Superb house and hosts
I have lived in Northern Portugal before for 3 years. Decided I wanted to go back and so booked a room in this house as a base while I looked for somewhere permanent to rent. House is modern, very clean and with all mod cons. Eduarda and João are perfect hosts, extremely pleasant and helpful. They speak limited English and despite my living in a Portuguese area before, where few spoke English, my Portuguese is still not very good. However, their daughter Cláudia lives and works in England and speaks perfect English. Cláudia was so helpful both before and during my stay. She answers texts, emails etc almost immediately and will help and translate tirelessly. Mêda is nothing special. OK it's a small clean town but there's little there. It is however, perfectly placed to explore this beautiful and historic region. I found its location perfect. I also found the tourist office in nearby Transcoso (located in the castle itself) most helpful. There's a South African lady who works there who has lived in Portugal for 17 years. She is great fun and incredibly helpful. If Eduarda and João offer you their home made wine you are in for a treat - fantástico. All in all, 'uma experiência fantástica'.

Thank you so much for your kind words Gary! My parents were delighted to have you with them and I am very pleased to know you enjoyed your time in Mêda and my dad's wine :)
Hope you are enjoying your new place in Portugal!

Perfect get away-highly recommend it!
The hostess was very friendly and went out of her way to make us feel at home. She even let us try some of her homemade wine (which was wonderful!) and gave helpful travel advice. The scenery was stunning and convenient for traveling to sights in the surrounding area. Would highly recommend staying here!

Meda is at the eastern end of the Beiras, close to the border with Spain. This is vineyard zone where Porto wine is produced. Culture and Nature enrich this remote but stunning region in the deep interior of Portugal. There is a leisure centre nearby where you can use the swimming pool and tennis court. Another big attraction of this region is its cuisine. Food is delicious. A temptation! Walk around the village, talk with the warm locals, learn about their life style and most likely they will offer you food.
What else can you do in this region:
-Visit the historical Medieval Castle of Marialva (15 min by car) and the stunning Côa Valley Archaeological Museum and Park. Or take a boat trip on the Douro river from nearby Pocinho.
Getting around
Lisbon is 350km away - about a 4 -hour drive - while Porto is about 230km away, some 2.5 hours by car. Salamanca in Spain can be reached at about the same time while Madrid is a little under 5 hours away.
By Air
Oporto (Porto) is the closest airport, though some fly into Lisbon.
From the Airport
There are no airport transfers available, and given the lack of public transport in the area, a car is essential, especially if you wish to visit the historic fortified villages of this fascinating area.
