Hôtel étape. Service et accueil à minima.
Hôtel bien situé. Service minimum. Accueil froid en tout cas pas crétois. Dommage. La station de Matala vaut à elle seule le voyage. Privilégier les commerces locaux et fuyez les hôtels demi pension ou pension complète. Les habitants de Matala savent vous recevoir et vous accueillir comme des amis.

About the neighbourhood
Matala was the ancient port of Phaistos and Gortys and a former fishing community which has developed into a modern holiday center. It is located 4 km south-west of the village of Pitsidia and 75 km from Iraklion. It is built on the coast line of the Messara bay inside a small and picturesque inlet. The turquoise blue sea, and the red disk of the sun which sets in the evening horizon create a hue of colors that evoke novel emotions. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period, following the destruction of Kommos, and the port of Gortys during the Roman period when Gortys was proclaimed capital of Crete by the Romans. The Gortynians occupied Matala at 220 B.C. Ruins of the ancient city are still visible on the sea bed as the ancient city was sunk in the sea. The archaeological pick has unearthed some traces of the palaces built by the nobles from the ancient cities of Phaistos and Gortys. There is also a cave known as 'Brutospeliana' and legend has it that it was frequented by the Roman general Brutus. Owing to its exceptional natural beauty, Matala became the meeting place of the 'Flower Children' in 1968. Although their conference failed to realize, yet they were compensated by the incomparable beauty of the area, which so much contrasts with the concept of destruction and war.

How to get there
From Heraklion Airport, head towards Mires which is about 60km from the airport. When you go through Mires turn left and head straight towards the palace of Faistos. Faistos was the second biggest city of Minoan Crete and it is built on a hill, at an altitude of 100 metres above sea level, in the fertile valley of Messara. From here it is 15km directly to Matala. The hotel is located approximately 300 metres before the centre of Matala on the left hand side. There is a small driveway leading to the hotel and it recognisable by its blue signs. The hotel can arrange pick up from Heraklion Airport if requested in advance for 65 euro extra cost per Taxi (every Taxi can pickup till 4 persons). It is also possible to reach Matala by bus. You must take a bus or a taxi from the airport to Heraklion bus station. Buses leave from here for Matala every 2 hours and the hotel is located 250 metres from the bus stop in Matala.
