As your ideal holiday home we offer you a truly exceptional property “The Hatchery” just outside the ancient village of Tolsta Chaolais on the west of Lewis. Sited above Loch na Muilne and within a couple of miles of the Callanish Stones and Dun Carloway Broch, the property is built into what was an old quarry hewn from the native rock. The road to Carloway runs past the front. The Hatchery is a beautifully built Finnish log house set on the site of the owner's old fish hatchery which has a waterfall and stream running past within twenty feet of the side door. We have just returned from a 5-night stay at The Hatchery - a family of four with teenagers aged 17 and 15. The property is in a beautiful location which is ideal for exploring both Lewis and Harris. It is spotlessly clean. The bathroom is lovely with a great shower, and plenty towels are provided. We arrived on quite a chilly day and the wood stove soon made it warm and cosy. The decking is great for sitting out with a cup of tea/coffee or a glass of wine. The midgies weren't too bad apart from in the early morning and late evening when the wind dropped. We loved watching the cattle come down to the lochan in the evening, beautiful sunsets, peaceful surroundings. There is no WiFi and we had no mobile phone reception in the property (Three network), but could get reception by walking a short distance along the road. A few days without the internet was very lovely but I did need to access work email one evening so took a wander up the road! For visits longer than the minimum stay, a freezer and dishwasher would be a handy addition. There is a small garage shop a few miles away and some honesty boxes locally; otherwise, for food shopping, there is a supermarket in Stornoway. Some previous reviews have mentioned a 'welcome' bottle of wine on arrival - we didn't have this but there were fresh flowers on the table which was a nice touch, and the owner came over to welcome us and make sure we had settled in. Overall, a wonderful holiday in a fabulous and unusual property. We wouldn't hesitate to return here to stay and would highly recommend.

A wonderful 4 days spent at The Hatchery. The accommodation was spotless with clear views across the loch and had everything we needed. No alarm clock for us because we awoke to the sound of the cuckoo most mornings. Close proximity to the Calanais stones, Carloway Broch and the Blackhouse village and of course some beautiful drives to glorious beaches you would only expect in the Caribbean. Our host was lovely and a late thank you to Mamie for her kindness and warmth. A stay would not be the same without trying Stornoway black pudding and the exquisite smoked salmon from the Stornoway smokehouse located at the ferry port. Thoroughly recommend and we are already trying to plan our next trip.

I stayed at the Hatchery with my two children (15&11) last month. I had wanted to visit the Isle of Lewis for a very long time and as our foreign holiday had been cancelled and with island bookings beginning to open back up after lockdown, I got lucky with an opening at this location. We were not disappointed, it was peaceful, in a fantastic location for touring the island during the day and then relaxing on the chair looking out over the loch at night with a cuppa! With working from home, home schooling and everything else throughout lockdown I was eager to step away from the laptop/phone and relax! As other reviews have commented, there is little or no mobile reception. With a teenage Daughter I thought this would be more of an issue but she actually said she enjoyed not looking at her phone all the time. However, it was exam results day when we were there and this did cause a problem with trying to get her results. Also, I had saved a list of places I wanted to visit on Trip Advisor but found I couldn’t research this at night but just a little thing. The house was spotless, plenty of parking and we loved sitting by the little stream listening to it. So relaxing! Lots of space inside and everything you need for a short break. I wasn’t aware of the provisions being provided in the property, so for others looking to travel light there was a coffee machine, towels, tea towels, loo roll/kitchen roll, washing liquid etc. Maybe it is just me but I’ve always had to take this type of item when staying self catering previously. I don’t recall it mentioned in the booking notes so perhaps some of this is left by previous visitors. There’s also a washing machine and tumble drier which is great. It is worth noting that the property is located on a quiet but fast road. It is set back from the road and certainly will not affect your stay, it is just something to be aware of if you were visiting with young children. There is however, a gate that can be used if required. I would definately recommend a stay at The Hatchery and would live to come back 😊

We have just returned from a fab 4 night stay . This is an exceptionally nice property set in the most beautiful backdrop . It has the most fantastic windows allowing you to soak in the view at all times. The outer hebrides is so worth a visit as the scenery is stunning and the locals really friendly . Came just at the right time for my family following lockdown . We will definitely return . Thank you for sharing your island with us Liz and family

This was a fantastic property to stay in whilst exploring Lewis and harris. It was only a 20 min drive from stornoway ferry and then from there, a great base for driving around the island exploring. The property was clean and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen, and even had local produce and prosecco waiting for us on arrival. Had olive oil, salt and pepper, rice, pasta and a few other bits and bobs which really make a difference when travelling. Very homely. Soft towels and hairdryer provided. Great views out the front of the property onto the loch. Had sky tv and a great speaker system for music aswell as board games and OS maps of the island which were very handy as there is limited internet on the island for using google maps. Gorgeous wood burning stove and for relaxing in the evening. A taxi into stornoway was £30 each way which was great if you want a night off driving. Would recommend this property and will be back! Wonderful house!

We have a wonderful time at the Hatchery, such a warm welcome and such a stunning house. The location meant we could explore the Isle of Lewis very easily, while also not having to go far to get to the food shops and attractions in Stornoway. Would love to go back to see more of the Isle.

We stayed at the hatchery following our wedding at the local hall. It was the perfect spot to unwind and relax after a busy day! The shower was fantastic , the bed was incredibly comfortable- the whole house just feels luxurious; decorated and furnished with high quality products. It has everything you need for your stay. It’s in a great location for exploring the west side area. The loch out the front provides a fantastic setting for a beautiful sunset as well! Highly recommended!
