Whether you've come from Kona or Hilo, you'll be amazed at the beauty of the area. The drive from either airport is scenic and when you get to Pa'auhau on the iHawaii Belt Road, it is 1 mile to the house, all downhill. Enter the property through a foxtail palm lined driveway, park on the gravel, walk up the stairs to the front porch and open the door to find comfort and open space, tastefully furnished and decorated - everything says 'welcome home'. The living room, dining area and bedrooms are all designed to accommodate up to 10 guests (8 in bedrooms, 1 on a comfortable sleeper, 1 on a down pillow couch). The kitchen is a chef's delight with top of the line appliances; everything one needs - all the small appliances, good knives, utensils, bowls, etc.. 17' of usable granite counter space. The bamboo floor is easy on feet. The carpeted master bedroom has his and her walk-in closets, a California king bed, a 42' flat screen TV, French doors that open to the covered lanai (60 x 9.5', travertine floor. The master bath has an Amazon jungle marble walk-in shower with a built in seat and 2 shower heads. a separate toilet room and an enormous bathtub, The carpeted bedroom at the opposite end of the lanai also has French doors opening to the lanai, a wall mounted 32' flat screen TV. a teak chair from Bali and an ensuite marble bathroom. The third bedroom, also carpeted, has a king size bed and a wall mounted 32' flat screen TV. The fouth and smaller bedroom has a queen size bed, antique birdseye maple chairs (no TV). The teak dining table and chairs seat up to 10. The lighting can be dimmed to suit your mood (as can the kitchen and living room lights). There are linen napkins and placemats, lots of serving plates, bowls and platters. Even baskets to hold supplied paper plates if you don't want to be bothered to load the D/W.... There's a gas fireplace for chilly nights in the living room, a 42' TV tucked into an antique armoire, as well as an Onkyo receiver and CD player, Bose speakers and a well rounded CD collection. The reading room has 3 bookcases with reference works, philosophy, lots of American and Scandinavian mysteries, cookbooks and books about Hawaii, 4 very comfortable chairs, 3 with foot stools. The lanai, sheltered from sun and rain, has a teak table and chairs for 6 and 2 other seating areas. There are stairs leading down to the hot tub. Al the sheets are high count, all the beds are very comfortable and have down quilts as nights tend to be chilly. The full bathrooms have hot water on demand, are all supplied with Pantene shampoo and conditioner, hair dryers, Neutrogena bath wash, and an ample supply of towels, including bath sheets and face cloths. (And yes, toilet paper.) The kitchen has paper towels, paper napkins, garbage bags, detergents (dish and D/W), sponges and cleaning supplies, plastic food storage containers and bags. There's a large pantry cabinet to store your food, and the refrigerator is also large. The laundry room is on the ground floor, detergent and stain remover provided. Whether you've come to explore the Big Island (and it IS big!) or are in need of total relaxation, you'll be happy with your choice of Hale Luana. Honoka'a is at the northern end of the Hamakua coast, in an area known as the 'banana belt' - lots of sun. The town of Honoka'a is 5 minutes away and offers a taste of old Hawai`i - galleries, antique shops, restaurants and The Peoples' Theatre, where first run movies show and famous musicians play (B.B. King, Steven Stills, etc.). There's a super market if you don't want to make the hour drive (beautiful!) to Costco. And if you do go to Costco, there's a large freezer and a pantry cabinet to store everything. On Sundays, the Hamakua market is a few minutes away, offering avocados for 1., papayas for 1., hand crafted silver jewelry, bagels (made by an ex-NYer), delicious Thai food, tropical tacos and live music from 9am to 2pm. A licensed masseuse is available for massages at Hale Luana, with advance notice. Unlike O'ahu, an older island, the Big Island is not surrounded by beaches. The closest beaches are Waipio (black sand), about 20 minutes away and Hapuna, about 40. There are nearby state parks for hikers and bird watchers. There is so much to see and do that it's a good idea to do a little research before your trip if you're coming to explore. If you're coming to relax, you'll find comfort here - books, music, TV with all the premium channels. And there's a hot tub. The caretakers live on the ground floor in a separate apartment, are available should there be questions or a problem. Tourist License / Licencia de turismo N °: TA-054-477-4144-01More

The house had it all from ice maker to TV with all programs. A beautiful house for a great price in an area with few rentals around. A different experience that I certainly recommend. Not sure about the weather of Big Island. Maybe we were...More

About the neighbourhood
Hamakua is beautiful. Pa’auhau had been a sugar cane plantation, is in the “banana belt” - is The Land of Sunshine. While we usually get normal rainfall, it is not unusual to leave rain at the top of the hill on the Belt Highway and find the sun shining a mile down the hill. Conversely, you can leave here in full sun and need your wipers as you reach the top of the hill.
Getting around
To be sble to go to the closest beach (Waipio, a black sand beach), you’ll need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. (All wheel doesn’t qualify.) The road is quite steep and is monitored. The Big Island could fit all the Hawaiian islands on it and have room to spare. It takes time to get from one lovely place to another... and the drives provide beautiful scenery, views to photograph. We have 13 different climates to explore.
