Townhouse
The iconic Liddell House was built in 1958 by the wealthy local builder of that name as a penthouse-styled beach-house to be gifted to his daughter. It was designed by his friend, the rfamous architect Peter Yates, of the local Ryder Yates Partnership, and included a number of ground-breaking design concepts. These unique key features have been retained & sympathetically enhanced whilst keeping the house true to the original concept. Liddell House features on Page 29-30 of the 'Ryder & Yates' book by Rutter Carroll. A fantastic & completely unique Townhouse on 3-levels, with stunning panoramic views from four very large windows on two elevated levels of Tynemouth Longsands towards the Boating Lake, Lost World Golf, revitalised Art-Deco styled Park Hotel & Cullercoats. Fantastic
Had a great time staying in this iconic 60’s house. It is amazing inside and the welcome pack was a lovely gesture. It was lovely standing at the window looking out to sea which is just across a road from the house so very easy access to go for a walk on the beach. It is ideally placed to walk into Tynemouth-literally 5 mins, up to the Metro station to go to Newcastle or walk the other way all along the front towards Whitley Bay. We used to live up there so knew the roads but anyone not familiar with the area would have no bother getting a round. You are given a parking permit for your stay and we had no trouble finding a spot. We will certainly look to book this again as it was perfect. A big thanks to Tony and Kath the owners for both their prompt responses to emails and texts and their friendly attitude. Can assure you we will be in touch to book this again

Best View in Town
This is our third stay at Liddell House. Three floors of comfortable living with a fabulous view from all windows. All facilities are here and the little extras left by the owners are very much appreciated. Free parking permit allows you to park for your entire stay in the neighbouring road. Everything is on the doorstep, the beach, the town, bus stops, cafes and a surf school if required. Just sitting in the lounge watching the surfers and the world go by. We had a lovely view of dolphins swimming along the bay. Plenty of places to walk to, Tynemouth town 10mins, Whitley Bay 45mins, Cullercoats 20mins, Tynemouth weekend market in Metro station 5mins. Travel to Newcastle on Metro in less than 30mins. What more could you want - a relaxing holiday with spectacular views. We will be back again.

Excellent accommodation
The location is great, fantastic beach views and sunsets from the house. The beach and bus stops are steps away from the door and a parking permit is provided for those arriving by car. The house is comfortable and two en-suite bathrooms were a bonus. Its reputation for quirkiness is well deserved. Tony, the owner, is friendly and very responsive to emails. I would definitely stay at Liddell House again.

Eccentric apartment - great location and views
Enjoyed a fab week in this 3 storey house which has an amazing location right opposite Tynemouth Longsands. Lounge and kitchen are on the first floor, with bedrooms and bathrooms on the second floor. Both floors have brilliant views over Longsands, looking north towards Cullercoats. House is decorated in an eccentric and amusing style with lovely touches all over. House is well equipped and we needed for nothing. Communication with the owners was excellent with quick and helpful replies. House has a lived in feel, so you don't feel on edge. You are a 10 min walk to the heart of Tynemouth on front street where you will find a Co-op and several pubs, bars and restaurants and a couple of fish and chip shops. You are also just 10 mins from the Metro station but if you have a car a permit is provided for parking. You won't be disappointed if you come and stay, and if you do, make the effort to get up and go down on the beach to watch the sun rise, it is the most amazing way to start the day.

An absolute gem on the North East Coast.
Travelled from Australia to meet up with a friend from Canada to celebrate our 70th birthdays. We wanted self contained accommodation near the beach and chose Liddell House from the Internet as it seemed to offer all we wanted...a spacious aparment with separate bedrooms, overlooking Tynemouth beach and central to all amenities. The 60s decor was an extra drawcard having been teenagers in the NE in the swinging 60s! We were delighted on arrival to find that the on-line description had been no exaggeration and more than met our expectations. It had such a positive vibe and the views were amazing from both the main living area and the bedrooms. Not having transport, the bus route directly opposite the apartment was brilliant. And the location was great for long walks to other towns along the coast, offering breathtaking views and with easy access to the many small trendy cafes. Although we didn't get to meet our host Tony, due to unforeseen circumstances, our various contacts via emails was warm and friendly and we felt we knew him! HIs trust in allowing us to pay after the event and without having requested a deposit on booking was especially touching. Thankyou Tony & Kath for a very memorable week! We've been your best ambassadors since leaving and if ever we pass this way again, we will be sure to stay at Liddell House...and hopefully get to meet you!

What a lovely, touching and heartfelt review. We are absolutely delighted that Liddell House was exactly right for such an important & special reunion to you both. Peter Yates original high-design concepts, were intended to create a beach-house, not just unique in the World, but an optimistic and colourful fun-palace & it still works its magic half a century later. It is fantastic that you are both so-tuned in to the 60's, and enjoyed the environment & setting so much. Tynemouth is a great place to be. Also please accept a very sincere apology from Kath and I that we did not manage to meet up with you both. You will be pleased to know that this has resulted in a bit of a reality check for Kath and I. She is heavily involved with Retro a vintage clothing shop on High Bridge Street in Newcastle that she owns & I am also involved with several diverse time-draining ventures. We really need to focus not just on ensuring that our guests at Liddell House have a great break and lovely memories, but also that we meet them. Hopefully you will both repeat your visit to Tynemouth and we will definitely meet up with you.

An excellent quirky house
With a sea view and 10 minute walk to town this house was perfect. Austin Powers would feel right at home. The two large double beds were clean and comfortable as was the whole house and I can assure you, I am fussy. I stayed with my brother as we were there for the rugby in Newcastle. His daughter lives in Tynemouth and I have rebooked to stay at the house with my wife and family for Christmas. Thank you Tony and thanks for the generous welcome pack. G

What a wonderful unique home to stay in ,Tony had thought of all what was needed to make staying at Liddell house a very comfortable one ,which we thoroughly enjoyed .A grand view of the sea and beach from all the windows, plus lovely late night walks listening to the gentle sound of the waves .Tynemouth has a very good fish and chip shop and a cluster of pubs and restaurants to while away a evening or two ,a very lively but pleasant place to walk to.Such a great house to stay in and lots of 60s memorabilia .Hopefully we will get back to Tynemouth and Liddell House .

Jennifer, Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review. If you love the architecture & design of the 60's, Liddell House is the perfect place to stay, as people become ever more appreciative of what Tynemouth and Northumberland have to offer. It will be fantastic if you come back to visit again in the future. As you know we never canvas for reviews, and feel that for this reason those that we receive are all the more heartfelt and genuine. Thank you once again. All the best, Tony and Kath

About the neighbourhood
A great opportunity to relax, unwind and enjoy a well-deserved break in a uniquely different 60's themed setting - let's face it you probably need a holiday. Only a short few minutes walk away from the renowned Tynemouth Longsands beach, Crusoe's cafe, Tynemouth Boating Lake & the Grand Hotel. You will be 4-minutes walk away from Tynemouth Priory, steeped in 2000 years of history: as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, an Anglican monastery, a royal castle, artillery fort, coastal defence & burial site of several Kings of Northumbria. The Townhouse is very close to the scenic & trendy Tynemouth 'Village' itself with a wide choice of popular cafes, pubs and restaurants. Tynemouth Metro Station is also close by (with it's famous Sunday Market), and with an excellent service that will take you straight in to the heart of Newcastle city centre. A surfer's paradise - Tynemouth is firmly established on the UK Pro Surf Tour & has previously hosted the British National Surfing Championships.

How to get there
The townhouse is very easy to find: it is situated on Grand Parade, Tynemouth more or less equidistant between the Grand Hotel & Park Hotel overlooking the Tynemouth Longsands seafront. From Newcastle upon Tyne: head along the main A1058 Coast Road towards Tynemouth - quite literally situated on the north side of the mouth of the river Tyne. From the north-bound A1 or A19 route towards the Tyne Tunnel: travel through the Tyne Tunnel straight up to the first main roundabout approximately 1 mile away, turn right (fourth exit) on to the main A1058 Coast Road & keep the river on your right & follow the Tynemouth signs. Southbound from Glasgow: Take the M74 to Carlisle, A69 Carlisle to Hexham (watching for the speed cameras) & on towards Newcastle then pick-up signs for the Coast. Tynemouth is 10 miles directly East of Newcastle, on the north bank of the River Tyne literally at the mouth of the Tyne. The A1058 is the main Newcastle Coast Road, which takes you directly east out of the City towards the Coast, the sat-nav will probably take you on a ring-road route, but this will be almost as direct & probably less congested. Southbound from Edinburgh: Take the M73 then M74 route south to Carlisle, then follow the A69 Newcastle directions detailed above (watching for the speed cameras). Alternatively head south on the A1 (again watch for the speed cameras), turning off left towards Cramlington (after about 100 miles) & picking up the A19 Spine Road south towards the Tyne Tunnel. Turn left on to the main A1058 Coast Road & keep the river on your right & follow the Tynemouth signs.
