Cottage
CasparCottage is a very charming, private, quiet cottage that my husband and I built on our five private acres at the eastern edge of the Russian Gulch State Park, with a lovely walk through the redwood forest to the WATERFALL in the park. We are located just three miles up the ridge from the ocean and ten minutes from Mendocino or Fort Bragg. It's a perfect place for a honeymoon, anniversary, special occasion or quiet retreat. It has a comfortable queen bed with down comforter and nice linens, new sleeper sofa (that accommodates one adult or two small children), fully equipped kitchen, gas BBQ and picnic table with string lights above for the evenings, lovely custom cabinetry and a beautiful marble tiled bathroom with a jet tub and large shower. The cottage is very comfortable and nicely... The cottage is very comfortable and nicely appointed with original art. Flames from an enameled European propane stove bring the warmth and coziness of a fire with the convenience of a thermostat. There is a Bose radio, 32' flat screen DIRECTV w/ HBO, DVD/VCR with small library of films, Satellite wireless INTERNET connection, iron and hairdryer. For our guests we provide organic coffee and tea, nice bread and jam and fresh fruit and flowers (usually from our garden). From the cottage you can walk through the Redwoods to a beautiful WATERFALL, as we are near the Russian Gulch State Park Waterfall Trail and also bicycle trails in Jackson State Forest. We will gladly direct you to great restaurants, nice beaches, beautiful hikes and activities on the coast. Mendocino is full of wonderful activities from hiking and biking and kayaking in our many State Parks to wine tasting and fine dining. There are beautiful deserted beaches for beach combing and horseback riding and art galleries and unique shops for browsing. There is a Mendocino Music Festival held in a huge tent overlooking the ocean for two weeks in July and the Mendocino Film Festival in early June, as well as Whale Festivals in March, a Mushroom Festival in November and a Crab and Wine Festival in January. The TOTAL cost is $150 nightly on weekdays December through February, $165 on weekends. In March, April and November it is $165 nightly. In May, June and September $175, and in July and August and on all holidays $185 nightly. Weekly rates $800 - $1150. OUR PRICES INCLUDE TAX AND CLEANING! Interaction with guestsThe cottage is open and ready for guests when they arrive and after they get settled in I usually go over and greet them and let them know that we're available to them if they have any questions. Guests are welcome to visit our garden and my husband's woodworking shop and my art studio. Many quests come year after year and we've become friends with quite e few. We enjoy sharing our little oasis with our guests.

Serene Coastal Cabin
We spent a wonderful week at Caspar Cottage. Minutes from Mendicino and the glass beaches at Fort Bragg. Plenty to see and Do. The coastal views are spectacular. lots of restaurants nearby and there is a grocery store and many other services in Fort Bragg. The Cottage was spotless, well furnished and cozy. Would definitely go back.

Gorgeous Getaway
First, the location is perfection: adjacent to Russian Gulch State Park, within easy walking distance of the park’s famous waterfall, about halfway between Mendocino and Fort Bragg (with all their opportunities for dining, shopping, and gallery visits), and close to a number of other state parks and natural areas featuring everything from coastal access for beach combing to redwood groves for hiking and more. The cottage itself is charming, comfortable, and elegant. Lovingly built by the owners, it is spacious and airy, and clearly designed with the guests’ every need in mind. Its loft ceilings and numerous windows make it feel more spacious and airy than other cottages of similar size we’ve stayed in. Surrounded by rhododendrons, flowers, and trees, it is screened away from the main house for privacy, but with with easy access to the hosts in case of need (not that any arose while we were there). The hosts, Diane and Bob, offer as much or as little interaction as guests wish, although we encourage guests to get to know them, as they are warm and charming people with intimate knowledge of the area and all it has to offer. We couldn’t ask for a better place to spend a relaxing, refreshing week, and look forward to returning.

We really loved Caspar cottage! So peaceful and rejuvenating! The cottage is clean and comfortable. It also has a very nice patio with two chairs, table with a bench and BBQ grill. Diane and Bob are very nice host. I will definitely come back! Thank you Diane and Bob.

The perfect, tranquil and lovely haven for your Mendocino adventure
My husband and I recently spent a week at the Caspar Cottage. It is situated in a very quiet, peaceful setting and the hosts, Bob and Diane, are simply delightful. They welcomed us and availed themselves to us for any information we might require for our visit. Upon arrival we were greeted with a gorgeous fresh bouquet of colorful flowers, a lovely loaf of seeded bread, raspberry jam, fresh butter, a half pound of gourmet coffee, and a large bowl of fresh fruit. Bob and Diane are both gifted artisans. The house is meticulously clean and evidence of Bob's building skills is everywhere. It is decorated in a most comfortable and artistic manner thanks to Diane. It provides you everything you could possibly need for you stay. There is an amazing hike within walking distance of the cottage that winds through a massive redwood forest ending at a waterfall. Fort Bragg and Mendocino are both nearby and provide galleries, restaurants, shops and proximity to the ocean. The Mendocino Botanical Gardens are worth the trip. 47 acres of wondrous natural beauty with a path that winds down to view the huge cliffs and ocean. We recommend the Caspar Cottage with the highest regard. You will not be disappointed! Tom and Mary

Perfect Quiet Retreat With Local Trail Access And All The Amenities!
I stayed at this cottage with my mother for a Mother's Day-My Birthday retreat. This place is fantastic. We had the perfect hosts and the cabin is well stocked with dishes, pans, silverware, robes, plenty of towels, soap, etc and even fresh flowers from the garden! Perfect place for a writer's retreat, best friends getaway, mother daughter weekend, or a romantic couple's retreat! Private but conveniently located close to the homeowners house who are very helpful and give plenty of guidance about the area and trails! The Russian gulch waterfall trail is an easy 3 mile round trip from the cottage that I highly recommend! Even just walking along the quiet country road was lovely with all the wild flowers in bloom! By car it's only a few minutes from Mendocino but you feel like you're in the middle of the woods. I would definitely go back and highly recommend Caspar Cottage to anyone looking for a nice getaway at a very reasonable price! Wish we could have stayed longer :) -Shannon R

Everything Perfect- Choose Caspar Cottage ! You will love it...
My wife & I stayed at the Caspar Cottage for 8 days in late May, and couldn't be happier with the choice. Having stayed at different rentals over the years, sometimes what a picture shows, or is described...is different when you get there. CASPAR COTTAGE WE MUST SAY WAS BETTER, BEYOND OUR EXPECTATIONS. Diane was teriffic in getting back to us, working out details of the rental. Since the cottage is on their property, they are right there if any thing is needed. The cottage was very clean, well thought out in design. It is nicely situated in the woods, quiet...peaceful..and easy access to the ocean or a walk in Redwoods. Such a beautiful area, Mendocino...as we rounded the corner to the first view of the shore line, after driving through the Redwood Forest, we both commented how we wanted to retire here. Being from the East Coast, the shore is much different than back home, but it is more beautiful, and so far away :( Looking forward to returning some day.

A Vist to the Festival of Lights
I should have written this sooner. Our plan was to attend the lovely Festival of Lights at the Botanical Garden. Our weekend getaway started off with a big rain. Diane was good enough to remind us to check to see if 128 was flooded and suggest we take the alternative route. The primary route was flooded that day, so it was good we checked first. Thanks for the suggestion. When we arrived, we were greeted by Diane and showed us around the lovely cottage and give all the details we needed to be comfortable. It has been a chilly day so she had turned on the heat to ensure we were warm from the moment we walked. The little kitchen was well stocked with breakfast goodies, good bread, juice, milk, fresh coffee. We brought in a few groceries so we had enjoyed breakfast at the cottage and a dinner and ate out for the duration of our stay. The cozy cottage was nicely furnished, the bed very comfortable, located off the beaten path that provided beauty, tranquility and respite from busy day to day life. We definitely visit again. Thanks Diane.

Perfect!
Caspar Cottage was a lucky find. It is a smartly designed, beautifully built hideaway in the woods but just a few minutes from the charming town of Mendocino. Woodwork and tile is handsome. Sofas, couches and bed are good quality and quite comfortable. Bonus for us city dwellers: ultra-quiet nights and bright stars in the dark night sky. Diane is the perfect hostess. She is pleasant, knowledgeable, and there when you need her to be. She gave us many great tips on touring the surrounds. We have been vacation renters for over 20 years and Caspar Cottage was our favorite yet.

Dream Cottage In The Woods
Without a doubt, staying in this hand-crafted cottage near the town of Mendocino was the best choice I made in planning my weekend vacation. The entire time my partner and I felt so at home, secretly wishing we could stay forever. We were completely blown away by the attention to detail and craftsmanship of each part of this cozy oasis. The kitchen is built to provide you the comforts of home, which made cooking breakfast or any meal a real treat. More than anything, the warmth and care provided by the owners surpassed all expectations. When we arrived we were greeted by Diane with a gracious welcome and a beautiful flower arrangement as well as fresh bread and jam. Her and her husband really go out of their way to make sure you have the most enjoyable stay. I definitely plan on returning soon! Thanks again!!

It brings us a lot of joy to share our little oasis with our guests. We are glad we exceeded your expectations. The first thing I do when guests leave is to read our guest book and sometimes it actually brings a tear to my eye along with a big smile. We do care about our guests. The guests who stayed with us just prior to you went down the trail into the redwoods to the waterfall rather late in the day (without flashlights) and after it got dark I realized they hadn't returned, so we walked down into the woods and found them and brought them home. Hospitality, it's what I do! We hope to see you back here again!

About the neighbourhood
CasparCottage is located near the end of a quiet road, at the eastern edge of the Russian Gulch State Park and across the road from Jackson State Forest. From the cottage you can walk down through a Redwood canyon to the 30 foot waterfall in the park. We are just five minutes from the beach and ten minutes from the village of Mendocino or Fort Bragg. On our five private acres we built the cottage and also our home and my husband's one man woodworking shop and my art studio which are nearby, but obscured by trees and a garden. The cottage is very private. It sits in the sun and is surrounded on the north side by trees. The dark night sky provides views to the stars of the Milky Way and the full moon. You'll like it!

How to get there
Directions from San Francisco: We are about 3 hours from the Golden Gate Bridge if you take Highway 101 North to Cloverdale and go West on Highway 128 which is a beautiful, but windy road that goes over a mountain and through the hills, through Boonville, past many small picturesque wineries in the Anderson Valley, and though a Redwood forest before reaching the coast and going North on Highway 1 to Mendocino. Alternately, you could take Highway 101 North to Highway 116 West and then 12 West to the coast at Bodega Bay, and up the coast to Mendocino from there. It takes maybe an hour longer, but it is a spectacular drive, especially on a clear day. Directions from Mendocino: Going North on Highway 1, go 3 miles past Mendocino and TURN RIGHT on ROAD 409. Continue up the road for 3 miles and on the RIGHT at 41755 Road 409 you will see our sign WINEGAR. The cottage will be open and ready for you by 4PM with coffee, tea, fresh fruit and flowers, nice bread, butter and jam for the morning, and a notebook full of information about the area. Check out is 11AM. Feel free to call or email us with any questions.
