Set in the spectacular Wasdale valley, Roan Wood is a comfortable cottage sleeping 4. The location is stunning, with views to the front across to the dramatic Wasdale Screes, and to the rear towards the towering butresses of Buckbarrow. From the front gate, there is the famous vista of the mountains surrounding Wasdale Head - Yewbarrow, Great Gable, Scafell Pike and Scafell - with a glimpse of Wastwater in the valley bottom. A gentle stroll from the cottage brings you to the lake shore and the viewpoint voted as 'The Nation's Favourite View'. This is truly a walker's paradise with paths ascending to Buckbarrow, Middle Fell and Seatallen immediately behind the cottage, or a few minutes drive to Wasdale Head opens up a huge range of mountain walks. There are excellent pubs nearby in Nether Wasdale, and Gosforth is 10 minutes drive where most amenities are available. And it's a good option for families too. Kids will like playing in the stream behind the cottage or in the shallows of the lake. And it's a short drive to the lovely sandy beach at Seascale. Other local attractions include Muncaster Castle and the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. The cottage itself is modern inside, and has all the creature comforts to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. This well equipped cottage sleeps 4, one double and one twin. All power, heating and bed linen included. Please note that you do need to provide your own towels.More

We've just returned from a short break at Roan Wood in mid-February. Given the weather switched from very wet to sun, snow and a bitterly cold north-westerly we found the cottage very warm and cosy with plenty of hot water. There are ample walks from...More

Our only complaint was the fact that when we really needed to phone out from the cottage on account of an emergency, we were unable to get cellphone reception. The cottage would definitely improve by installing a fastland phone. In the event we got hold...More

We're glad that overall this guest enjoyed their stay and are sorry that it was interrupted by a medical emergency. Unfortunately, like a lot of areas of rural Britain, mobile coverage is patchy - not all networks get signal, or it's intermittent, or it's non-existent....More

About the neighbourhood
Wasdale is one of the most spectacular and unspoilt parts of the Lake District. The view across Wastwater towards Great Gable has been voted 'The Nation's Favourite View' and it is not hard to see why, with the dramatic Wasdale Screes plunging almost 2000 feet into the waters of the lake. A few minutes walk from Roan Wood Cottage will bring you to this stunning viewpoint. Behind the cottage are walks directly up into the hills - to Greendale Tarn, Buckbarrow, Middle Fell and Seatallen. Wasdale Head is 3 miles away and numerous walks radiate out to Pillar, Great Gable, Scafell and Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. There are two excellent pubs in Nether Wasdale, 2 miles away, and a pleasant walk through the fields. Gosforth is a 10 minute drive, where you will find shops, pubs, a cafe and a restaurant.
How to get there
It is possible to get to the cottage by train to Seascale and then use Gosforth Taxis to get to the cottage. We have had guests who say they have hardly used the car all week, but in general most people would probably feel that a car is essential.
