Doing the most to take full advantage of its location alongside a pristine beach where the Coral and the Tasman Seas meet at 30 degrees South Latitude, the design emphasises comfort and functionality in the climate rated by the CSIRO as the most liveable in Australia. Beautiful finishes, extensive use of Australian hardwoods, a flowing, open plan layout, lowE glazing and waveform slump glass, combined with sustainable construction techniques and materials, and the latest hydronic solar heating technology, all accent the character and comfort of this home on the east coast of Australia at 30 degrees south latitude. Use of renewable energy design principles maximise the effects and use of natural light, rainwater, active and passive solar heating, and natural sea breeze cooling all combine to make the house supremely comfortable all year round. Solar energy provides all domestic hot water, plus comfortable hydronic slab heating of the home in the cooler months of the year. This same central solar system also takes the chill off the water in the 12-meter lap pool. Within two weeks of its opening, 'South Solitary' had won three first place building and design industry awards, and since then, has earned several others. There are no houses - just coastal forest and dunes - between the house and the beach. The path to the beach provides a pleasant 5-minute stroll along walkways that pass beside beautiful paperbark wetlands, leading you to a boardwalk that takes you to the beach across a vegetated coastal dune system. It's a busy day on this three kilometre golden sand beach if you can actually see more than a dozen people - generally, you'll be walking on your own. Looking out from the beach beyond the surf, the horizon is broken by the Solitary Islands, with dolphins, Ospreys and Sea Eagles patrolling the water just off the beach, and for several months of the year, migrating humpback whales passing close inshore. The home is fully furnished with top-of-the-range Poliform furniture, and can comfortably accommodate a single family of two adults and two children or up to six adults in its three bedrooms. There are no additional beds, cots, or convertible sofas. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed and adjoins a large ensuite which includes a 2-person bath. The remaining two bedrooms both feature queen-sized beds and share a bathroom between. All bedrooms and bathrooms are hydronically heated during the cooler months by a solar powered in-slab floor heating system. The house has comfortable lounges, a family dining bar made from a solid slab of local hardwood, a covered patio outdoor dining and entertainment area, an office, flat screen televisions, a large gourmet kitchen with separate gas and electric induction cooktops, three ovens, an oversized ice-making refrigerator, dishwasher, and a walk-in pantry. There is a secure free wireless internet system, and a multi-room A-bus sound system that uses IPod or IPhone docks to play your own music. A 12-metre lap pool stretches the length of the front boundary for use on those occasions where a few laps seems like a better choice than a surf in the nearby ocean. The solar system takes the chill off the swimming pool water in cooler weather. Lying in bed at night, you can hear the surf beyond the trees and dunes, and in the morning, the birds begin their background chorus - the soulful butcher bird with his variety of calls and imitations of other birds, kookaburras laughing at the world, currawongs and magpies echoing through the wetland forest, and any number of large black cockatoos, honeyeaters, and small native finches all add to the unending soundtrack of the bushland and the white noise of the surf. The beach is at the edge of the unique Solitary Islands Marine Park, where the southernmost remnants of the prehistoric Barrier Reef can still be found, and where spectacular recreational scuba diving opportunities are available year round. So what do you want to do....? Just kick back and go nowhere further than the pool? Walk along the surf beach every morning and evening? Walk or drive through eucalypt and sub-tropical rainforests? Go scuba diving on local reefs in the Solitary Islands Marine Park, whale watch, game fish, golf or surf? Or does simply sitting at the edge of the dunes with a coffee and watching the humpback whales going past sound like the perfect way to enjoy this place? More

About the neighbourhood
The house is on a quiet street set within 200 metres of a surf beach with only wetlands and sand dunes between the house and the surf. The beach faces the Solitary Islands, with Split Solitary Island a few hundred metres offshore, the larger South Solitary Island about 10 kilometres out to sea on the horizon, and Northwest Solitary Island along the coast to the north. The ocean vistas from the beach encompass the Solitary Islands Marine Park, where thousands of humpback whales migrate north and south along the coast during the spring and autumn months. This stretch of coastline is the only place on the east coast of Australia where the continental dividing range actually extends all the way to the beach. The ranges are covered by extensive native eucalyptus hardwood forests, and have many...
How to get there
Coffs Harbour airport has numerous daily return flights to Sydney, which is only 45 minute's flying time by jet. The airport is serviced by the three largest Australian domestic airlines. The airport is accessible from any airport in Australia with no more than one stop. The Coffs Harbour train station is serviced daily by passenger services between Sydney and Brisbane. Travel time is approximately 9 hours from Sydney and six hours from Brisbane. The Pacific Highway runs between Sydney and Brisbane, and passes through Coffs Harbour, and only 400 metres from North Sapphire Beach. Most of the highway is high speed four lane expressway, with driving time from Sydney approximately 6 hours, and from Brisbane approximately 4 hours. Queensland's famous Gold Coast is only 3.5 hours driving time away.
