To say our stay at Helene's property was "fantastic" & "incredible" would truly be an understatement. It is hard to describe the magic of Helene's Playa Lapa, deep in the jungle but right on the beach in Carate, CR. My partner & I found this VRBO listing and salivated at the description + reviews. Everything about this property is accurate. First, Helene is one of the most fabulous people I've ever met. She & I struck up a friendship through our chats leading up to the vacation. She is a wonderful person and friend, with a heart of gold. We felt *very* welcome as an LGBT couple. We stayed for 6 nights, 7 days - which was perfect for us. The adventures she set up for us were *fantastic.* We did a kayak tour of the nearby lagoon in both the AM and PM. We did a horseback tour through the nearby jungles and beach. We did a late-night jungle hike, looking for wild frogs and the lurking animals in the jungle. Our favorite excursion was the one we had with Luis through the Corcovado National Park. We did the full 8-hour day, but the trip was leisurely, educational, and so much fun. Luis was incredible. There is a family who lives on the property, a short distance from the home, but far enough away where you still have your privacy. They are the caretakers of the property and keep the trails nice & flowers abundant. The care Beto puts into the property is truly remarkable. His wife, Yolanda, helps him & offers chef services to guests (using the home's kitchen). We splurged with 3 meals/day and it was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. It was some of the best food I'd ever had - they caught fresh fish, used groceries I brought in from Puerto Jimenez, and lots of locally-grown herbs and veggies (the platanos she grew & cooked us were out of this world) Beto and Yolanda speak mostly Spanish (as do most in the area), so download Google translate offline before you go. I took Spanish in HS 20 years ago and was fine. Everyone was SO KIND & welcoming! We had a mobile WiFi device from our car rental company, which helped us feel better about finding the place. You'll need 4WD if you want to drive all the way to the property. Or, you can get a regular car to drive to Puerto Jimenez, then get a "taxi" from PJ, with Luis - set up by Helene. I wish we had done that. Helene's WiFi worked well enough for IG & Twitter, even a few videos. Electricity was never an issue, but we were mindful. This was one of the best stays and vacations we've EVER HAD. Helene, thank you. ❤️

This property is impossible to describe and photos cannot capture the serene beauty to be experienced here. The grounds are pristinely kept and manicured. The trees, flowers and plants provide endless visual interest and are home to an amazing variety of wildlife. Daily visits from monkeys and constant sightings of scarlet macaws are among what can be expected. Day and night, the song of jungle insects, birds and frogs are buffered by the roar of the ocean surf crashing just beyond the trees. The beach is entirely your own as far as you can see in either direction. The expertly crafted home provides a comfortable and modest place to rest and refresh. This is the place to escape the world and to live in perfect seclusion for as long as necessary.

Playa LAPA is just a slice of heaven. The house is roomy and the kitchen was well equipped. The house and garden are just beautiful. We enjoyed walking the grounds each day and picking cilantro out of the grass to use in our meals. The gentle pace of life here is exactly the antidote to modern living. We thoroughly enjoyed living off grid. The soundtrack of the Pacific and the bird song were wonderful. We went bed when it got dark and woke up when it was light..just like all the animals here. Helene and Beto, her caretaker on the grounds made sure we were comfortable every day. I am truly grateful to have enjoyed Playa LAPA. Thank you Helene and Beto

It takes some effort to get there but it is absolutely worth it! Our family of four including tween and teen daughters completely unplugged for the week and slipped into the incredible natural beauty and laid back vibe of the Osa Peninsula. This house is a hidden jewel in Costa Rica where you can see almost every animal and bird and have the most beautiful stretch of beach to yourself. We marveled at the Scarlett Macaws and monkeys in the trees in our back yard. Helene is super communicative, thoughtful and pro-active arranging for all of the tours that we wanted to take making our stay simple. We swam in the pacific, kayaked in the lagoon, hiked in the preserve, read in the hammocks and everywhere we went we saw so many animals and birds. This is certainly off the beaten path and one of the best weeks we have enjoyed together as a family.

Playa Lapa is a real gem at Carate Beach near Corcovado National Park. A very well equipped wooden cabin, situated in a large and beautiful garden with direct access to Carate Beach and kayaks for use in the nearby lagoon. Helene was an great host / owner, very helpful and responsive, both before and during our visit. And on site, Beto and Yolanda always went the extra mile, preparing some amazing meals for us and showing us the best of Corcovado, including opening coconuts, fishing in the kayaks etc. We hope to get back sometime soon!

This property is truly unique and well worth the trip out to Carate dispite the dirt road and crossing a river. At the owners suggestion we used a taxi service called Louis Taxi and Tours (506-8303-1900). Louis also gave us a guided tour of the park. He was kind and professional. Although expensive and despite that someone with a 4 - wheel drive should be able to drive it, it was nice not to have tackle the road ourselves.

Not to sound dramatic, but this was a true life experience. A bucket list trip to paradise that FAR AND AWAY exceeded my expectations!! There is nothing on earth that I have experienced that compares to the Osa Peninsula and Playa Lapa was the perfect spot to experience the jungle of the peninsula just down the beach from the Corcovado national park. Waking to the Scarlet Macaws every morning. Watching the capuchin and squirrel monkeys frolicking in the trees from the hammock and watching them coming to the feeder for a banana treat was awesome. Nesting sea turtles making their way up the beach. Hatchlings making their way back to the ocean. I was simply in awe. As I said, my time at Playa Lapa exceeded my expectations and Helene helped to make it a great experience with helpful suggestions and was always available for my questions.

We enjoyed our stay at Playa Lapa so much, the kitchen was very workable with everything you might need, the bedrooms were beautiful and the patios and the house itself is perfectly suited for its environment. Kayaking on the lagoon was amazing, the beach was steps away, macaws and monkeys are in the yard constantly. You can relax and all the wildlife comes to you. A perfect property in the most special place. I will be returning!

We enjoyed our 1 week stay at Helene's house (Playa Lapa). The beach was beautiful and the property was very nicely maintained and beautifully landscaped. Being there was very relaxing. We appreciated Helene's attention to detail, including little things like hanging plants around the house on the outside. Surprisingly, we did not have an issue with bugs and didn't even need to use bug spray. It was a bit warm at times but the open layout of the house allowed cool breezes to come in, and it cools down in the evenings after the sun sets. Overall this is a lovely place to stay.

I absolutely love this property. It is remote, and adequate preparation is required to stay here. But the payoff is enormous. The property is just 100 meters from the beach, and the property is absolutely stunning. Wildlife is regularly seen from the porches, and the hammocks are just the most comfortable place in the world. I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to experience Costa Rica's true beauty on the Osa Peninsula.
