About the neighbourhood
Mojacar is unique. This dazzling white hilltop village overlooking theMediterraneanand backed by the peaks of the Sierra Cabrera mountains has a history that can be traced back to 2000 BC.
Old Moorish dwellings clustered together, overlooking the steep narrow alleyways draped in Bougainvillaea, with clumps of geraniums bursting from hidden patios. The local women doing the washing in the public fountain. Donkeys laden with panniers ambling up the hillside create an impression that has provoked this village to be called 'the corner of enchantment'. Yet concealed within this archaic maze is a cosmopolitan world of shops, art galleries, bars, restaurants and banks contriving to mix a perfect blend of ancient and modern.
During the heat of the day the village is a sleepy place when the visitors are sporting themselves on the beach and the villagers are taking their siesta, and even the cats show no signs of life as they doze on sunny doorsteps. But at dusk the village awakes as visitors and locals stroll though the narrow streets and join the lively chatter from the countless little bars. Mojacar illuminates and from the valley below, looks like the fairy lights on a Christmas tree.
The very different world of Mojacar beach just a couple of miles below the village has all the facilities of a modern beach resort with miles of sand and numerous beach bars, discos and shops. For those looking for something more energetic than basking on the beach or floating on the shimmering blue Mediterranean, all manner of water sports can be enjoyed including windsurfing and sailing. Peace and seclusion though are not very far away, for just a mile or so past the Hotel Indalo areTowerBeachand Treasure Island Cove, both popular with naturists.
Sporting enthusiasts staying at Mojacar do not have to confine their activities to the water. At Cortijo Grande the mountains conceal a pretty, nine-hole golf course and Cortijo Cabrera is the spectacular setting for the David Bryant Bowling Centre. Here are also riding stables where Andalucian horses can be hired for riding through the untamed mountain scenery.
