Ideal Country Village Retreat
We wanted an out of town base to explore the Portsmouth area. Coachmans cottage was exactly what we hoped for. It is set in the grounds of a country house on the edge of the village/small town of Emsworth, 20 minutes away from the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard attractions. The large first floor lounge/dining area and decent sized bedroom were perfect for us 2 empty nesters to relax after each sightseeing day. The galley kitchen was downstairs with a snack table so stairs were inevitable. Everything was provided to a high standard. Would we recommend to friends and family? - Yes!

Perfect Cottage for Two
We had a great time here. Just what we needed. All mod cons and situated in a small village with local shops. Cottage in the grounds of the main house but was very private and even had electric gates on entry!! We will definitely return.

Beautiful & relaxing property
The coach house is a very beautiful property that felt like home as soon as you walk in, the host Sandra was very welcoming & left us a loaf of bread from The nearby bakery. The Stags Head pin is a stones throw away & is the typical village pub with lovely food & a great atmosphere The local train station is 25 mins walk to take you into Portsmouth, Emsworth the other local village is also worth a walk too We loved our stay & would happily book again

A lovely place to stay
The house was on two levels, the kitchen downstairs and the large sitting room and bedroom with en-suite upstairs. Everything was of good quality and very cosy and comfortable. The garden was great to sit out in in the evening. We did quite a lot of cycling from the house and there were plenty of cycle routes to choose from. Sandra and family were all very helpful and friendly suggesting some lovely pubs to go and eat at, especially The Fox Runs Free in Charlton.

Picture Perfect.
I wish I could give 10 stars, not just for the excellent accommodation, not just for the beautiful surroundings and village and place to visit but for the friendliness of our hosts Sandra and Hugh.We were ready for some rest and relaxation and really slept well in the very comfortable bed. Although we shared the drive with the family we felt very private. I cannot recommended the Coachmans Cottege highly enough.

LOVELY LOCATION, GOOD ACCOMMODATION
The location was perfect for what we required, good facilities in the village which is within walking distance from the Cottage. Although we didn’t meet the owner we had a couple of queries which were answered very quickly via email (we could have phoned but chose to use email). The Cottage has everything nearby that you may need for an easy, stress free stay including Pubs, Co-Op, Garage etc

Pleasent and comfortable coach house
We arrived on Saturday to be greeted by the cleaner not the owner who we did not see at all. First impressions of the property very pretty and lovely set up inside a loaf and butter etc where left for us on arrival. A comfortable bed lacking in large draw space but had two bed side draws and dressing table we were asked to park away from garage as it's was in use but couldn't get lights outside to work when arriving in the dark . Overall a nice place . Village pretty a few eating places .we had a few issues with the condition of the blinds in the bedroom and a few details which we felt a note left to Sandra the owner is being resolved .lovely big tv and dvds to watch local shop bit pricey the co op .we were a little disappointed with as l said a few things but hopefully these will be taken on board with the cleaner and owner who sent me a very nice txt . but we would stay again

I try to greet guest on arrival, however check in time is very flexible and arrangements have been made to ensure guests can arrive at their convenience including very late at night. I do not ask guests to inform me of their arrival time, therefore I am often not in when they do arrive. Many of our guests are enjoying a quiet few days away from their busy lives and I try to respect their privacy. Guests are given my contact details should they wish to contact me for any reason. Sorry you couldn't get the lights to work. There is an illuminated light switch directly above the Coachman's Cottage sign, (immediately to the left of the entrance door) that should have been fairly obvious. This turns the lights above and on either side of the door on. Both lights are in good working order and tested regularly. The security light comes on automatically when you drive up to the cottage, but the wisteria has flourished so much this year, that it had covered the light. I have now cut this back. I have replaced the dressing table with a full chest of drawers. Guests are asked to park directly in front of the cottage, just a few steps (6 or 7) from the front door. When parking here, they do not obstruct the garage, which is further away than the recommended parking space. I am delighted you enjoyed your stay despite these difficulties.

Disappointing
This property was advertised as a “cottage”. In fact it is an attic above the owner’s garage and in hot weather it is stifling. We had booked for a one week stay but left two days early because we were extremely uncomfortable during the hot weather. I really thought we would be staying in a cottage similar to the National Trust one we stayed in the previous week, which was wonderful and exactly as advertised. I felt conned due to the false advertising and very disappointed. I didn’t want to write a review but I have been bombarded with emails from Trip Advisor which I was unable to reply to. Here’s a tip for TripAvisor - if a client ignores your requests, stop sending them.

I find it difficult to believe that a one star review is justified. The cottage has had consistent 5 star reviews since July 2016. Of the 27 reviews left on TripAdvisor, 22 have been 5 star and 4 have been 4 star. The cottage remains in the same condition (or improved). The only difference is that on this weekend we had unseasonably hot weather. This was the bank holiday weekend when we had the spectacular lightning and thunderstorms. The temperatures and humidity was high and I believe the whole area (if not the whole country) was somewhat uncomfortable. The cottage was formerly a Coach House, housing both the coaches and the Coachman and the lay out of the accommodation remains largely as it would have been originally, with the kitchen on the ground floor and the living room, bedroom and bathroom on the 1st floor. This is precisely what was advertised. The photographs provided support the description. I realise that in Australia you would have turned on the air conditioning when the temperatures rose, but few privately owned one bedroom cottages in the UK are fitted with air conditioning and ours in no exception. I am sorry that you were disappointed but I certainly don't feel you were conned. I have no control over the weather.

About the neighbourhood
CHICHESTER: Approximately 7 miles from The Coachman Cottage lies the historical city of Chichester, one of the well preserved Georgian cities in the UK. The city broad streets, many of which are now pedestrianised, are packed with historical listed buildings. The most prominent of these being Chichester Cathedral, home to a family of peregrine falcons who return every spring to nest in the turrets of the cathedral. Chichester Festival Theatre lies to the north of the city and is well renowned for the quality of its productions.Chichester Harbour boasts a number of prestigious sailing clubs Chichester, Bosham and Itchenor. Goodwood House, Goodwood Race Course, Goodwood Golf Course and Goodwood Motor racing circuit are all within 20 minutes drive from the village of Westbourne. Goodwood is internationally renowned for events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival, and Glorious Goodwood (horse racing). The South Downs National Park, ideal for walking or cycling is within easy reach of Chichester and Westbourne.
Getting around
There is a bus from the village into Chichester, Emsworth and Havant. This is a very infrequent service, so I would not recommend relying on this solely. The nearest train stations are Southbourne and Emsworth, both about a miles walk. The area is outstanding for cycling, with great rides from the door.
Access

How to get there
Gatwick and Heathrow airports are approx 90km. It takes 1hr 15min to either airport, traffic permitting!! Fast train from London Waterloo to Havant takes 1 hour 20 mins. Train from London Victoria to Emsworth takes about 1hr 50 mins. Should you be travelling from afar, (we have many guests from Europe, New Zealand, Australia and the United States) a taxi can be arranged to collect you from either Gatwick or Heathrow, enabling you to recover from your jet lag before driving.
