We stayed on the Mazu for a week and what a fantastic experience and fun that was to pretend we had our own yacht. Our kids absolutely loved the place and being on the dock in town was pure delight. Be sure to jump in the river for a swim and take a kayak out. Olga and Chip were the perfect hosts; they were very quick to respond to our messages and offered as much or as little interaction as desired. Their great local tips made our vacation even more special. You must do the river cruise with them too!  The boat was well equipped with everything you need and the location was perfect because it was walking distance to restaurants and shops, yet quiet and peaceful at night. We Can’t wait to go back next year.

I loved the idea of staying on a boat overnight, and booked this stay as a special treat for myself because I was about to have foot surgery and would be laid up for several weeks. My two stars are because the Mazu is a pretty boat and I still love the idea. But when the breeze died around 8 p.m., the heat rose and mosquitoes became intolerable (it wasn't possible to escape them, and the little fans onboard were pitifully inadequate). I texted the owners several times telling them how miserable I was, hoping they would help me somehow - maybe with a fan that worked - but never got an answer. Around 9:30 p.m. I finally left, covered with dozens of bites, after texting to them that the bed and towels were untouched. It was nice that they left a bottle of wine and some bottled water (you can't drink the tap water), crackers and cheese. But at $265, that was the most expensive snack I've ever had! The next day I finally got a text from owner Olga saying "I hope you had a safe drive home and good luck with your foot." Not one word about my awful experience and the fact that I hadn't actually gotten to spend the night on the boat. I was shocked and appalled at the lack of concern or professionalism. This was especially disappointing and puzzling because I had talked on the phone and texted several times with Olga, as well as having a friendly chat with her on a river boat cruise they offer. I would warn anyone thinking of staying on this boat during the summer to take a BIG fan and bug spray. Also, be aware that you're docked right across from a restaurant's large deck, so there's not much privacy. And both bedrooms had a slight sewage smell from the adjoining toilets.

Staying on Mazu was a delightful experience, spacious, clean and stylish accommodations with all the comforts of home, and Chip and Olga providing full concierge services when asked. Their River Tripper is an educational and fun cruise of the numerous oyster farms on the Damariscotta River, not to be missed. And Olga provides a full bar alongside the freshest and most delicious oysters. Excellent seafood restaurants abound. We look forward to our next return trip.

Wife, 7 year old and so has a great tip aboard Olga's boat. Clean, tasteful and very comfortable. Be sure to take the canoe or kayaks out and don't miss her river boat tour and oysters. One of the most unique accommodations we have had. Will definitely go back.

My husband and I spent a long weekend at this wonderful accommodation that is right on the water with 360 degree views of the river and the town. What a joy to sit outside relaxing and and watching the seals frolicking in the river. Restaurants and shops are all within an easy walking distance. The boat was immaculately clean, spacious, light and airy.

Olga's boat was so cozy and so roomy at the same time. My 3 kids and I spent 3 nights on the boat. This was the first time any of us had slept on a boat and the Mazu is like a floating cottage. We had all the space we needed. The Mazu is clean and the beds cozy. My kids are varsity level readers: give them a comfy space and they will read for hours. There were easily 10 perfect reading spots. It was hard to peel them away from their books. The boat is docked and the river is calm so the movement felt more like being on a hammock than on the open ocean. Every bed or chair felt like a sweet sleeping space. One afternoon after kayaking we all napped, books in laps in different spots. Step on the Mazu and you feel excited an relaxed at the same time. Walk every where. Great for kids that are older. Perfect location. Olga and her Boyfriend Chip were totally responsive and helpful. I left the Mazu feeling completely refreshed by the air and the motion of the ship.

About the neighbourhood
The area: The Twin Villages of Damariscotta - Newcastle conveniently located only 2 min. off of the major highway, Route 1, in Midcoast Maine. Damariscotta, the 'river of many fishes' in Abernaki, is named for the alewives that annually migrate the Damariscotta River and then 'climb' the amazing fish ladder at Damariscotta Mills in order to spawn in the Lake. The river is also one of the northernmost mating grounds of the primitive and marvelous horseshoe crab. And these waters support seals, ospreys, bald eagles, king fishers, great blue herons, mackerel and stripe bass, just to name a few. Humans have also worked this river for about 13,000 years. Their most famous legacy forms immense, white oyster shell mounds on the riverbanks. These shell heaps are testament to the oyster be...
