My suspicions were first aroused on the ferry to Islay when the owner contacted me by text to tell me that there was a storm coming and tried to offer me extra nights by cutting out AirBnB from the deal (SMS thread kept and provided to AirBnB) When we arrived we were presented with the "rule book" which is extensive (very extensive) and includes £100 fines for breaking the owners self-imposed COVID rules...... We ended up on a standby ferry crossing home and had to leave very early in the morning and couldn't clear the log burner of red hot ashes for obvious reasons. I'm then presented with additional cleaning charges for the cleaner to empty the log burner. It's a small place and the cleaning fee is already in three figures so I point blank refused to pay the extra. This is an owner who clearly doesn't like people standing up to him and quite an exchange by SMS followed. It ended by me telling him I wouldn't give him any review and I was under the impression he would do the same however he has since decided to trash me on AirBnB and very cleverly waiting until the response time had almost expired so I had no chance to respond. AirBnB and the Scottish Tourist Board are aware of this character. My advice - Islay is beautiful, the people are beyond friendly, there are so many fabulous places to stay - AVOID THIS ONE!!

Myself and 4 others have just recently visited Islay for a friends wedding. The island is beautiful, the wedding was perfect and there is so much more on the island beyond sipping delicious whisky. We stayed at Islay65, and although a lovely and faultless house and location the host, John, is without a doubt, the most unwelcoming and bullish host we have ever experienced. From the outset, John was cold and clearly decided he did not trust us. My friend, who was the one having to deal with him on AirBnb was having to continuously explain in great detail the purpose of our trip. After excessive messaging back and forth, we received a very comprehensive email stating all the house rules, tips to make the stay easier and Islay65’s Covid-19 safety measurements (which if you fail to comply, you could be charged with a minimum £100 penalty). We as a group, respectfully, took this email very seriously and we did everything correctly. Since leaving, John has shown his true colours and has been impossible to deal with. For example, in the email it states “all beds they have used or had access to” must be stripped on departure. One of the guests slept on the bottom bed of a bunk. Due to Covid being a respiratory virus and in the same room as the bottom bunk bed we stripped the top bed as we felt this was having “access to” and could have been potentially exposed. Instead of seeing our reasoning, we were accused of having other guests stay over and were a huge inconvenience to the cleaner. We can assure everyone this did not happen. And unfortunate circumstances followed that there was a broken slat on the top bunk bed. We have also been accused of breaking the slat as John is adamant we used it. We didn’t. His email does state if you break something to let him know, but because we didn’t do it we didn’t mention it. It turns out you MUST mention all breakages even if it already was there before your stay otherwise you will get the blame. So whoever stays check the whole house, document everything and let John know. Sadly John has decided that he is right, even though he has no proof and has since damaged my friends reputation on AirBnb, something we have appealed against. Plus, his response to some of our feedback was met with ridiculous sarcasm. If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful and easy stay then look elsewhere. John is not your friend and will sting you at any given chance. Absolute shame.

A great location and the house , especially the kitchen is incredibly well equipped. The house is very spacious for a family of four, with two energetic toddlers and we were sad to leave. Great communication from the owner and we would go back in a heartbeat. Highly recommended.

Islay65 is a fantastic home away from home on Islay. The house is very comfortable and ideally placed in the heart of Port Ellen. John is a tremendously responsive and helpful host. I very much look forward to returning to Islay65 on future trips to the island.

Loved the cottage and couldnt have chosen a better location with two good places to eat with an additional two pubs. Lots of days didnt use the car as you can walk to so many things. Would have given a 5 star rating but I am used to a power shower and the showers were a wee bit feeble. Picky I know.

Everything you could imagine in the kitchen and with a supply ot tea, sugar, coffee and milk there on arrival. Nice walks to three distilleries and the local beaches. Islay sea adventure wildlife tour is a good trip with chatty friendly staff. Our best trip was with Islay taxi tour of the northern distilleries (although it is an early start for whisky tasting).

We had a great stay in this property on Islay. It is plenty big enough for 6 adults, with 2 double rooms upstairs and a room with 2 bunk beds downstairs. Easy to walk to Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Lagavulin, and to get taxis to other distilleries. There are 2 restaurants, a Co-op and a pub a few doors down.
