The cottage is on one of the highest points of Bernera which gives it a wide panoramic view of an area which is known for it's outstanding natural beauty. It is close to beaches and coastal and inland walks many of which have been sign posted out by the community. The views pan out to Achmore, Uig and old Hill in Bosta. Harsgeir View is so named because of its view from the kitchen window to the tiny island of Harsgeir in the mouth of West Loch Roag which surrounds Bernera and Uig. Leave the cottage, walk over the bridge at Valasay, up the side of the Toab Loch and over to the fantastic beach at Bosta were the reconstructed Iron Age house sits on the original archaeological site which was discovered in the 1990's. The finds of this dig can been seen at the community run museum which serves tea and coffee during the summer. Bird watchers and wildlife lovers are regular visitors to the cottage, Seals, Buzzards and even Otters are known to inhabit the immediate location. Use our tripod and zoom binocular to sport the most distant of birds. A lot of attention has been paid to furnishing this cottage with everything that you need. Very clean and comfortable. Lovely views from the cottage of the rugged countryside and only a short drive to our favourite beach - Bosta. Calum was a wonderful host - hospitable and attentive.

If you're looking for a peaceful holiday in a remote, ruggedly beautiful location but without sacrificing creature comforts then Harsgeir View on Bernera is the ideal place. The cottage sits in a fairly elevated position in the village of Hacklete and from the property there are fine views of Loch Rog (the sea loch which surrounds Bernera) as well as of the surrounding landscape. We spent two weeks in there July 2022 and despite indifferent weather we had a very pleasant and comfortable stay. The owners, Calum and Anne, have thoughtfully renovated the cottage to a very high standard. We found the kitchen to be well appointed with a wide range of good quality cooking utensils. The eco-friendly heating system is both effective and easy to adjust, making the cottage cosy, comfortable and welcoming even when the weather is unfriendly. There is also a log burner, but we didn't need it. The wi-fi is excellent. As with all crofting communities the local population is dispersed over a wide area and within villages such as Hacklete, the houses are well spaced apart, often standing in their own fields. It is certainly remote – even by Lewis standards – but if it's peace and quiet you want, Harsgeir View will not disappoint. To holiday in Bernera a car is an absolute essential . There are now no shops at all in the vicinity (despite indications to the contrary on the internet) so there is no alternative to stocking up in advance with provisions. (We recommend the large Co-op store in Stornoway.) There is ample cupboard space in the kitchen and there is a freezer. Having been warned in advance, we had no problems - but planning ahead pays dividends! One absolute “must see” on Bernera is Bosta beach which is only 15 minutes away by car (or a 2 hour walk along a rugged coastal path). The beach itself is really beautiful and in 1992 an Iron Age house was discovered there buried in the sand. The original has been re-buried to preserve it but a replica house has been created close to the original. It is open to the public and is well worth a visit.

Yet again a big thanks to Calum and Anne for another amazing stay at this property. Warm and welcoming hosts who we are always pleased to see again. If your hesitating about visiting the islands and think hmm will I enjoy it ? Yes!!! You most definitely will, Lewis & Harris has stole my heart and I can’t get enough. This property is placed perfectly in the middle of the island and allows you to explore both Harris and Lewis without too much travel in between. The property is cosy, comfortably and stylish inside, a perfect place to rest the head after a day roaming the hills and glens of Harris. The scenery and wildlife is otherworldly a true place of beauty. Harris is renowned for its great beaches but if you wish to stay within Lewis there are beaches just as stunning. I will be back again!!!

We have enjoyed numerous Scottish Island Holiday's, over a number of year's. Skye x 2,Islay, Mull also Inverness and touring Caravan traveling primarily West and North. None of those holiday's; upon reflection; come anywhere close to the sensational 2 week's we experienced, staying as Guest's of Mr. & Mrs. Watt. Perfection is our review title, because that was what we enjoyed. As a Host Callum has no equal; in our experience; absolutely amazing, a true Gentleman, courteous, informative, knowledgeable, completely focused on his Customer, willing to do anything relevant to ensure complete satisfaction and enjoyment whilst staying at this simply marvelous Cottage. We would re-book in a heartbeat except for wanting to visit the Lower Island's to complete the mental picture-show that is being stored in our heart's as a treasured time. Harsgeir played a major part in those memorie's, I can assure you , if you are lucky enough to be able to stay there, you will fall in love with it as we have done. Every detail important in a successful Holiday Let was more than satisfied many times over. We can not praise Harsgeir Cottage, Callum and Anne enough and we WILL return ! I have already recommended Harsgeir to 2 of my Client's and will continue to do so happily.

If you want peace, quiet this is the croft for you. We have been many times and returning a second time this year to enjoy the croft with all its mod cons including a new kitchen and green heating system, to enjoy the wildlife and scenary as it feels home from home. The hosts Calam and Ann are always welcoming and happy to give helpful advice. We cannot wait to return for the second time in October this year. Thank you both.

The croft is in a lovely location close to the sea and beaches and set in wild countryside. It is very well kitted out with a new kitchen. We enjoyed walking, fishing, bird watching and bought lobsters from the little quay. Easy to get to anywhere else on Lewis. Fabulous! Guy Beech

We went as a family of three - husband, 20-something son and bouncy puppy dog - to this lovely cottage for a week in June. The cottage was very comfortable had everything we needed, with thoughtful touches like a welcome basket with shortbread, artisan bread and milk. The rooms were all nicely furnished, comfy beds and if anything the photos don't do the place justice. We truly felt it was a home from home. The island feels like a place out of time. We had a particularly memorable couple of days on Bosta Beach, including a boat trip to Little Bernara with the owner's brother in law (highly recommend this!) It was a great base for exploring Lewis and we also had a fantastic road trip to spectacular Harris. We didn't meet Calum and Anne, but they contacted us to check that all was well (it was) and generally couldn't have been more kind and welcoming.

This by far is the best holiday I’ve ever had! Let’s start with accommodation, the cottage is cosy , and comfortable with extremely tasteful decor, it has all the amenities needed with a brand new kitchen. There is a lovely walk 10 mins down the road from the cottage which takes you along the beautiful berena coastline where you can walk all the way Bosta beach which is stunning. The hosts Callum and his wife are very friendly and welcoming and will happily give you lots of info about the local wildlife. The cottage is situated in an ideal location for both the exploration of Lewis and Harris and only 40 mins to Stornaway for all your big shops. I highly recommend this property ! Go for it you won’t regret it !

Harsgeir is a wonderful place for a Hebridean stay. The cottage is very comfortable and cosy and the newly fitted kitchen was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. The views across the island from the cottage are stunning and our dog loved his morning walk down the hill to the water’s edge at the end of the croft. We explored both Lewis and Harris from here and the journeys were great for admiring both the amazing scenery and the local wildlife. Calum was a great host, the communication with him was easy and nothing would have been too much trouble. Highly recommended!

About the neighbourhood
The village of Hacklete is one of many small villages on Bernera which make up this unique rural environment where the people are friendly and welcoming. The cottage is centered in a district steeped in Norse history Bernera (Bjorns Island) The island is the site of the Land Riots of 1874 a direct response to the Highland Clearances which eventually led to a new Act of Parliament which gave crofters protection from eviction. The areas main asset is its views - and wildlife. Otter Seal Buzzard and Eagle all from time to time are spotted. Red Deer are becoming a regular sight on route to the cottage.
Getting around
Great inter -island bus service but a car is quite a bonus. You can hire bikes in Stornoway and it would be poss to come to the cottage and not bring a car. Walking and use of bike is very possible.
