First of all, the property is in a beautiful location and the view is incredible. The sunsets and view of Kealakekua Bay were superb. The location and views and short walk to the bay were exactly what we were looking for.
With that said, there were some significant negatives to the rental. The entire hale/cottage interior was terribly filthy. Not some gecko poop here and there but significant lack of cleaning, especially the floors. They hadn't been mopped for a very long time.
The bath house shower pan was covered with other people's hair in assorted colors and lengths. The floor was caked with ground-in dirt. BTW, the pathway to the bath house is not for the faint of heart. The stairs are very rough & uneven & an accident waiting to happen. The pathway lights to the bathroom don't work. Take a flashlight.
A few days into our stay we came across a posted sign on the wall that mentioned a "Clean Team" we could have contacted to address any housekeeping issues. By then, we'd already scrubbed the bathroom floor, wiped the counters & tables & hand washed the kitchen towels. Be aware there's a substantial cleaning fee.
There was no hot water to the kitchen sink & a prior guest had mentioned this in their review. We found that the flow from the kitchen sink was not sufficient to activate the on-demand waterheater so we had to turn on the bathroom sink up the hill, run down to rinse our dishes in luke-warm water, then run back up to turn the water off!
The bed linens were clean but permanently stained, as were the pillows. Ick! The kitchen towels had a terrible odor, like they hadn't been washed.
FYI, the bedroom is very small & requires you to crawl over your bed mate or crawl out of the bottom of the bed to get up at night.
Despite all this, we would return because of the beauty, serenity & location...if Jeffrey would have us back after reading this review.

This place is beautiful. If you are looking to stay at a place to unplug, get away from the typical hotel affair, city crowdedness and want to reconnect and immerse yourself with nature, then this place is it. I was so happy to find a place like this, after endless searching for lodging accommodations in the hawaiian islands that seemed to just be one (expensive) hotel after the next (i did not want a hotel!). Luckily, we found Whale Spirit. We stayed at Prayer Temple, which is tucked away into the trees and lush ferns of the hillside that will make you feel like it's just you, the green, and the ocean. Keleakua Bay is within walking distance (10 min tops).
It does take a few days to get used to, as the owners describe, but once you do, you'll really love the feel of being here. It's not meant to be a luxury getaway. It's a rustic nature escape with a nice view. It will get hot in the daytime, so we just went on adventures during the day and came back in the afternoon. The bathroom is separate from the room, but it's private. It's a few steps away. A little inconvenient for the midnight potty breaks, but definitely all part of the experience - so bring your headlamps.
Wifi and 4G connection at this cabin is weak, but you can find some pockets of connection at times, just enough for needing to plan and book adventures, and not much else so you can really unplug, which is the main thing.
There will be mosquitos, bugs, and geckos here (nature!) That might take some getting used to. We didn't need to use any repellent so it's not that bad. None of them are venomous. After a few days, we even started to bond with the geckos. My husband even named a few. They're quite cute.
All in all, this was the rustic nature escape i was hoping for. Just make sure that you contact the owner and let him know when you expect to arrive so they can freshen up the place - even if it's not mentioned in the welcome guide.
