! San Pedro is a quaint little town of about 13,000 residents that has retained its charm while handling the growing number of visitors. Sunset Beach Resort is located 2.5 miles/4 km south of the town core, which means you are away from the crowds yet still within easy reach of everything. Not only will you be able to enjoy a restful day on a quiet beach, you will have a quiet night as well – no bar or restaurant noise, just swaying coconut fronds and the occasional fish jumping in the water! Town is not far away when you want to go in for some live music, shopping, restaurants, etc. But there are things close by too; here are a few things within walking distance of Sunset Beach: --Suya Tour operators (1 minute walk) --Marin’s, a small grocery store (2 minute walk) --Restaurants: Lone Star Grill & Black Orchid (4 minute walk) --Island Time Beach Bar & Grill (10 minute walk--also has outdoor bowling lanes!) --A beach yard filled with coconut sculptures! (10 minute walk)
Getting around
Most people rent golf carts when visiting Ambergris Caye (it’s not possible to rent a car). Our concierge team can arrange your golf cart rental and have it waiting for you at Sunset Beach on your arrival if you wish. Rental costs depend on the cart size and time of year but start at about US$275/week. As mentioned, there are also complimentary bikes & kayaks available at the resort. It’s about a 10 minute bike ride into town. It’s also possible to walk to town, either via the beach (40 minutes to an hour, depending on how fast you walk) or via the road (slightly longer). Taxis are also available.
