Spent a lovely night in this historic home with our yorkie puppy who thoroughly enjoyed the grounds! The owner was very helpful and pleasant and our stay while short, was hugely enjoyable. The house was clean and tidy and we enjoyed looking at the old books and family pictures. Would recommend it and hope to be back soon for a longer stay…

We stayed for 3 nights & enjoyed our stay very much. The owners hospitality was first class. The house had a lovely atmosphere, most welcoming. It was the first time visiting N. Ireland (having visited family in the South many times) & the whole experience was very positive. Thanks for a lovely time.

From the outside The Alms House look very appealing, and is surrounded by a pleasant garden. The inside however is a very different matter. The property is still filled with photos & portraits of the family that used to live there and in truth it felt slightly odd. The interior is quite dim and gloomy and the walls are mostly all dark wood, an odd mix of furniture from the 1980s and before and the shelves are full of old books. One could argue this provides a real sense of place however it was the musty smell that was the absolute showstopper for us. We could not work out whether the stale smell was coming from the old carpets and rugs or whether there was damp. There were several woodlouse which suggests it was damp. We did contact the owner on the day after our arrival to point out the very unpleasant mouldy smell but the response was simply that this was normal where an old house joined a newer extension...

Booked by Julie Critiqued by mark booked on Booking.com and review put up on TripAdvisor. No wonder you didn't pay the correct amount, Shelves full of books ( one of the most comprehensive collection of books about the history of Ireland you will ever read) and two family photos It must have been so traumatic for you The old carpet in the area you referred to is approx 6 years old The old to new comment was trying to make you aware that the area you said smelt of damp is where the two parts of the house meet If only you had beed so observant of the amount you were meant to pay instead of being underhand about the amount of rooms you required.I have had an agency check the smell you and only you have ever smelt and they think it may be the old books And on the subject of the lack of light the house is listed so you have to keep the windows etc the same size

We arrived on a Saturday afternoon to the wonderful Alms House. Upon entering the kitchen, there was a wonderful welcome basket filled with all the essentials. As you explore the house, you wonder at the quirky beauty of the house...history seems to come alive inside. The nooks and hideaways where you can sit and enjoy the garden, the conservatory is perfect for reading or just chatting. The bed in the master bedroom is stunning, the bed is comfortable and huge, the en suite shower room is very modern supplies all the hot water you need. The gardens are stunning, the roses are in bloom and the fragrance is amazing. just sitting in the garden with a glass of chilled white wine is heavenly. Back to the kitchen, there is a dishwasher and all the cooking pots and pans, plates and glasses that you require. A coffee machine is also there for your convenience. There is a small brekfast bar for informal dining and the most amazing formal dining room. If you are a reader, you will be amazed at the amount of books to fit any taste. We only had the house for 2 nights but it is THE most amazing house to just relax and enjoy each others company. The resident cat is also very sweet....please spare her a stroke and a kind word. I cannot wait to return to the Alms house

Amazing scenery. Friendly village with a couple of good pubs. The Cuans Fish and Chips are warmly recommended. At the Alms House Philip had done all he could to accomadate us including the supply of wecoming staples such as bread and milk and an appreciated extra bed.

The Alms house is so much more than the beautiful pictures on trip advisor. Peaceful, historic, calm and comfortable are the words that come to mind. The house is fully stocked with everything you need. We enjoyed our morning tea in the sunroom with the soothing sound of sheep in the back yard. The Mourne mountains can be seen on the horizon. Castle Ward(across the road) allows a quiet walk at sunset or dawn (no crowds). It is handy to Downpatrick and the site of St. Patrick's grave. Strangford Loch is down the road and has a variety of wonderful pubs and history to discover. Belfast is an easy drive only an hour away. Philip and Elaine are the most wonderful and helpful hosts that you can imagine. The Alms House is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a holiday.
