The picturesque village of Caherdaniel with its charming pub 'The Blind Piper' which offers excellent food, traditional music and has a children's outside play area is a 20 minute walk. Wheelchair users please note the following features about Gorteen. • Access: Gorteen which is in an elevated location, is accessed from the main road up a steep hill and a wheelchair user would need a car to leave the property surrounds. The setting down point for vehicles at the front door has a dropped kerb and there are no steps in the property. Corridors and doors conform to the required width for easy passage.. Therefore it is suitable for exiting a car outside the front door unaided, entering through the front door and also for maneuvering within,i.e. rooms, kitchen, toilet etc. • Bedrooms: All rooms including bedrooms are on the ground floor and are laid out in a way that is suitable for a wheelchair user and all main sockets, light switches, door handles are within reach of a seated position. • Bathrooms: The en suite bathroom has a wheel-in (level access) entry to the shower . There is a fold-down shower seat. Taps and grab rails are accessible from a seated position. There is enough space to transfer from chair to toilet safely with appropriate handrails. • Kitchen facilities: The kitchen has lowered worktops, sink and hob. Oven, microwave and fridge are at an accessible height. Josephine the owner will only be too happy to answer any question you have or to supply you with more images.

Perfect holiday home
Our holiday was absolutely glorious. The weather was so generous to us. Gorteen was perfect. House location affords magnificent views. Furthermore the house itself catered for all our needs, spotless, comfortable and spacious. Josephine is a lovely host and is so accessible. We will be back.

Excellent wheelchair accessible accommodation, spacious, clean , homely, lovely decor- fab location
I returned from the most wonderful holiday-( Sept 2021) this house was perfect for a number of reasons- fully wheelchair accessible with stunning views, proximity to spectacular scenery and picturesque towns and the warmest of welcomes from Josephine who makes you feel right at home. You will need a car to access the house as there is steep driveway , but manageable at the same time. The house is a bungalow, level access, plenty of space to manoeuvre a wheelchair, 3 large bedrooms one of which was disabled friendly bathroom ensuite with level access shower and toilet with grab rails etc. It has lowered kitchen worktops and windows, so that you can enjoy the beautiful views from a sitting position from inside. Spotlessly clean, with all mod cons- beautifully decorated and homely. There are so many places to visit and the scenery is breathtaking. I would highly recommend Josephine house for a holiday, and we intend to return in 2022.

Excellent wheelchair accomadation
I have returned from having spent a wonderful time with my mother and brother in Josephine's homely wheelchair accessible bungalow in Gorteen Caherdaniel. You will need a car to access this house as it is located on a hill, but worth it for the panoramic views. The house itself is fully wheelchair accessible, the rooms are spacious with plenty of turning space to manoeuvre a wheelchair. The kitchen has lowered worktops and sink, the ensuite has a level access shower, toilet with raised seat and grab rails. The house is spotless and beautifully decorated. Bedrooms very spacious with plenty of storage space. I would highly recommend Josephine's house to spend a holiday - particularly if you are looking for wheelcahir friendly accommodation.

Lovely, simple cottage in a stunningly beautiful area.
For me, the landscape is king here. Mile after mile beautiful coastal scenery, clean white beaches, some hidden coves, others family friendly. A gentle way of life, idyllic. Our cottage was good value, easily accessible once you were in it, however, it would be difficult for a mobility challenged to get there without a vehicle and the nearest (very lovely) beach, was close but across and along a fairly well used road. Josephine was helpful and friendly, she recommended a visit to the ring of Skellig ,thank you, enjoyed by all three generations of our party. Closer by was Derrynane house and the fairy trail, near to Derrynane beach, simply stunning.

Really lovely
Gorgeous location with stunning views and total privacy. As a wheelchair user I can confirm that the property was spot on with the exception of the shower seat, a little too small for a paraplegic, I felt unstable on it. Lovely and cosy, when, due to the weather we lit the fire and remained at home all afternoon. Electricity and oil was approx €12 for our 3 night stay. Very reasonable. Plenty of info on the sights and tours available in the county. Sneem (where we picked up the keys) was great for restaurants and bars and supermarkets. The owner popped in briefly after pre arranging to say Hi and Bye. She gave us fantastic ideas on which routes to see the " best of the best" and she was right. A lovely half day tour in stunning weather. Thank you very much Josephine! Highly recommend.

Really nice location
The house is really cosy and in a very good condition. It´s modern, heating works well (important in October, but the chimney is fun as well...), and there is lot of space. It was a warm welcome, having the chimney already prepared to get on fire. :) Having outstanding view from the terrace to the sea, especially in the morning. Location is really great for exploring the western part of the Ring of Kerry. There is so much to see there. Great beaches, great locations, also great to visit in autumn. It´s a little bit hard to find if it's dark, so use the small map delivered with the key, and need to remember some marks during daytime when arring at darkness. ;) Do not miss the pub in Caherdaniel, having live music on Sunday and Thursday at 21:30. It's really dynamic who will join there for playing...

Lovely Holiday
Recently back from our stay in Gorteen. Gorteen is ideally situated for exploring the ring of Kerry and further afield. There is a small beach a stone throw away beside O'Carroll's Cove Beach Bar and Restaurant, brilliant location if you're not looking to travel. Whilst Caherdaniel itself has little going on, everything is accessible by car. Derrynane House is only a 10min drive and has a wonderful fairy trail and beach brilliant day out for the kids. There are other beautiful parts of the gardens to visit too, we didn't due to have two small children with us. Be sure to stop off in the coffee shop at Derrynane house to sample the scones and Fairy Cakes. Waterville is 20-30 minute drive depending on roadworks, with a beautiful stoney beach and artisan shops, lovely place for a picnic. We stopped off in waterville on our way to Skelligs chocolate factory (be sure to use a Sat Nav) where we got to watch chocolate being made and more importantly got to sample LOTS ! Came home with bags full of treats. We travelled an hour out to Kenmare which has a LIDL, Supervalu and Aldi to get some essentials. There seems to be a daily markets where you can buy locally produced goods from breads, fruit vegetable and fish to rugs, pottery, jewelry and clothing. A day well spent. We decided to visit Blueberry Farm in Sneem with the two children (aged 4 and 1.5) coming from the city we have been to petting farms but never had we had such an educational and hands on experience such as this, children got to feed the animals, groom them and even milk a beautiful jersey cow. My four year old said it was the best part of the holiday (costs 40 euro for a family of four for an hour and a half). Stopped off in Sneem afterwards for food. The house itself is lovely and offers plenty of space, we had planned initially to travel with six adults, three small children and a dog however due to unforeseen circumstances we traveled with four adults and two children. The property overlooks the bay and it is a beautiful space to sit and have a cup of coffee on the bench, however I feel that it isn't suitable to allow a dog of the lead as the lane leads onto a busy road, and isn't suitable to allow children to play freely either as there is no gate securing the property. For those reasons spent little time outside and instead opted to go to the beach to allow the children to burn energy. Inside the house there are three brilliant size bedrooms, the room with a double bed and a single is an ideal family room, however the single bed could do with being updated as it was a bit wobbly and when we looked underneath there were a couple of wooden slates missing and some had been replaced with what seemed to be MDF board. The bedroom with two single beds which my partner opted to stay in due to the extra space and fear of the single bed collapsing had notice a slight draught coming through the window. The living room/kitchen area is an excellent space to relax after a busy day, and a fire to stay cosy (we opted not to use the fire because of the small children) Josephine called a few times throughout the week and was very welcoming and helpful, the banana bread was delicious. All in all it was a fantastic stay and we got to do a lot of activities as mentioned earlier. A few minor things we noticed but not enough to put us off. Would recommend this for anyone looking to explore the Ring of Kerry.

Retreat
Very quiet location, area of outstanding natural beauty, fantastic views of Kenmare bay, wonderful night sky, within the Kerry dark sky reserve. Spent a week at Gorteen with my husband who is a full-time wheelchair user, great wee place, wide doors, wheel in shower, shower chair available, lowered pathway, lowered light switches, great place for travelling the ring of Kerry. Well equipped, had everything we needed, and we were able to bring the dogs. WiFi was available and we never lost connection once which was great for such a rural location. Fire was set ready to light which was great after the long journey we had. Loved the banana bread Josephine the owner brought us round.

Your great review of Gorteen is much appreciated, thank you. The endorsement you gave of the wheelchair facilities is most helpful to those with similar requirements considering a stay there. We are really delighted that you enjoyed your holiday. Josephine & the O'Neill Family.
