The casual passerby looking through our gated entry may think that here is an expensive rental property that charges extra for its privacy and beautiful surroundings. Not at all! Our guests quickly learn that they are in a surprisingly affordable, welcoming and homelike enclave that sets a relaxed tone for an easygoing vacation away from the “getting and spending” of our daily routines. Inside the Mayan-style limestone wall is an intimate tropical garden with a central plaza where guests can sit and enjoy the visual beauty of bright flowers and the melodic burble of water splashing down the natural rock fountain. There are only three apartments in the villa, each distinctively decorated from our eclectic collection of art, folk art and antiques. Rooms are spacious yet feel cozy, with comfortable furniture instead of the built-in concrete couches of cookie cutter condos or the commercial pseudo elegance of all-inclusive resort hotels. The two rooms in Suite 100 are surprisingly large, bright and cheerful. The open design front room contains the fully equipped kitchen, dining nook and daybed. The bedroom has a queen bed, a futon and a sitting/TV lounge with rattan armchairs. The palapa shaded balcony looks out onto the front garden and the fountain plaza. Casa Gatos sits on a quiet lane that runs alongside a small woodland park, which serves as a buffer to the bustling traffic of the beaches and the condo zone. You can sit on the shaded balconies of the upper floor, doze in the sun on the rooftop amid cactus, yucca, aloe and palms, or sit in the shade of the thatch covered gazebo while enjoying views of the surrounding jungle and sea. Que Onda Restaurant is on the corner of our street, La Lunita and Buena Vida restaurants are on the beach of Half Moon Bay. In the commercial area at the entrance to Akumal Beach are seven more restaurants and luncheonettes. There are also cafes, restaurants and pizzerias in Akumal Pueblo and the nearby town of Chemuyil. Some of the surrounding all-inclusive resorts offer day passes and accept outside diners at their restaurants. At Bahia Principe resort are a 27 hole golf course and a shopping center with restaurants, tourist shops and even a casino. Numerous species of birds share the open areas of North Akumal, while for people-watching, just stroll through the streets of our residential neighborhood that lies between Half Moon Bay and Yalku Lagoon. See neighbors walking their dogs, visitors jogging and biking, and, perhaps, a cluster of locals stopping in the road as they exchange the latest gossip. We have arranged for our guests to get a one-third discount for entry to Yalku Lagoon. Reservations of five days or more include a free day pass to Yalku and tickets for one day to Akumal Beach and Bay, with access to private bathrooms, lockers, showers and a private area off the beach. Interaction with guests
Our object at Casa Gatos is, through unobtrusive hospitality, to provide our guests a welcoming, at home experience. We are there to answer questions and assist them in finding attractions and arranging activities that suit their tastes. We are happy to share with them our thirty-five years' worth of experience in the area and point them toward some of the interesting attractions to be found on and off the tourist track.

About the neighbourhood
What sets the Riviera Maya apart from the typical beach-and-bar tropical tourist destinations are the variety of activities and sights within a day’s radius: hundreds of cenotes, numerous bays and nature parks, deep water reefs; spectacular ruins of such ancient Maya cities as Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itza, Ek Balam; the Spanish Colonial city of Valladolid, quaint Yucatecan pueblos and haciendas; the tourist meccas, Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Getting around
There are taxis available in Akumal and public vans run every few minutes on the highway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Bicycles or golf carts can be rented to get around within Akumal. Tours to major attractions can be arranged.
