Idyllic Exmoor Cottage on banks of River Exe
We booked this cottage 18 months in advance as we contemplated how to do our first post Covid hiking trip in the UK. We could not have been more delighted when we rolled up to the village of Winsford, Somerset and found the cottage in pristine condition with a welcome note from the Owners. The cottage is an oasis of tranquility. The main bedroom has the most comfortable of beds with down pillows and duvet. The kitchen has been recently modernized and had everything we needed for our month long stay. A cozy sitting room with open fireplace was there for any chilly weather, however, we did not encounter much of that during our stay. We hiked throughout Exmoor National Park doing about 225 kilometres, most of it from the front doorstep of Ball Cottage, and sometimes using the local 198 bus, which stops 150 yards away from the cottage to access trails further away from Winsford. A highlight was sitting down by the river sipping on a glass of wine, watching the Brown Trout rising to the fly after a long hike or even better walking for 5 minutes over to the local Winsford pub ( Royal Oak) which served up excellent meals and cold cider. We highly recommend a stay at this place.
