Golden eagles often nest half way up the ridge. As you walk up the site, the loch opens up, revealing its 'H' shape and small island in the middle. We're told that in dry weather it's possible to walk to the island over stepping stones from the southerly bank. Bernera is surrounded by Loch Roag and is joined to Lewis by a road bridge that was built in 1953. There is good access to the tourist attractions on the west coast of Lewis and around Uig. Stornoway is the principal town and is a 40 minute drive. The location is great for water sports and walking holidays. The house is less than 1 mile from Bosta beach with its beautiful sandy beach and Iron Age house; we often walk there and back whilst the dinner cooks. There is a small shop with Post Office and community centre with a cafe in the nearest village about 1 mile away. DETAILS We've designed the house with the needs of the outdoor life in mind. There is a large entrance boot room and a secure external store room with plenty of space for wetsuits, drysuits, wellies, walking boots, bicycles or fishing equipment. The heart of the house is a large open plan kitchen, living room and dining room. The living room area is full height open to the roof and has a wood-burning stove with slate hearth. The whole area overlooks the loch with large floor to ceiling windows in the living room and dining room that open onto the patio. The kitchen has a full height fridge and a separate full height freezer so you can do a big shop on arrival in Stornoway. There is an oven, induction hob, microwave and dishwasher. The separate utility room keeps the noise of the washing machine and dryer out of the living areas. Local TV and mobile phone reception are poor so we have installed satellite TV and full fibre-to-the-premises ultra-fast broadband. Bernera is remote community selected for broadband funding by the Scottish Government. There is a Blu-ray/DVD player and a Bluetooth music player. Downstairs is a double bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs there are two further bedrooms - one double, one twin, and shower room. The downstairs and upstairs bedrooms are separated which works well if you have two parties eg grandparents downstairs. The house is extremely energy efficient. An air source heat pump provides environmentally friendly heating and hot water. The main living area and bathrooms have underfloor heating, bedrooms have radiators. Please note that the house is strictly non-smoking and that we are unable to accept pets. Children are welcome although at the moment we don't have any baby equipment eg cot or highchair. More

About the neighbourhood
Bernera is on the west side of Lewis, surrounded by Loch Roag. It;s joined to Lewis by a road bridge which was built in 1953. There is good access to the tourist attractions on the west coast and around Uig. Stornoway is a 40 minute drive.Bernera has a number of local attractions. Bosta beach is a large white beach but with good sheltered spots, fabulous views of outlying islands and a time and tide bell which is rung by the rise of the tide at high water. At the rear of the beach is a replica Iron Age House similar to those uncovered by storms in 1993. The house is staffed by local volunteers and supported by donations. The main settlement is at Breaclete and within walking distance of Breaclete is a restored Norse mill. A longer walk takes you to the Bernera Lobster Pond. The best walk ...
