The Cathair Dhubh Estate is tucked into the rugged Sutherland coastline on the NC500 between the villages of Lochinver and Clachtoll. Nestling in the heart of the spectacular Assynt countryside, it is a haven for wildlife lovers, hikers, fishermen, photographers and outdoor enthusiasts, not to mention those families looking for white, sandy beaches and crystal blue waters. At Cathair Dhubh Estate the views are simply amazing! Bring your binoculars and you could be watching whales, basking sharks, porpoises and dolphins all from your window! The cottage has two bedrooms; a double and a twin. It has a good sized family bathroom. There is a fully-fitted and well-equipped kitchen, incorporating an oven, hob and microwave, together with a fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. The open plan lounge and dining area provides a comfy place to relax and is equipped with satellite TV and DVD player and CD radio. We do have Wifi, but in the spirit of getting away from it all, it is quite basic and at times, elusive! There are patio doors leading to outside seating where you can experience the breathtaking views.More

The cottages are located in acres of rocky knoll and moorland, with footpaths to the sea. Fern Cottage, like the other cottages, is beautifully decorated and has everything you need to prepare meals. The locally made pottery adds to the pleasure of eating local produce! Those who, like us, have elderly knees and energy levels can sit and admire sea views from the sofa, dining table or bedroom and a gentle climb to a well-placed bench gives more distant views and sunset seascapes. The cottages are fenced off to keep sheep away and the fence would definitely keep children confined. There are some drops in level where the cottages are cut into the landscape, so small children need supervision but older sensible ones will enjoy doorstep adventures. Access by car is along a single-track-with-passing-places road, a very scenic drive from Lochinver, passing the turn for Achmelvich beach and a magnificent carpark viewpoint. The road continues on from Cathair Dhubh to nearby Clachtoll Beach and beyond to rejoin the main A894 near Kylesku.
Simply exploring this route and the neven narrower road South from Lochinver filled our days. We drove quite short distances but experienced so much magnificent scenery and some lovely beaches, taking many photographs. The Lochinve Larder Pies are so good we did not try as many local eateries as we intended. Flossie’s (Amazing) Beach Store was a regular coffee stop. There are places we meant to visit but didn’t - we were spoilt for choice! We had good Scottish weather, with more sun than cloud or rain and had enough wind to deter the midgies on most occasions. We still needed the anti-midge spray: we use Incognito but Smidge, developed for the Scottish varieties, has been recommended.
We had booked on the basis of the excellent website and got a copy of the cottage 'guide' in return for our deposit, confirming we had made a good choice of place and that the business was well-managed, something that was obvious throughout our stay. Thoughtful touches like appropriate washing machine and dishwasher tablets and a welcome pack of the right grind of coffee were a bonus and a testimony to Kate’s practical kindness to guests!

What an amazing place! The houses are well designed, cosy, fully equipped for every eventuality and spacious too. I adored watching the sun rise over the hill with a cup of tea in my very comfortable bed, and the sun setting with a beer on the bench outside. The ever changing views are beyond stunning, especially at sunset. The peace is heavenly. It’s a perfect wee spot, away from the town but close enough to pop in for any essentials. There are stunning beaches just a stroll away and so many adventures to be had in the surrounding area. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys high quality accommodation and priceless views.

Definitely one of the best holiday places we’ve rented - Orchid cottage was super clean and cosy, complete with comfortable beds, modern appliances .... walks from the door and fabulous views; constantly, beautiful changing views. All the cottages face the sea and offer wildlife watching opportunities. We love the Assynt area and enjoyed daily walks (the coast is stunning), a scenic drive to Smoo Cave, and an ascent of the infamous Suilven. Thank you so much to Kate and Gary for your warm hospitality. The gift of wine and local, delicious treats was much welcomed after a long, scenic drive!

This area of Scotland is absolute paradise. We visit each year with two young boys Cathair Dhubh cottages (orchid cottage) is by far the nicest cottage we have ever stayed in. We have already booked again for a special occasion next year! Spectacular views right on the back door step, spotlessly clean, comfy beds, plenty of space, they are very well equipped cottages. We couldn't fault the place at all. Unbelievable sea views from the door step. The owners are lovely, very responsive to messages and happy to help. If you love getting away from it all then this is the place for you, it's an ideal base for sightseeing across Assynt. There are amazing white sandy beaches, beautiful vistas and plenty of good walks, picnic spots. Great sitting on the wooden bench outside cottage looking out to sea with a glass of wine after a day out, total bliss! Highly recommended to anyone!
