Villa
Villa Eggedal is one of the largest and most luxurious estates around Lake Atitlan. Spectacular is the only word to describe this ten acre walled villa located near the shore in the village of Santa Cruz la Laguna. This Mayan village is only accessible by boat, just a ten-minute ride from Panajachel and you’ll arrive to privacy, luxury, spacious comfort, incredible views of the lake, mountains and volcanoes, and immaculately tended gardens and grounds. Villa Eggedal is located 150 meters from the lake shore. A winding, uphill walkway leads to the estate and then through the grounds to the two studio apartments, two houses, and the owners private home along with stunning pool. Villa Eggedal is owned by a European aristocrat and art collector, and all the rooms are filled with beautiful antiques, paintings, rugs, sculpture, prints, and Mayan and world textiles. Casa Wenche is the most secluded of the Eggedal rentals. This two-bedroom home offers the best views on the estate and its simple luxury and idyllic garden surrounding make it the perfect retreat. Living room, dining area and kitchen are all combined in a spacious common room leading out onto a 32 square meter terrace with one of the most stunning vistas on the lake. The fully equipped kitchen and ample dining space make this an ideal setting for a family or group getaway, and art-filled walls and tasteful decoration abound. This well-appointed house measures 118 square meters (1270 sq ft) and offers space for five in total: one bedroom with a double bed and the other with one bunk bed and one single. The ample stone-walled bathroom is located just off the common room. An outdoor terrace and barbecue area flank the entrance to the house and provide yet another opportunity to enjoy the surrounding garden and majestic views. Small verandas, garden seats, patios, balconies, and shady lawn areas are nestled throughout the estate in a maze of winding garden paths. This is a paradise for birds and bird watchers alike with over 100 species spotted on the property alone. Papayas, avocados, citrus trees and a well-tended vegetable garden with fresh lettuce and herbs are all there for the picking to add some extra flavor to your sunset barbecue. Staff provides housekeeping twice a week, and services like grocery shopping, laundry service and additional house-cleaning can be arranged for an additional charge. Two studio apartments and a 4-bedroom home are also available on the estate, and Villa Eggedal can accommodate up to a total 17 people comfortably and privately.

Garden of Eden
Villa Eggedal is an enchantingly beautiful place. It is inspired both in terms of its layout and the way in which it is carefully and diligently tended. This is a place to stay if you are looking for peace and tranquility and a haven in which to momentarily forget the worries of the world. Artists, writers, nature lovers such as bird watchers...you will be in your element. Don't bother coming here if you are a party reveller...you are definitely in the wrong space !

Unbelievable views, incredible service, elegant amenities"
This is an amazing rental. We were treated incredibly well throughout the entire booking and rental process. The rental has great character with lots of pleasing artwork and colonial interior details. I can think of no place I'd rather eat breakfast, read a book, or watch an afternoon thunderstorm than from its porch overlooking the exquisite botanical gardens. What a find.

Beautiful, secure and secluded.
The property is as beautiful as it is described. The caretaker and the women who do the cleaning are helpful and thorough. The water for showering is truly hot (something that is not always reliable in Guatemala). The kitchen is functional and fully-equipped; we were even able to bake in the oven. Access to a washer and dryer was a pleasant bonus. The veranda nearly doubles the square footage of the apartment and is a delightful place to spend time.

Relaxing Retreat
Very nice place! The grounds of the villa are beautiful. If you're a plant lover, this is it. The Stone paths , with stone benches and covered reflection sreas, are so well done, they reach an artistic level. To enjoy this wonderful place you must be in resonably good shape, as there are 100+ steps up from the gate to the house. Each step is very rewarding. The beds while all new are a little "orthopedic". Thee manager and caretaker couldn't have been more gracious.

Breathtaking views, excellent service, couldn't ask for better
For four weeks during February and March, 5 friends and I stayed in one of the houses on this property. We had a delightful 4 bedroom home (two rooms with double beds and two rooms with queen beds) that had two bathrooms. The house was exquisitely decorated and in pristine condition. The property managers (also owners of a local restaurant and hotel) were extremely warm and welcoming. We often ate at their restaurant, La Iguana Perdida, and I highly recommend as well for dinner or lunch. The housekeepers and groundskeeper were second to none. Ramos, the groundskeeper, lives on site and was readily available when our internet malfunctioned briefly one night. He also delivered 5 gallon jugs of clean water to our door when asked for a minimal fee. The lovely ladies cleaned our house twice weekly and would also do our laundry for a small fee. It was well worth the convenience. The grounds themselves are phenomenal. They are lush (even in the non-rainy season) and well-kept. Limes grew on our porch and there were a variety of other fruits spread throughout the property. And then the VIEW! THE BEST PART! We woke up every morning to unobstructed (unless by clouds) views of the volcanoes and Lake Atitlan. We were all traveling with computers and camera equipment and never had an issue with security. I will be staying here again when I return.

Magical & beautiful stay forever etched in our fond memory
We originally booked for 1 month in Casa Wenche, ended up extending to 2 months, that is how much we loved it from the moment we step foot on the property. Casa Wenche by far is the most private & best views on the property. The house is so generously decorated & well equipped kitchen as though it was built for owner himself to stay. This is, in fact an extraordinary house with well thought out details with guest maximum comfort in mind, which is so rare to find. The spectacular view is even better than the photo. Many days & nights we sat watching the biggest nature theatre unfold before us in the huge balcony. The view can vastly differ from misty fog to stunning volcanos, or firefly dancing in the bush like stars in the sky. Or sat in private outdoor seating area watching multiple humming birds hard at work, or the squirrel running cheekily in the trees. Deedle, the property manager is highly efficient, helpful, warm & personable, and definitely add to our beautiful experience at the lake. Ramos, the caretaker was equally helpful & will go to great length to make sure you are comfortable! True, there are many rewarding steps to navigate, but there are many resting area in between. We are not fit people at all & still manage the steps no problem if we do it leisurely, but you must be physically able to enjoy this property. We recommend organize private boat on arrival & departure through Deedle & ask Deedle for 2-3 men in advance at property to help with luggages to the house. One more tip: bring your condiments including cooking oil & also toilet paper. Eat at Deedles on first night, and go to Pana next day to do a leisure food shopping. It's too hard to bring both luggages & food shopping on arrival together. This is a magical stay that we would cherish in our memory forever! We feel extremely fortunate to stay in one of the best holiday house we ever encountered for such a reasonable price, and thank the owner for its attention to detail

An outstanding property - stunning views, excellent service, great value
I stayed at Casa Wenche for a week in August with my husband and 2 teenage children and it way exceeded my expectations. The house is in a wonderful location with stunning views of the lake and volcanoes. It is beautifully and tastefully furnished and the layout is really good - 2 decent size bedrooms, a lovely open plan kitchen and living area and a huge covered terrace with comfortable chairs and a dining table. There is also a lovely terrace outside in the garden to sit and relax on. The garden of Villa Eggedal is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen and the caretaker Ramos is incredibly helpful. Nothing is too much trouble for him. My husband and daughter arrived by private boat late at night and he met them at the private dock and helped with the luggage. He was constantly coming to see us to ask if we needed anything and replenishing the water. Deedle was incredibly efficient in arranging the rental and gave us excellent advice about Lake Atitlan. She arranged a wonderful cook for us - Manuela - who cooked breakfast and dinner for us every day with her friend Michaela. Manuela and Michaela couldn't have been better - buying the food we requested for us and cooking it brilliantly. Manuela made the best guacamole I have ever eaten ! We stayed at several other locations in Lake Atitlan and Santa Cruz La Laguna was definitely my favourite location. The house was about 5 minutes walk from the dock where there were a number of nice hotels to have a drink or eat in and about 5 minutes walk up into the village where there is a lovely restaurant open for lunch run by students who have learnt how to cook through an excellent charity project. The public boat leaves from the dock every 20-30 minutes giving easy access to other villages and hotels around the lake. The property was also incredible value for money - I would highly recommend it to anyone ( as long as you are happy to walk up a few steps to get to the house )

Doesn't get more Beautiful
I stayed here for a month in October as part of an extended stay working in the community of Santa Cruz. The land, its views, and everything about the property is almost unreal in its beauty. Sunrises on the porch never got old, and neither did the sunsets. The grounds took me days to explore fully, and I still don't think I saw the whole property. There are banana trees, lime trees, avocado trees, other fruits I couldn't even identify, patios, coy ponds, gazebos, hummingbirds, endless beautiful flowers...it just goes on and on. And Ramos, the caretaker of the property, is so sweet and receptive to anything you may need. It should really be a no brainer to stay here. The value for what you get is unparalleled. All I can say is, enjoy!

This home has it all
This home is truly a beautiful vacation rental and we feel very lucky to have stayed here. The magnificent grounds, rock walkways, outside seating areas, and landscaping could not have been improved upon. This place is beautiful, relaxing, and it has many varieties of trees and flowers that we had never seen before. We were allowed to roam freely in this delightful garden space and we felt very privileged. We rented both the apartments and the Wenche House, as our entire family came, including two boys 5 years old, and two girls 7 years old. They were in heaven, felt like they owned the place, and yet knew it would all come to an end so they enjoyed each minute to the maximum!! This house had much thought put into it to make it totally complete in every way--- right down to the littlest detail. It is decorated beautifully and is very comfortable. The front porch overlooking the lake and volcanoes is so glorious that all we really wanted to do is stay home and look at the view! Because we had the small children we asked the maid, Manuella, if she would make several of our dinners. The meals were Guatemalan and delicious. We highly recommend doing this. Ramos, the care taker, could not have been more gracious and helpful. He checked on us daily, making sure our littlest needs were complete. One night we all used flash lights and walked all the way along the rock way to the little village of Santa Cruz. There is a wonderful restaurant/hotel, called La Iguana that has meals each night that everyone eating has the same planned meal at 7:00 promptly. This meal is set family style, so our grand children were sitting there with people from all around the world...it was outstanding and quite a learning experience... As you can tell, we had a wonderful vacation at this vacation rental and do recommend it highly.

Beautiful property with magnificent views
We were told that this house was not for the handicapped or elderly because of the location up the hillside. On arrival, the task of getting suitcases up to the room, seemed daunting, but then Ramos appeared! This wonderful man carried my overladen bag all the way up and when we worried about getting food for the morning, he offered to go shopping for us. Ramos also suggested that his daughter, who had learned English and was also a chef, could come to our house and fix dinner. We had a delicious dinner the next night which Claudia purchased, cooked and served with the help of Minga. We sat on the veranda looking out at the volcanoes across the Lake while enjoying a delicious meal; extraordinary! Most impressive is that Claudia is only 17 years old! We enjoyed other meals and conversations when we visited La Iguana Perdida. David and Davinia are truly warm and social and have created a very relaxed environment where vacationers are welcomed to gather and share experiences. We all would have liked to stay on a while!

About the neighbourhood
Lake Atitlan is one of the most beautiful places on earth and Santa Cruz is on the northern shore of the lake. One looks across the lake to the three volcanoes that are to the south and it is unbelievably stunning. Santa Cruz is only accessible by boat and there tuk tuks up to the village. One has to walk a fair amount in Santa Cruz to the local restaurants but the paths are safe and stunning.
Getting around
It is easy to jump onto a boat and go and discover the other villages around the lakeshore.

How to get there
I can easily arrange ground transportation at very reasonable prices from anywhere in Guatemala. If you are arriving at Guatemala City airport I will need the details of your flight so that the driver will know to wait if your plane in delayed. The ride from the city generally takes between 2.5-3 hours to Panajachel. Once in Panajachel the shuttle will take you via some shops where you can to buy provisions. Afterwards the driver can take you to a private boat from Panajachel to Santa Cruz (generally $20) where Ramos will meet you on the dock and show you to the estate.
