A half-height wall provides privacy from the lounge area, without compromising the open plan design of ‘The Smiddy’. We provide bedding for a double bed with a choice of winter or summer duvet. Two single duvets can be provided should you prefer that. A solid oak stable style door leads off the bedroom to a second bathroom, for your convenience and extra comfort. Built by local builders and joiners, ‘The Smiddy’ features an oak laminate floor, solid oak worktops and solid oak stable style doors throughout. The black wrought iron latches, sheep-head coat hooks etc. reflect the building’s past as a working forge set within Waternish’s crofting community. A lot of love and thought have gone into creating a comfortable and beautiful ‘home from home’. Solid oak and neutral colours provide a high-end quality calm backdrop, contrasted with splashes of bright and cheerful colours. Carmen has chosen soft furnishings and accessories in her favourite sky blue colour reflecting the sky and the sea and added some bright green and yellow, bringing blue sky and sunshine into the cottage whether it is sunny outside or not.  We hope we have thought of everything you might wish for. Should there be anything else you require, please ask.  Tourist License / Licencia de turismo N °: HI-30491-F

Can we please come back sometime?
Imagine a really well-equipped holiday home and now multiply that expectation by two. The house was well thought out down to the smallest detail, from all the kitchen equipment you could possibly need, to ecological cleaning products and bathroom utensils, to Scottish DVDs, books, travel guides and even Scottish music. The house was perfectly clean and tidy! It was so quiet and peaceful here, just the retreat we were looking for in Scotland. We really have never experienced such a high standard and attention to detail. The house and the view are bombastic. One evening we were even able to photograph the Milky Way directly above the house. The stars are breathtaking here with a cloudless sky! But also Carmen's and John's warmth and extreme hospitality would be worth a review on their own! We would love to come back! Stefan and Sandra (from Germany)

Amazing Place
We cannot praise this accommodation enough. The cottage has been decorated to a very high standard with lots of lovely finishing touches. Carmen and John have invested huge care and attention to detail. The cottage is very well equipped, we loved that all of the cleaning products were eco-friendly and that many of the decorative pieces were locally sourced - the sheep skins, local ceramics and locally produced soaps. The utility room is perfect for drying off your walking boots and water proofs, the additional wash room off the mezzanine bedroom is helpful and the kitchen has everything that you can possibly need. A real find in a beautiful location where you can just sit and watch the views and wild life.

Perfect Skye location
We were so impressed by all aspects of The Smiddy; clean, cosy (great fire), comfortable and so well equipped. In addition there were many nice and generous touches from our fabulous hosts. And Skye is such a magical landscape, no matter the weather! If you are looking for a break in a wild and magical location, I would highly recommend.

WOW - Don't want others to know about it!!
This is a fantastic place to stay, decorated and equipped to the highest standard. The kitchen has everything ...and I mean everything ...you could hope to use. The decor is fabulous and the location is very special. Carmen and John are generous with what they provide in the property and with their time if you have questions. They are truly exceptional hosts for an exceptional place. They also respect your privacy - and their property cannot be seen when in the Smiddy or on the patio. The views are stunning and although in the far north of the island it is still easy to get around and see the beauty of Skye. We are already planning to go back will make sure to book early to avoid disappointment. If you visit please don't tell everyone. :-) It is a fabulous place. 5 stars are not enough. It stands out from many other places I have visited.

Simply...our best ever self-catering accommodation experience!
'The Smiddy' is in a class of its own for location and high end quality, and offers both a perfect base for exploring Skye and Rassay and a cosy and tranquil retreat. The oak furnishings and contemporary decoration is visually stunning with lots of lovely touches which Carmen has personally chosen to compliment and create a truly homely 'Skye themed' feel from the moment you step in. The kitchen is excellent and we really enjoyed cooking in during our stay - the selection of crockery, utensils and kitchen gadgets and appliances are second to none, every drawer and cupboard contained all we could need and more. We have come home wanting to tidy our own kitchen cupboards and take a trip to Lakeland! The showers are excellent with good pressure and the rain shower head is particularly refreshing. We loved the choice of high quality soaps, body washes and bath oils which have been carefully selected, including for their environmental care. (Available in the Health Shop in Portree or online) We delighted in chilling out and listening to the soundtrack of folk inspired music including Eddi Reader, which along with the books and 'small library' of maps and walking information made for relaxing evenings planning for the next day. The information folder is the most comprehensive we have ever seen, even down to a hard copy weather forecast for our entire stay. The outdoor area allows for commanding views and amazing sunsets. It was dry but windy during our stay and so a little cold to sit out too long. Being open aspect and without a wall or fence to break the wind we tried unsuccessfully to erect our beach windbreaker - but it was a laugh trying! We abandoned the planned bucket BBQ and utilised the excellent cooker instead. The bed is very comfortable and the hot water bottles and locally woven rugs were great but more of a comfort than necessity as the heating system and gas log fire are both excellent. We completed 7 walks in six days and the utility room is great for both storing boots and gear as well as utilising the washing machine and tumble dryer to keep our clothes laundered for our extended trip. Top tips: It gets light early so enjoy the mornings and get up and out to arrive before the crowds descend on the 'honey pot' sites i.e. Fairy Pools and Old Man of Storr. On the door step the Waternish Point walk excellent, as is the loop near Geary, also take a day trip to Rassay, amazing circular walk with views back to Syke, Sykeskins and the amazing YURTea&Coffee and after your Storr walk head for the Skyebluegallery at Staffin. Carmen and John are excellent hosts and clearly take great pride in presenting and providing in 'The Smiddy' the highest level of excellence in self-catering accommodation. We found it not only to be a place of peace and tranquillity, but as Christians one of true spiritual connection which was simply awesome -this is the place to come to recharge! Thank you both so much for what we consider our best ever self-catering experience - we hope to be back...fully realising that exemplary ratings here will mean we will have to book even earlier next time to get a booking! Fabulous Place
The Smiddy is the best place we have stayed at. Cosy, spotlessly clean, and everything you would need and more. Could not find one thing wrong. Has great views across Dunvegan Bay. Would not hesitate in recommending this property.

Tranquil cottage filled with light and colour
This is a beautiful place for a peaceful holiday. We stayed for five days in August and I have never been in a better holiday cottage. It is breathtakingly nice. The views over the outer Hebrides are great but the Smiddy is still a lovely place to be on rainy, grey days. It's light and airy, and Carmen has filled it with splashes of colour. The tableware and kitchen equipment are excellent, as are the bed linen and towels, and lots of treats were left for us to try. The entire place is impeccably clean. It is a joy to stay there, and Carmen and John are wonderful, friendly hosts. I cannot recommend the Smiddy more highly.

About the neighbourhood
'The Smiddy' is situated on the Waternish peninsula, one of the most beautiful and peaceful areas on the Isle of Skye. Waternish is a working crofting community with a long history of occupation dating back to Neolithic times. Explore the remains of three Iron Age Brochs or the beautiful Trumpan Churchyard, the scene of the Battle of the Spoiled Dyke in 1578. Crofting past and present, is evident everywhere in old markings and lazy beds and the remains of old stone cottages. Waternish is also an area of outstanding scenic beauty with stunning views across Loch Dunvegan to Dunvegan Head and MacLeod's Tables and across the Minch to the Outer Hebrides. Waternish sunsets are legendary. Waternish also features three Dark Skye Discovery Sites
Getting around
Skye offers a network of public transport buses. There is a bus from Portree to Dunvegan that stops near Fairy Bridge at the Waternish junction. Unfortunately there is no public transport onto the peninsula and to 'The Smiddy'. We strongly recommend that you travel by car to make the most of your holiday on Skye. Many of the most beautiful spots and popular visitor attractions are not, or not easily, reached by public transport. The nearest train station is in Kyle of Lochalsh. The nearest airport is in Inverness.

How to get there
How to find us – From Skye Bridge to The Smiddy After crossing the Skye Bridge, follow the A87 to Portree / Broadford. There is a Co Op supermarket with petrol station and cash machine in Broadford (open every day, 7am - 10pm) From Broadford follow the A87 to Portree. When you get to Sligachan, you can chose between two options: You can follow the A87 to Portree or turn left, following the A863 to Dunvegan. The A87 to Portree is the main road, which allows faster travelling and gives you the opportunity to do some shopping or fill up with petrol in Portree. The A863 to Dunvegan is the scenic route, with beautiful views of the Cuillin Hills and the coast, but it is a smaller and in parts winding road, which means slower travelling. If you arrive late and need to do some shopping or fill up with petrol, you might miss the chance to do this in Dunvegan. The grocery store in Dunvegan closes at 8pm in the summer, and I would not recommend the petrol station. Option 1 – From Sligachan to Waternish via Portree Follow the A87 to Portree. There are two petrol stations in Portree and a Co Op supermarket on the Dunvegan road with cash machine (open Monday – Saturday 8am – 10pm, Sunday 9am – 6pm). In Portree follow the A87 to Uig / Dunvegan. After 3 miles leave the A87 to Uig and turn left onto the A850 to Dunvegan. Follow the A850 for about 14 miles past Edinbane and Greshornish, until you get to the Waternish junction. Look out for a large sign advertising businesses on Waternish and a smaller road sign for B886 Waternish (Geary). Turn right here onto the B886, past a bus shelter and the beautiful old Fairy Bridge. Option 2 – From Sligachan to Waternish via Dunvegan Turn left at Sligachan Hotel, leaving the A87 to Portree, following the A863 to Dunvegan. Enjoy the beautiful scenery, as you are driving around the foot of the Cuillin Hills.  Drive past the B8009 junction for Carbost, Portnalong and Glenbrittle. This is where you would leave the A863 to go to Talisker Distillery and the Fairy Pools. Stay on the A863 to Dunvegan, enjoying beautiful views of the sea to your left, the Cuillins in your rear mirror and MacLeod’s Tables ahead of you  Just before you get to Struan, you will drive past the A885 junction to Portree. From here you would follow a scenic route via a single track road over the hill into Portree, very beautiful on another day, but quite a detour if you want to get to Dunvegan and Waternish!! After driving through Struan, follow the coastal road for another 7 miles. Just before you get to Dunvegan, turn right following a sign for Portree. Follow this nameless single track road, bypassing Dunvegan, until you get to the A850 from Dunvegan to Portree. Turn right here and follow the A850 to Portree, until you get to the Waternish junction with a large sign advertising businesses on Waternish on your left and the road sign for B886 Waternish (Geary) on your right. Turn left here onto the B886, past a bus shelter and the beautiful old Fairy Bridge. Instead of bypassing Dunvegan on the nameless single track road, you could also stay on the A863 to Dunvegan. There is a small but very well-stocked grocery store in Dunvegan, Fasgadh Stores (open from 9am to 7pm) and a petrol station (not recommended). Driving through Dunvegan past Fasgadh Stores, you will soon get to a junction. You would turn left here to get to Dunvegan Castle and the Coral Beaches. To get to Waternish, turn right here, following the A850 to Portree. After about 4 miles on the A850 you will get to the Waternish junction with the large sign advertising businesses on Waternish on your left and the road sign for B886 Waternish (Geary) on your right. Turn left here onto the B886, past a bus shelter and the beautiful old Fairy Bridge. From the Waternish junction to The Smiddy The B886 is a single track road. Don’t worry. There are plenty of passing places, if you meet oncoming vehicles – or if you like to drive slowly to enjoy the views and have a vehicle behind you. The locals will be grateful, if you pull in to let them drive past.  Follow the B886 for about 4 miles, until you get to a T-junction with road signs for Stein (left), Hallin, Trumpan and Geary (right). Turn right here. Drive past Waternish Farm (on your left) and Skyeskyns (on your right). Enjoy the fantastic sea views, as you are following a beautiful stone wall, over a hill and round a corner past a viewpoint with a memorial stone, until you get to the sign Hallin. From here you can see our house and The Smiddy. Ours is the last property on the left hand side of the road, before the brow of the hill. Drive past the track on the left, leading to some properties below the road with a sign 3c Achnahanat and a lay-by with a purple sign Tir nan Og. Turn left into the drive with a slate sign saying ‘4 Hallin Park’ on the stone wall. We live in the main house on the left. The ‘Smiddy’ is the outbuilding behind the main house overlooking the Loch. Welcome to The Smiddy!
