Cottage
Stonecrop is a much loved country cottage with a beautiful garden and small orchard in a stunning part of rural Northumberland. Many of our guests return year on year. It is within easy reach of Hadrian’s Wall whilst being secluded, and surrounded by wonderful walks, woods and fells. There is direct access from the garden, across our adjoining field to the South Tyne river, where guests are welcome to wander and explore and enjoy the peace and quiet, the bird life and the natural beauty. The Cottage is a listed, stone built property, dating back to 1760. It retains much of its original charm and character. The cosy lounge has a beamed ceiling and an inglenook fireplace. The kitchen is light and attractive with windows overlooking the garden on three sides. There is a small cloakroom with separate WC (and adjoining utility area) downstairs with a small study and sofabed. Upstairs there are two comfortable double bedrooms and a single room with bunk beds. The bathroom is well equipped. The Cottage also has good and reliable wifi. The attractive gardens surround the Cottage on three sides and include a large rear garden (with sand pit) together with an established orchard - all of which are wonderfully private. From the garden, there are lovely and uninterrupted views across the valley and onto the fells above. The property is idyllically situated in the quiet hamlet of Eals, which is a cluster of about a dozen houses, situated along a no-through road. The South Tyne river runs alongside and forms the perfect backdrop. The valley is heavily wooded with lovely, unspoilt countryside all around. The local pub is really quite special, and within easy walking distance, and offers delicious pub meals four nights a week (and an a la carte menu for celebrating those special occasions). The valley is a haven for birds including curlews, oyster-catchers, cuckoos and snipe. The birds on the various feeders in the garden are also very special with regular visitors including siskin, woodpecker and mistlethrush. At night you will often hear owls and herons. The night skies are as good as anywhere in the Country. There are super walks from the doorstep in all directions including along part of the Pennine Way, and also along a now disused section of the former Haltwhistle to Alston railway line - which makes for an excellent trail or cycleway. You can take the popular South Tynedale narrow gauge railway line from its Alston terminus to Slaggyford - only 2 miles from the Cottage. Stonecrop is located within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and is conveniently close to Hadrian's Wall and the Northumberland National Park. It is also within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales, the Scottish Borders and the English Lakes. Ullswater, for example, is about a 40 minute drive away. The house has been the much loved holiday home of the present owners for the past 60 years. If you are looking to escape the madding crowds then Stonecrop really does provide the ideal retreat for adults and children alike. We are happy for you to bring a maximum of two dogs providing they are well behaved. For further information about the Cottage go to our own website - search for Stonecrop, Northumberland. Ours is the whitewashed one.

Our 9th year of visiting and you just never get tired of the idyllic cottage and surrounding area come rain or shine. The cottage itself is warm and cosy with a lovely woodstove for those cold wet days. On the hot days it stays cool inside which is welcome. The gardens are wonderful and peaceful to sit in and watch the world go by. Plenty of wildlife about and in easy reach of more stunning countryside. Can't recommend a stay here as highly as it deserves. Wonderful cottage, beautiful area.

Home from home.
Wonderful cottage with fabulous views. There is a garden which attracts many garden birds - bring some food. Easy access to the South Tyne trail for walks (head east to Lambley to go over the viaduct).

Simply idyllic!
This is an absolutely superb cottage in the most idyllic location. We spent our days enjoying some of the spectacular walks in the area and our evenings in the daffodil filled garden watching the lambs playing in the field next door. The cottage was so well equipped and completely exceeded our expectations. Richard and Emma were lovely and prompt to answer any queries. We will be back!

Lovely cottage, beautiful location, Highly Recommended.
It's difficult to overstate how much we enjoyed staying here. As the title says the cottage is just lovely and has everything you need. It's a short drive from Haltwhistle so a great base for exploring the area and the wall and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The cottage has all you need and more and with the underfloor heating in the kitchen along with the wood burner and central heating make this a very warm cosy home. It is set in the most peaceful and quiet surroundings and the garden is great for relaxing or playing with children and there are some excellent linear and circular walks straight from the door. The hosts are extremely helpful and quick to respond to any questions. Overall 5 * and highly recommended.

Wow! ....This magical cottage has it all in such a stunning location!
This cottage really does tick all the boxes for a rural escape ...Stonecrop is one of those hidden gems that makes this place truly special and you will most certainly want to return. Three generations stayed during a week in September. We were blessed with great weather to enjoy the surrounding areas. Walks form the door in abundance along the South Tyne river and beyond. Our children 6 & 9, loved playing on the river, which was just behind the garden, across a gated field that belongs to the property. They spent many an hour skimming stones and fossil hunting! Whilst we sat peacefully on the bench watching over them... the recent purchase of this field has definitely added to Stonecrops charm. Stonecrop has a fabulous garden, and orchard. My personal highlight was the bird feeding station. The cottage provided plenty of feed to keep the birds happy, so make sure you replenish the feeders and watch the huge variety of birds fly back and forth. I had to grab a book from the bookcase to educate myself on the less familiar ones! The barn owl was may favourite spot, swooping in the field in the late evening skies.. so don't forget to look up for the stars on a clear night ... you won't be disappointed! The cottage itself has everything you need to make your stay nice and homely... it's steeped in history and has this unique feel of calm and peace when you step inside.... the welcome gifts and wild flowers was a lovely touch and we enjoyed the bottle of wine in front of the fire that evening. Richard and the team have done a great job of ensuring the safety of guests, with all the comprehensive checks, measures and cleaning routine, that has been necessary for them to operate during the Covid pandemic. We can't thank them enough. We would highly recommend Stonecrop, if you want a trip to spend some quality family time away from it all to unwind.

About the neighbourhood
Within walking distance of the Cottage are several good pubs and local landmarks such as Featherstone Castle near the South Tyne river, whose pools entice fishermen and swimmers alike. The scenery is the main draw, coupled with a sense of undisturbed tranquility and peacefulness. Eals itself is a small hamlet of only about a dozen houses, situated close to the river with wonderful walking opportunities along the dis-used railway line which provides for a popular walk between Haltwhistle and Alston. The famous and impressive Lambley Viaduct is close by, as is the South Tyne narrow gauge railway. The Pennine Way passes by on the opposite side of the valley and the Coast to Coast cycleway is also nearby.
