The house is set in a tranquil location overlooking Loch na Muilne on Bernera. Bernera is on the west side of Lewis, surrounded by Loch Roag. It's joined to Lewis by a road bridge that was built in 1953 and has has recently been replaced. There is good access to the tourist attractions on the west coast of the island and around Uig. Stornoway and Tarbert are both a 40 minute drive. The house won the best architect designed house in the Outer Hebrides Design Awards 2016, beating other houses built in 2014 and 15 The site is framed by the loch in front of the house and the ridge behind, providing a picturesque setting and shelter from the weather. Golden eagles often nest half way up the ridge. As you walk up the site, the loch opens up, revealing its 'H' shape and small island in the middle. We're told that in dry weather it's possible to walk to the island over stepping stones from the southerly bank. The house is less than a mile from Bosta beach with its beautiful sandy beach and Iron Age house; we often walk there and back whilst the dinner cooks. At Breaclete, the main village on Bernera, there is a community centre with a cafe. In Kirkibost, there is an honesty shop with good range of local produce and everyday basics. DETAILS We've designed the house with the needs of the outdoor life in mind. There is a large entrance boot room and a secure external store room with plenty of space for wetsuits, drysuits, wellies, walking boots, bicycles or fishing equipment. The heart of the house is a large open plan kitchen, living room and dining room. The living room area is full height open to the roof and has a wood-burning stove with slate hearth. The whole area overlooks the loch with large floor to ceiling windows in the living room and dining room that open onto the patio. The kitchen has a full height fridge and a separate full height freezer so you can do a big shop on arrival in Stornoway. There is an oven, induction hob, microwave and dishwasher. The separate utility room keeps the noise of the washing machine and dryer out of the living areas. Local TV and mobile phone reception are poor so we have installed satellite TV and full fibre-to-the-premises ultra-fast broadband. Bernera is remote community selected for broadband funding by the Scottish Government. There is a Blu-ray/DVD player and a Bluetooth music player. Downstairs is a double bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs there are two further bedrooms - one double, one twin, and shower room. The downstairs and upstairs bedrooms are separated which works well if you have two parties eg grandparents downstairs. The house is extremely energy efficient. An air source heat pump provides environmentally friendly heating and hot water. The main living area and bathrooms have underfloor heating, bedrooms have radiators. Please note that the house is strictly non-smoking and that we are unable to accept pets. Children are welcome although at the moment we don't have any baby equipment eg cot or highchair. More

We stayed one week August/September 2022 in this house. It was one of the best locations we visited. The house has a great view on the nearby loch and is in a walk distance from a beautiful beach. It has plenty of room for up to 6 people and is very well equipped. The kitchen has nearly everything you could imagine. Even good baking equipment is provided as well as some outdoor tableware to take to the nearby beach. Very good. We really loved staying there and enjoyed the silence. The looks in the nightly clear sky were absolutely breathtaking. I can recommend the Bernera walk which passes the house and a day trip to St Kilda. The booking experience was very good. Sally was very nice and clear in communication. Everything worked very well. The only issue I had was that I missed some mails in my SPAM folder. But even this could be dealt with very well. Thanks a lot to Sally. If possible we would definitely book again.

Beautiful house - real luxury and wonderful floor to ceiling windows across the loch. It had all we needed and very clean, new and comfortable. Also had a great upstairs which we didn’t need. It’s really on a island off an island - very quite as Lewis is but some great walks, beaches and sites close by. I suspect our visit will become an annual event.

The house is in a fantastic location itself but also perfectly placed to explore both Lewis and Harris. Sally was incredibly helpful in making the arrangements and also if we needed anything during our stay. Having stayed in a lot of rental houses - they just don't come this well equipped. The attention to detail of the house was excellent, it was spotlessly clean and the welcome basket is such a nice touch. The house seems to come with its own Golden Eagle which flew over the house and having Bosta Beach so close was a real treat. I cant imagine staying anywhere else on the island. My only complaint was that we had to leave.

We had a fantastic week at Loch View in late July. The house was clean, comfortable, well equipped and beautifully designed and decorated. It was only half a kilometre from Bosta Beach which is gorgeous. It was a great base for exploring Lewis and Harris. Superfast broadband, underfloor heating; everything you need to cook and serve the local lobster (bought off the boat from a local fisherman), soft comfortable sheets. Perfect whether you just want to kick back and relax and enjoy the views from house or if you want to go hiking, biking and sea kayaking! Our family of four were very comfortable with plenty of space and storage.

After our stay being delayed a year by COVID-19 we were delighted to finally be able to stay at Loch View. The house is simply stunning, with every mod con you could possibly want. It is beautifully designed and furnished and offers plenty of space. Beds were lovely and comfy, wifi was better than at our home in London, and the views from the house were fab. Property is remote but that is what makes it special, just make sure you don't forget any shopping as it is a bit of a trek to the nearest store. A stunning beach is a short 10-15 min walk away and as others drive past the house you can see them all jealously looking at Loch View. Wildlife on the islands is amazing, within walking distance of the house we saw a kestrel, buzzard and a golden eagle. You will not be disappointed if you come to stay.

Very relaxing week at Loch View mid September. Originally booked for April but COVID put an end to that. Sally has been most helpful and understanding in re-booking at this difficult time. We weren’t sure what to expect from the weather as it is the Outer Hebrides after all, but it ended up being mixed and on the whole good. An extremely comfortable house in a beautiful setting and well positioned on the beautiful island of Great Bernera enabling you to easily do day trips covering the whole of Lewis and Harris or just to chill at the house and enjoy what’s on the doorstep. Considering all the COVID regulations the house was still homely and well appointed. The COVID instructions and procedures were all very clear and we appreciated the work that had gone in to making Loch View as safe as possible and very clean. Interaction with Sally during our stay was very reassuring and professional. The house is well laid out with plenty of space in the open plan living/dining/kitchen and well furnished. We enjoyed the wood burner on the wet and windy evenings and it was so nice to have a good sized dining table for meals. Very comfortable beds and good showers (often the downfall of many self catering establishments). A real bonus having a utility room and plenty of space to remove outdoor gear and dry it out. The changing light and weather made the view out of the house across the little Loch interesting at all times of the day. So peaceful, just wish we could have stayed for longer.

We would thoroughly recommend a holiday in Loch View. Sally was extremely helpful throughout the booking process and continued to look after us throughout the stay. The location of the luxurious cottage was perfect for anyone wanting to experience Bernera and the Isle of Lewis. It was relatively easy to access all the delights and attractions of the local area from here. The property itself was extremely comfortable and had everything we needed to enjoy a relaxing break in spectacular surroundings. We particularly enjoyed the tranquillity of the area, the landscape and the opportunity to see some of the wildlife here. One week was just not enough to see everything and we would love to return soon.

We spent a week at Loch View and, as a family, we all loved it. The house is beautiful and perfectly appointed - having two boys, aged 10 and 12, the only anxiety was boys being boys which made us slightly nervous. Thankfully the boys were fine and our anxiety was alleviated! The specifications of the house are exceptional - from the underfloor heating, (welcome in October!), to the appliances, maps, guides, instructions and the views. Total comfort complete with a wonderful feel and ambience! The setting superb - only 1/4 mile from Bosta beach and only a short drive to the jaw-dropping Calanish. We loved our stay......................the only 'downside': there is so so so so so so much to see and do, explore and visit - oh well, we'll just have to return! Thank you

The house is very comfortable and in a peaceful location with a lovely Beach within a 20 minute walk. When the Sun was out the living area was bathed in sunlight which was a delight. Perfect for visiting the sites of Lewis & Harris if you don’t mind being being off the beaten track. We had a very enjoyable week even though weather wasn’t great the house made it special with cosy log burner, super comfortable bed and everything you could possibly need.

About the neighbourhood
Bernera is rich in local attractions. The house is less than a mile from Bosta beach - a large white beach with good, sheltered spots and fabulous views of outlying islands. At the rear of the beach is a replica Iron Age House, similar to those uncovered here by storms in 1993. Visit the restored Norse mill near Breaclete and carry on to the Bernera Lobster Pond. The best walk on the island is via Bosta, over the highest point on the island to Tobson , Valasay and Breaclete. Take refreshment en-route at the community centre café and visit the Bernera museum. In Kirkibost there is a well-stocked honesty shop. The loch opposite the house is stocked with brown trout and the house is close to the community slipway
Getting around
Bernera is on the west side of Lewis, surrounded by Loch Roag. It’s joined to Lewis by a road bridge which was built in 1953 and recently replaced. There is good access to Harris and to the tourist attractions on the west coast and around Uig. Stornoway is a 40-minute drive. Tarbert is about a 50 minute drive
