Holiday Rental House
Our house in La Malartrie is a lovely traditional stone property perched above the Dordogne on the edge of La Roque Gageac. Stone steps lead up to a long terrace with wonderful uninterrupted views along the river to the famous village of La Roque Gageac. Opposite, across the walnut groves in the valley, is the bastide town of Domme on the skyline. The house has three bedrooms - one double and two twin - all overlooking the Dordogne. The double room on the ground floor has a king-sized bed and an en-suite shower room. Upstairs there are two lovely bedrooms with coombed ceilings, each with twin beds and each with a large bathroom off. The terrace ( 9m x 2.5 m) is a wonderful outdoor living space. It's partly covered and has plenty of space to eat or just relax and watch the river...Our house in La Malartrie is a lovely traditional stone property perched above the Dordogne on the edge of La Roque Gageac. When you can tear yourself away from the view, wide french doors open directly from it into the lounge/dining room. There you'll find wi-fi, UK television channels, DVDs and books. La Malartrie is a really superb location for a holiday in the Dordogne. Within strolling distance of La Roque Gageac - designated 'one of the prettiest villages in France', it's set in the heart of the most celebrated part of South West France. No fewer than five castles are within a mile or two of the house and the famous medieval town of Sarlat is only 5 miles away. With the beautiful bastide town of Domme three miles away, Castlenaud just over one and Beynac around two you won't find a more central location to enjoy the best of the Dordogne's 'golden triangle' . In the village itself you'll find a boulangerie, gift and wine shops, a small grocers and several lovely restaurants to enjoy what the French do best! With the river only a short stroll away theres no shortage of places to swim. Canoeing is available from the village as are boat trips and tennis.More

The house is a traditional french style house set in the beautiful village of La Roque. The views from the covered terrace are stunning - you could sit there all day and watch the world float past. If your lucky you will see the hot air balloons take off and skim across the river. If you have to move from the house, the village has a couple of excellent restaurants and Sarlat and Domme are beautiful for a day visit. It's a great place to stay - great welcome from David and Lorna the hosts. Idyllic but plenty to do for all the family if needed.

Marvellous spot, the village is spectacular itself but this spot has such a stunning view back up stream over the whole panorama Lovely set up, classically furnished and the patrons are really helpful

The location and view from La Malartrie was amazing . The House had everything we needed and exceeded our expectations. David and Lorna , (who own the house ) were very welcoming and were always on hand if required. The accommodation was " Authentically French ", spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We would recommend you plan to spend enough time on the wonderful balcony watching life on the Dordogne . It was great to be able to walk into the village in five mins , yet have so much piece and quiet at the house. We plan to go back.

It would be hard not to like LaRoque-Gageac and were sure we had the very best house in the entire village! La Malartrie is indeed a lovely house with stunning views and we spent an inordinate amount of our time sitting on the covered terrace taking in the beauty of the Dordogne. From our vantage point above the Dordogne we watched canoes, gabares, ducks, river otter and even a deer in the river. Excellent information about the house and nearby sights and activities was provided by the owner prior to our arrival--and everything was exactly as described, if not better. The house was roomy, comfortable, clean, and well lit. There were books to read and a television to watch--but we never had the time for either. The very personable owners, David and Lorna Fulton, stopped in once or twice and were happy to answer questions, suggest places to visit, etc . We did telephone concerning a noisy plumbing problem in one of the bathrooms and it was promptly attended to. The spacious, well-equipped kitchen drew nothing but compliments from our group of six women--and that's not been the case in some of our prior rentals. The feeling was unanimous: all six of us would unhesitatingly recommend La Malartrie to someone visiting anywhere near the Dordogne area.

Situated on the Dordogne and set back into the cliffs this accommodation has indeed a magical view but that is where it ended for us . The house had a musty odour, the furniture was old and dated not quaint in any shape or form The television and Internet were not working. David our host did try to rectify this but was not successful. We had booked for four nights but only stayed one. We had been travelling around the the Dordogne area for three weeks and found other accommodation for the same value far more to our liking

The TV and internet were working , they simply could not operate them (in fact they watched a DVD on the TV/DVD and emailed me using the internet). The house is interestingly furnished to reflect its age, character and historic surroundings. Leather Chesterfield sofas and Louis XIV chairs are indeed "dated" and are recognised by anyone who knows as a classic shape and form ; they are in good condition, clean and not musty. From those who informed us that Australia was "discovered in the 1700's", that they did not like French food and the locals speaking the French language was an inconvenience, this is not a surprise.

My family and I had a wonderful stay at Malartrie Number 1. The balcony overlooking the dordogne river is reason enough to book this place. The view is incredible. This vacation rental is also superbly located and a great base for exploring the Perigord Noir. David is a wonderful host and very helpful. Rooms were comfortable and we cooked several meals in the kitchen and found it to be well equipped and very functional. Would definitely return!

We had looked forward to spending time in the French countryside. I spent weeks trying to find a place in Sarlat-la-Canada and finally settled on La Malartrie #1 in La Roque Gageac....I am soooo glad we didn't find a place in Sarlat because we would have then missed out on this gem. David was a wonderful host and has done a remarkable job of making this a fantastic place to stay. It is relaxing and the views are spectacular. I hope to come back back some day and spend an extended amount of time in this lovely place. Thanks David for all the info you sent to us to help us plan our trip....Linda

We loved sitting on the covered porch, and had all of our meals there, overlooking the river. David gave us excellent suggestions for dining, hiking and sight seeing, the house is nice, but not luxurious. The rooms are large, very clean, and well lit. The bathrooms are basic with low water pressure. The kitchen is good for basic cooking only. I recommend it if you do not require luxury, but love a homey place in a wonderful setting.

Our house is special to us and we feel that, even though our guests had a good holiday and managed to eat in the house every night, the phrase "only suitable for basic cooking " is wrong and we are at a loss to understand this comment. We have had many fantastic meals there in our time and though it is an old style French kitchen which reflects the charm and character of the house it has every facility for creating wonderful cuisine. This includes a new cooker(4 rings, fan over, grill) a new microwave, a hand bender, a slow cooker, a new dishwasher, fridge freezer, plenty of sharp knives and a sharpener, a toaster, a kettle , two cafetieres, champagne glasses , champagne ice bucket, wine glasses , coffee cups , tea china, teapot, serving dishes and matching dinner service....etc etc...all very far from basic.

Had a lovely stay at La Malartrie, the views from the balcony are spectacular. We were lucky to have a great firework display on the night we arrived, all viewed from our balcony with a glass of wine in hand! Lots to see and do - take a walk to Beynac or a drive to Domme these are lovely villages, also Sarlat is lively at night with street entertainment and great places to eat.

The elevated and renovated house on 2 levels has ensuite bathrooms for each of the 3 bedrooms and a lovely sunny verandah, great for breakfast as you watch the canoes and river boats go by. It offers wonderful views of the village of La Roque Gageac, which is lit up at night and the hill top village of Domme in the distance across the river. Well situated within close proximity to many famous Chateaux, villages and their markets, beautiful gardens, caves, prehistoric sites and towns of the Dordogne. Activities such as canoeing, cycling and walking are all at the doorstep. I would highly recommend this gem off a place for an extended stay for a group of friends or family. We travelled with our adult children and the house provided lots of space to be together without being on top of each other.

About the neighbourhood
La Roque Gageac has been formally designated 'one of the prettiest villages in France' by the French Government, and who are we to disagree? Clinging to the cliffs overlooking the river Dordogne the the village has evolved, one house at a time, over a 1000 years to have a charm and personality of it's own. The beautiful local architechture with its honey coloured stone, steep perigordian roofs and pigoniers is a delight and pretty villages unfold round every corner. The area around La Roque is steeped in history. From prehistoric cave dwellings, through Viking raids, the 100 years war in the middle ages and the Renaissance, each era has left it's mark. There are five chateaux within a mile or two of the village. Sarlat, with more listed buildings per square metre than any other town ...
