Le Mirador is a perfect place to stay in La Roque-Gageac - we stayed during the heat wave at the end of June/early July with temperatures up to 40 degrees (almost like summer at home!) but the house stayed remarkably cool, with a window facing the rock face behind acting as an air conditioner when open giving a constant supply of cold air! The house looks over the enchanting village of la Roque-Gageac - both historically and visually impressive! David and Lorna made us feel very welcome and at home, and gave us some good tips as to what to do and where to go. La Roque-Gageac is an interesting village with plenty to see, and we enjoyed the 1hour boat trip from the quay. Sarlat market was great - bustling with people but lots of good produce and artifacts. Castelnaud chateau was fabulous, but the Marqeyssac gardens at night (open mostly during the day but only on Thursday nights) was a highlight, candlelit paths, musicians in various places, and you can get food and drinks on the open terrace. We would recommend anyone planning a trip to the area to stay at Le Mirador - one of the best holiday houses we have stayed at. Tim and Linda Adelaide

A wonderful vacation house. As everyone says, the views are spectacular, and enjoying meals or simply a glass of wine on one of the two terraces is a dream. The house itself works well, with a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, etc. The location is spectacular for anyone interested in exploring this region. La Roque Gageac is close to several classic sites (such as the Castelnaud and Beynac castles, the hilltop fortress/bastide of Domme, which you actually see from the terrace), Sarlat (the largest town in the area, with a spectacular market on Wednesdays and especially Saturdays), and other interesting places well worth the beautiful drive to reach. We never got over seeing castles loom over us as we drove to pick up croissants in the morning. Figuring out where to go for what is part of the fun, but our suggestions: the boulangerie in Castelnaud, the butcher in Beynac, the Casino and Carrefour supermarkets (as well as the farmers’ market) in Sarlat, and the wine store in Le Roque Gageac (on the far side of town, up the hill; Helene, the proprietor, is a gem; we just told her what we were making for dinner that night and she always recommended the perfect wine, never more than €12). We mostly cooked on the grill, but had several good meals in restaurants. O’ Plaisir des Sens, just outside of town, had the most sophisticated and creative chef. Le Bistrot, right across from the cathedral in Sarlat, was also very good. There are plenty of other options right in town. The owners David and Lorna are warm and responsive--and live virtually next door. The perfect holiday house!

What can I say, Le Mirador did not disappoint from start to finish! From the moment we booked David was extremely helpful, friendly and informative. He advised us on lovely days out during our stay, restaurant recommendations and was generally just very pleasant to us throughout the build up to our stay. On arrival we were stunned by the beauty of the property. It is wonderfully charming and spacious and we were blown away by the incredibly well stocked kitchen. We enjoy cooking so we were very pleased to find an abundance of utensils, pans and also oils, seasonings and even flour. In our eyes it really was above and beyond what we expected. We had planned a dish on our first night but had forgotten tomatoes and within minutes David had brought us the most delicious tomatoes I'd ever tasted, grown in Le Miradors very own gardens! So kind and again, above and beyond. English TV is available if you fancy an hour in front of the TV with a glass of wine and the ceiling fan provides a little well deserved coolness in the summer heat! We stayed in several locations during our trip and the bed at Le Mirador was by far the most comfortable! I suspected a memory foam mattress underneath that rustic French charm! On to the best bit (yes, it gets better!) The roof top view. Well, it really is the best view we have ever seen, so breath taking day and night! The rooftop balcony is spacious and has a BBQ too. There is also a lovely balcony off of the living area with equally beautiful views. Lorna popped by to say hello and it was a pleasure to meet her and pass on our thanks in person. We would highly recommend the day trips on the bicycles (Bike Bus with Joel) and rowing down the Dordogne. We rented from Pirate Canoes on the 16km trip from Carsac which was a wonderful full day out. Thank you to David and Lorna for your wonderful hospitality - highly recommended cottage staying true to its French routes! If you're planning a stay in Le Roque Gageac, you must stay here!

Le Mirador is a family summer holiday house. It has stunning views over the river and village, and plenty of room for outdoors eating whatever the weather. The house is well equipped and the friendly, helpful hosts are on hand . The bathrooms however need updating . Parking is a problem, the owner assured us , before booking, that it was possible to drive to the door, totally false as it is on a footpath. We did find a place to park, (100 paces away) never sure if it was correct and would have concerns in the height of summer. We were told there were other places to park but this was the closest.

We are completely honest about parking in this ancient village of narrow streets. There is always parking available, about 50 metres away. These people were with us for 2 weeks and raised no concerns with us to allow us to help or rectify things.

We stayed for a fantastic week in Le Mirador - a holiday to remember for all the right reasons. The house is beautiful, well equipped, comfy, clean & cool, you really couldn't ask for more. We made full use of the outside areas, the roof terrace & downstairs veranda offer stunning views of the village & of the river, and a ideal place to do a spot of bird watching, whilst offering you a relaxed, private spot to chill out with a glass of wine or two! The location is great for all the local attractions, all within short driving distance. The owners David & Lorna are lovely, friendly people, they have a great passion & love of the area & it was a pleasure to meet them. We are definitely going to return soon! Thank you

Of all the great holiday homes I have rented, this is right up there. The cottage is small and traditionally furnished, but the terraces make it feel much larger. There is a lovely covered terrace downstairs to shelter from the heat (or rain) and the spectacular roof top terrace to bask in the sun and enjoy evening meals complemented by local wine. The views are out of this world, look up to see the hot air balloons, look down to see canoeists paddling by or straight out to the prettiest village and overhanging cliffs. David was fabulously informative and all the activities he recommended that we had time to do were really worthwhile. Walk to the boulangerie for breakfast croissants, explore the gorgeous alleyways and local shops, cycle to any number of beautiful villages and there are more great places to eat out than we had time for. Canoeing on the Dordogne is a must do and suitable for any level of fitness or lack thereof. Canoe Pirate hire kayaks just 100 metres from the house and there is also a little beach there to swim from. We took our own kayak and Canoe Pirate kindly transported it to Carsac for us (we also hired one of their canoes) so we could all paddle down river without having to paddle up. We had our own mountain bikes but hired electric bikes from Bike Bus for my older sister and her husband. Joel (Bike Bus) delivered and collected the bikes from the house. If you've ever ridden a bike and haven't for some time, get an electric bike... it makes climbing any hill a complete joy and makes the impossible possible for those who may have thought their cycling days were behind them. Very very highly recommend staying here.

We stayed for a week and the Gite was in a beautiful posisition. The views second to none. Inside was lovely, very clean and had everything that you would need. We had two terraces a covered and a terrace open for the sun. We would defiantly go agiain if we were in the area. We met the owners who were lovely, very helpful and easy to get along with.

we loved staying in La Malartie (which is the house attached to the Mirador). The owner was wonderful, very helpful. The accommodations were nice, offering s separate bedroom and bathroom for our college-aged daughter. The bathrooms were okay, nothing special but the rest of the place was lovely. The terrace and balcony could not be beat. Incredible views to the village and over the river. We had breakfast, lunch and happy hour every day on either the upper or lower terrace. Lovely village, close to many wonderful attractions. Crowded during the day but very peaceful mornings and evenings even in peak season.

We stayed at Le Mirador for 4 nights in August 2015. The view is simply amazing. The house is very comfortable too - the beds are excellent. It has a well equipped kitchen which some of the photos on various websites don't really show off very well. Decent wifi access, and freesat TV giving access to UK channels was also helpful for the kids. The only minor issue is parking. You can't park particularly close to the house and have to lug the luggage along a path to the house. But having said that, we visited in high season and we did find a place near the Chateau each time we needed to park. Close to the river and with an easy 5 minute walk into Roque Gageac it really is an amazing place to stay. Quite expensive but it's worth it!

Always nice to hear that someone has had a good holiday. A note about parking; it is possible to park in front of the house but the ancient public path is really too narrow to happily do it all the time so we recommend that our guests park at either end of this path. At one end you are 50 yards from the front door at the other, below the chateau, you are about 200 yards. These 5 spaces are reserved for us and our neighbours (we only have one neighbour) and no others are allowed access. Parking is free. Hope this helps. David

We found the accommodation to be ideal and of a very high standard especially with such a picturesque view from the terraces. The house is well kitted out and had everything we needed for our stay. The village and surrounding area have lots to offer whether it is simply relaxing with a spectacular view or visiting the sights and villages close by. The owners, David & Lorna, were very welcoming and knowledgeable about the local area and also gave practical advice about where to eat and shop. We would have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone. And look forward to returning in the future.

About the neighbourhood
La Roque Gageac is formally designated as 'one of the prettiest villages in France' by the French Government, and who are we to disagree. Stuck to the cliffs overlooking the river Dordogne the houses are built, one above the other, at interesting, odd angles in the golden stone of the region with the stunning perigordian architecture. The village has evolved, one house at a time, over a 1000 years to have a charm and personality of it's own. The area around the village is steeped in history; since the Vikings raided, well before the 100 years war, through the middle ages and each era has left it's mark. There are five chateaux in the area around the village. Sarlat, which has more listed buildings per square metre than any other town in Europe is only 5 miles away. Domme, Castlenaud and B...
