Tsuga on the Ridge was the summer home of Burke Davis – an award-winning southern journalist, novelist, and nonfiction writer. He was best known for his popular war histories and biographies. He and his lovely wife Juliet Burnett Davis “re-claimed” two 1800s vintage log cabins, using them as bedroom wings of the modern central home. The kitchen, living and dining areas, one guest bedroom and bathrooms are located in the new construction which joins the two cabins. As you step inside your eyes are immediately drawn to the wall of sliding glass doors. Sweeping mountain views take your breath away. The stars at night are incredible. The wide plank heart pine flooring and vaulted ceiling create an inviting space for family and friends. There is a well-equipped galley kitchen. The Master bedroom in the Master cabin overlooks the Blue Ridge Parkway. The room is furnished with family antiques and a king sized bed covered in lovely linens. The hand hewn logs of the cabin add to the ambiance. A guest bedroom with a queen size bed is located off the hallway which joins the guest cabin to the central living area. The guest cabin has a downstairs bedroom with twin beds. A hidden stair case leads to the fourth bedroom, perfect for kids and located on the second floor of the guest cabin. This bedroom is appointed with twin beds, antiques and art from a renowned regional artist. The beauty of the Blue Ridge may be appreciated from anywhere on this mountain top escape. Guests may also enjoy picking blueberries, hiking the QD Conner trail, hiking to the top of the High Hill (at 3400 feet the highest point in Patrick County) or fishing at nearby Three Ponds. (All are owned by the Tsuga on the Ridge owners.) A lower deck provides a spectacular setting for an al fresco dinner overlooking Rock Castle Gorge. Offsite activities include breakfast at Mabry Mill, hiking the numerous trails of the Blue Ridge Parkway, visiting Rocky Knob, dining at Chateau Morsette, sipping wine at Villa Appalaccia Winery, gazing at Lover’s Leap or indulging at Nancy’s Candy Factory. Golfers may enjoy playing at Old Mills Resort, Primland Highland Course, or Great Oaks. Come relax, and unwind and enjoy all this wonderful Blue Ridge property has to offer!

Great Views, Historical, Clean, Cozy, and Hiking Close-by - We LOVED this home!
We were looking for an interesting place to take our teens/young adults while visiting our kids at Liberty University. At first, we debated because it was 2 1/2 hours away and we weren't sure if we wanted to go that far for just a weekend, but we were SO glad we did! The idea of staying in old cabins was intriguing and it was perfect because the house has all the modern comforts with a rustic feel. It was impeccably clean, and it is obvious upon entering the house that Clara and Brian take pride in their home and pay close attention to details! Everything we needed (or wanted) to make us feel comfortable was right on hand. Clara graciously answered my many questions when we were making our final decision and told us all about the nearby hiking trails. After booking the property, she gave us all the necessary information we might need. The view out back was breathtaking! We were grateful that we could use the property at the bottom of the hill with a large, grassy area and three ponds. My son brought his fishing pole and we all enjoyed the colorful leaves and flowing creek while he was fishing. Be sure to go down there if you stay! On Clara's recommendation, we hiked to the top of Buffalo Mountain for amazing 360-degree views. We were brave and went at sunset and it was some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever experienced. Coming down the steep and somewhat rocky, narrow path in the pitch black is not for the faint of heart, though, even with flashlights. I also highly recommend the Black Ridge Trail at nearby Rocky Knob. It takes you through woods, over a creek, and through a cow pasture (watch where you step), and has beautiful views, also. Be sure to print out any directions to anywhere you want to go ahead of time!!! There is no cell service, so the phones/GPS will not work at all when driving, even into the closest town. Print out or take screen shots to store on your phone of any information about trails, local business hours, etc. because Googling them will not work when you are out and about. There is Wi-Fi in the house, so you can do all your research there. There is a Food Lion that we went to in Floyd about 20 minutes away - stock up on what you need before coming. No cell service in Floyd either. We enjoyed grilling dinner and s'mores (bring charcoal). There are two decks for your enjoyment. Chairs, basic toiletries, condiments, and even firewood are all provided by the generous hosts. We are looking forward to returning!
