The Captain's House is a two-bedroom, self-catering flat occupying the first and second floors of the traditional Captains House in the centre of the historic fishing village of Stein, a conservation area on the shores of Loch Bay situated on the west coast of the Waternish peninsula of North Western Skye. The flat is traditionally furnished throughout and has electric storage heaters and a real fire (coal & logs), fire alarm cover, and a pay-phone. It sits above our craftshop and gallery. Captains House
Location was perfect, views across Lochbay from all the front windows was superb. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the best so didn't get a sunset. The apartment was clean and tidy and was equipped with everything we needed and was a lot bigger than we first thought. There was a telly and dvd player but we was out most of the time so never used them. And when we were there the views from the windows beat anything on TV. Theres pub and a restaurant with in meters of the property as well as a pop up cafe nearby that sells proper coffee and one of the best chocolate brownies. Communication with Path & Cathy before during and after was excellent. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be back again.

Lovely and Tranquil
The Captain’s House and Stein was healing for the soul. We stayed for a week. On arrival, the fireplace was ready and only needed a match. There was an abundance of coal and wood by the fireplace and a full coal house outside. We tend to go to the north of Scotland 3 times per year and this is my favourite place by far. It’s like stepping back in time but very comfortable with beautiful views over the loch from every window, including the bath. The house is fully stocked with just about every you need eg toilet rolls, cleaning products etc. There are two gardens, we were lucky to have clear night the night after arrival and had a stunning view of the Milky Way which I’ve not seen since our visits to Kruger Park, South Africa. We were unlucky and missed the Aurora by 1 day! I so wish I had arranged an additional night! The front garden is so tranquil. I’m a reader so just about every aspect of the house and garden was conducive to peaceful reading. I must apologise though, my daughter rearranged your bookcase! Also an avid reader and completely OCD! The Inn next door is stunning, we had a lovely night there and they are very child friendly. The owner went out of her way to make allowances for my daughter who has celiac. She also has Down syndrome and autism so her behaviour can be challenging so we were a little on edge that we were disturbing the other patrons but she put us at ease and assured us that it’s a family venue first and foremost. The Stien Inn gets a massive 5 stars from us! We’ve been to Skye a number of times but we’re so lucky on this occasion to see a basking shark right off the cliffs where the dinosaurs footprints are! Needless to say, we will be back.

Traumhaft!
Vielen Dank!

What a find!
Stunning location with outstanding views over Loch Bay. We were lucky enough to have great weather and particularly enjoyed sitting in the front garden enjoying the sunsets over the Outer Hebrides. Stein Inn is just next door - with great beers and food. We were Sea Kayaking and couldn't have wished for a better place to explore the coast and small islands from. The house itself was very comfortable - loved the bath with the view! Will almost certainly return as soon as time permits!

One of Skye's finest!
We recently returned from our third visit to Cathy and Pat's lovely house in Stein. This has become our favourite place to stay in Skye - a house with a wonderful location and all the character you hope to find in an island home. It's also a place with its own fascinating history involving a Finnish/Russian Captain who married a local girl. The house has a lovely lived-in feel with the open fire in the sitting room to gather round in the evenings, and the wonderful bathroom with a view in the upper floor where you can lie in your bath and enjoy the view across the bay. Lots of walking and history in the Waternish peninsula and elsewhere in the north of Skye without having to travel too far, and of course the wonderful Stein Inn is your next door neighbour. What more could you want from a holiday home?

Best Place to get away from it all
We have been holidaying in Skye for 10 years and have stayed in several holiday lets on the island. This place is easily the best location to see the North of the Isle, it is very Scottish in character, next door to Loch Bay and the Stein Inn. The restaurant at the end of the terrace is top class but has to be booked before you travel. We love it so much we have stayed there for the last 6 years and will be back again this year. Cathy and Pat are lovely and the accommodation is always clean. The coal/ wood fireplace is great on cooler nights. The flat now has internet so you can connect if you must. Take a trip on the local boat, they will take you anywhere you want to go and a sunset trip must not be missed. If you like the wildlife, I have seen golden and sea eagles, dolphins, eider duck, turns, lots of other seabirds in the bay. I also had a close encounter with a pine martin on the other side of the loch. So, if you want to get away from city life but like to be next to the pub, this is the place. But don't bother in our weeks, we have already booked!

Spacious apartment in excellent location.
The apartment has wonderful views over Loch Bay. It has the excellent Stein Inn and Loch Bay restaurant just yards away. The apartment is clean and tidy with a cosy feel. It has an open fire and a very good range of facilities. Cathy and Pat will always provide a warm welcome. We have been coming to the Captain's house for twelve years and always look forward to our two week break in the spring. Nick and Mo.

Wonderful and full of charm and character
Stein is a wonderful place, tranquil and friendly, a timeless haven off the beaten track. This was our second holiday at The Captain's House, once again we loved it ! A fortnight of peace and quiet....... The apartment is large therefore feels like a house, it is spacious with wonderful views across the loch and to the outer Hebrides, the bathroom views while having a soak are particularly therapeutic! It is full of character and charm, has an open fire, which was all ready to light on our arrival and, as our previous visit, there was a lovely Christmas tree to welcome us. There is everything you need for a long stay, the kitchen is particularly well equipped and spacious, I even did a bit of baking - cooking looking out onto the loch. It is next door to the excellent Stein Inn, the oldest on Skye., so does not feel isolated and there are other craft businesses in walking distance, there is a true sends of community. If you want state of the art, super slick contemporary, this is not for you. But if you want somewhere welcoming and friendly, retaining a little history, charm and warmth, go for it. We will definitely return

Perfect house with great views
The location is excellent - As usual the house on arrival is always clean and tidy. The top floor bathroom must have one of the finest bathroom views on the whole of Skye ! The owners Cathy and Pat are only too pleased to help with any information you may require. Would I recommend the house to a friend, well Yes and No - why No because I do not want anybody else to know about this gem.

Map
About the neighbourhood
Waternish is still very much a peaceful traditional crofting area, little affected by the passage of time and one of the most unchanged parts of Skye. Magnificent views west to Dunvegan Head, and out over the Minch to the Outer Hebrides, can be enjoyed from much of the peninsula, together with views east across Loch Snizort to Trotternish. Activity: There are plenty of fine walks, long and short in Waternish alone. The area is rich in wildlife and flowers, with eagles, otters and an abundance of orchids. It is also a good base from which to explore North West Skye and visit the Cuillins. There is also a diving centre (Dive & Sea the Hebrides) and a jetty. Eating & Drinking: Stein is well served for visitors. It is home to the oldest pub on Skye, the Stein Inn, which offers real ale, a fine selection of whiskies and good food in the bar and dining room, all within the setting of a sensitively restored 200 year old building of great charm and character. 100m away at the other end of the village is the well known Loch Bay Sea Food Restaurant. Other establishments a little further afield include the fine cuisine of the restaurant at the Greshornish House Hotel, the warm welcome and great food at the Edinbane Lodge, or the acclaimed award-winning menu of The Three Chimneys at Colbost. Leisure: Many of Skye's craft workers are in the North West and should not be missed. In Waternish there are the SkyeSkyns tannery & shop, the Halistra Pottery, The Skye Shilasdair Shop knitwear and Brae Fasach Ceramics & Painting Studio. And, of course, Dandelion Designs craft workshop and Images Gallery on the ground floor of 'The Captain's House' itself! Nearby are Edinbane Pottery, and the Croft Studio at Dunvegan. Interest: The history and folklore of Waternish encompass a romantic and turbulent past ranging from the Clan Wars of the MacLeods and MacDonalds, through the supernatural to the tragic and intriguing tale of Lady Grange, secretly imprisoned in the Hebrides for 15 years by her Jacobite husband, she was buried at Trumpan. Local historic sites abound, including a number of ancient monuments such as Trumpan Church, scene of a bloody battle when, on a Sunday in 1578, the Clan Macleod were surprised at worship, locked in the church and burned alive within, by the MacDonalds of Uist, who were themselves massacred within hours on a nearby shore! Others include Dun Hallin and several famous Clan battle sites, as well as the village of Stein itself. Stein: The village was originally established by the British Fisheries Society in 1786 as a model fishing village along with Tobermory & Ullapool. Stein was designed by Thomas Telford but, on Skye, the brave venture failed and the buildings of Stein were left to slumber on for two centuries, forming a fascinating contrast with the grandiose scheme in Telford's master plan. As a result, the village and its buildings are little changed, most of them being listed of architectural and historic value (including The Captain's House). The village is also a Conservation Area with an idyllic setting on the shore. 'The Captain's House' has its own intriguing and romantic story ... Local legend has it that early in the 19th Century a Russian trading ship put into the loch. It's Captain fell in love with a local girl and returned later to marry her and build The Captain's House. It is known that by 1850 the house belonged to Captain Carl Lillia, a Russian Finn, who had married Margaret Nicolson, daughter of the local merchant at Stein on Waternish. They had three sons, the youngest of whom followed in his father's footsteps. Norman Lillia served his time before the mast on clippers doing the China run. He went on to captain windjammers, the last and largest of the great sailing ships, later going on to serve in the Royal Navy during World War 1. His life reads like a 'Boys Own Comic' adventure story. Their descendants still visit the house. So too, we hope, will you.
