The circuit although only re-opened in 2011 as the Red Bull Ring, has a long history holding major events such as Formula 1, was formerly known as the A1 Ring and before that the famous Österreichring. The ski season for the majority of the ski slopes in the area runs from the beginning of December until the end of March. Some of the Local Ski Areas are Lachtal, Kreischberg, Grebenzen, Gaaler Lifte, Hohentauern, Praebichl. The Climate:The climate in Austria is widely continental with the Eastern edge of the country stretching into the Pannonian climate zone. It is typical for Central Europe with cold winters (going down to minus 20 degrees Celsius) and hot and sunny summers (going up to 35 degrees Celsius during some days in August). The coldest months are January and February, the hottest July and August. The Region:Styria is famous for its white wine. If you get a chance be sure to stop at a wine yard ('Buschenschank') near the border to Slovenia. There you'll also get great food - order a 'Brettljause', but not if you're vegetarian, or fond of small portions, because what you'll receive is a circular wooden tray stacked high with an enormous range of cold meats, and perhaps garnished with horseradish shavings (Kren). Bordering on Slovenia in the south, Styria presents an enticing, colourful blend of forests and hills, alpine peaks and picturesque towns. The region is renowned for its warm hospitality and tasty produce, notably pumpkins, apples and wine.Styria's colourful landscapes range from lofty mountains to verdant vineyards; from swathes of dense forest and sparkling turquoise lakes to pretty pumpkin fields. The north of Styria is where you'll find the highest peaks, including the 2,995 metre (9,826 feet) Mt. Dachstein, which borders on the Salzkammergut region. And this is also where you can discover Austria's newest National Park: the Gesäuse National Park with its stunning gorges. The south is characterised by more pastoral scenery. The gentle rolling hills of the vineyards, apple orchards and warm springs for bathing in make it a very pleasant place to spend some time. Throw in the wide range of walking and cycle routes and the temptations of welcoming wine taverns and you may find it hard to leave! The local areaThe Murtal region, offers an enormous range of things to do, suitable for visits whatever the time of year.Stretching along the River Mur, from the peaks of the Tauern mountain range to the wide plains of Aichfeld, the scenery is as diverse as the holiday activities on offer. The area is also steeped in history and tradition - with several ancient monasteries and historical buildings to explore. Local museums will tell you more about the area - such as the Styrian wood museum in St Rupbrecht ob Murau for example. The area is also perfectly placed as a starting point for further one-day excursions into Styria, Carinthia and the Province of Salzburg.Throughout the year the broad spectrum of outdoor activities includes golf, horse-riding, swimming in the lakes or swimming pools (some of which are open air) , summer tobogganing, skating and cart-racing, cross-country skiing, winter horse-riding, tobogganing and ice-skating.In winter, the woods and meadows become the playground for snowboarders, skiers, winter hikers and touring skiers. The Murtal Ski Pass covers the six resorts in the region. There are several good skiing areas, such as the Murauer Frauenalpe, Kreischberg or Lachtal. They are not internationally famous and therefore are in comparison relatively cheap and family-friendly. In total, there are 58 ski lifts and 150 kilometres of slopes between altitudes of 850 and 2,222 metres in the Murtal. Two thermal spas offer delights on the other end of the temperature scale: The Gesundheitstherme Wildbad was first mentioned in 1500 as a hot spring, although Celtic and Roman people were probably the first to enjoy the hot spring. Today, it is a modern spa; just like the Therme Aqualux, in Fohnsdorf, the newest spa of Styria. In summer the lush woods and meadows attract hikers, climbers, cyclists and mountain bikers. Hundreds of kilometres of cycle trails and routes lead through valleys or up to rewarding lookout points. It's especially worth visiting the historical towns of Judenburg, Murau and Oberwölz, as well as going to the many day-trip destinations dotted about the region. The nature reserve of Naturpark Grebenzen is nice for hiking and will provide an opportunityMore
