The Barns overlook the Narrows and the Barmouth with its turbulent waters that prompted the Viking invaders to name it the ‘Strang Fjiord’. The Lough is a site of Special Scientific Interest and of Outstanding Natural Beauty. On the other side lies the Lecale area and views from the site stretch to the Mourne Mountains. The barns were built as a working farm in the early 1700’s and owned for generations by the Savage family. The ‘Savages of the Ardes’ were a large land-owning family based at Ardkeen and owning much of the southern part of the peninsula. Barr Hall was occupied by a cousin who oversaw land management in the townland. The surrounding land is now owned and managed by The National Trust. Restored from dereliction in 2000 the stone barns were sympathetically renovated to retain many features and interior stone walls. All are equipped with central heating and traditional black cast iron enclosed gas fires. All have traditional Esse cooking ranges and microwaves in fully fitted kitchens.
