STRATHCONA COTTAGE, a 2 bedroom cozy, well maintained, cottage with great Lake Views and Sunsets. Updated yearly. One of the few last authentic cottages on Shawnigan Lake. This 70 + year old cottage is only a stones throw to the lake and the dock where you can moor your boat, play in the water or just relax. Wander among the tall stately trees in the backyard and woods beyond. This is a Perfect Setting for a Relaxing Getaway any time of the year! It is also believed to house E.J. Hughes parents while they were caretakers for the famous Strathcona Lodge. Our other property next door is where E.J. Hughes himself lived and painted the majority of his works for 20 years. Strathcona Cottage: *Sleeps 5 *Approx. 700 square feet. *Master bedroom, queen bed with lake views. *Second bedro...STRATHCONA COTTAGE, a 2 bedroom cozy, well maintained, cottage with great Lake Views and Sunsets. Lovely 2 bed cottage very well equipped and comfortable. Great kitchen for cooking and large open dining and lounge space. All spotlessly clean and well maintained. The only disappointment was the location as set back from a very busy and loud road. The house is not on the lake and you have to cross the road to get to the shared pontoon mostly used by others in the lake house. Not suitable for children or for those craving peace and quiet. The lake is surrounded by private properties with own access to the water. In order to swim you would need to drive ti one of the local small 'beach' areas or public parks. A good area to explore.

The cottage is located across a fairly busy street from the lake and dock. The cottage itself was perfect - not too ornate or too rough - just right! The kitchen is fully equipped even though I brought my own knives. Behind the cottage is a rarely used rail line. If you head south on the line for 30-45 minutes you will come to the last spike in the rail way. Heading north is just a nice walk! Coffee and pastries are located 2 minutes away from the cottage though the hours are a little strange. The coffee shop opens at 7:00 am and the bakery at 8:00 am. A thoroughly relaxing time!

I am so glad that you took a walk down the train tracks to the "very last" spike of the Canadian Pacific Railroad. It is indeed an interesting monument and a peaceful walk. Thank you very much for your kind comment about the interior of Strathcona Cottage. The cottage decor tries to capture what the lake looked like many years ago with old photographs and paintings but all within the modern comforts of home. The road is the only road that goes around the lake and it pretty well hugs the shoreline for the most part. It is hard to get around that. It was a pleasure to have you stay with us and we hope to see you again in the near future.

About the neighbourhood
Shawnigan Lake is located approximately 48 km (30 mi) north of Victoria, and borders the communities of Cobble Hill and Mill Bay. Several new residential developments have been built, both in the Shawnigan Lake area as well as in surrounding areas. The village of Shawnigan Lake, located on the eastern shore, contains two small general stores, three restaurants, several beaches and various small businesses including a barber, , and two coffee shops. There is also a museum, run by the Shawnigan Lake Historical Society. The north-west end of the village also includes many summer cabins and a large lakeside park. The south end of the lake is largely undeveloped, discounting the lakeshore itself, with scattered farmland and numerous hiking trails. Our cottages are located on Strathcona Bay nea...
