Located at the entrance to Strangford village overlooking Castle Ward Bay, next to Old Court wedding venue, less than 1 hr to Belfast, approx 2 hrs to Dublin. Ideal for wedding groups, friends or special family occasions. A perfect base to explore Ireland. As you enter Strangford village you cannot miss the landmark church perched to your right on Quarry Hill. Saved from ruin by its local owners, the church has been lovingly restored and sympathetically converted into stunning self-catering tourist accommodation. Passing through the original wrought iron gate and up the steps you enter the leafy church grounds. The path leads you directly to the imposing main entrance set in a striking blue classical façade. You enter the church via the vestibule, with a stone floor worn by countless feet since 1846. Double doors open into the sanctuary, this huge light filled space is the centrepiece of the church featuring double height ceilings, ornate cornicing and plasterwork, wooden panelling and full height Georgian windows. The open plan sanctuary has 4 zones: kitchen, dining, lounge and TV - a fantastic social space. Overlooking the sanctuary on the mezzanine level is a gallery with glass balustrades. This is reached from the sanctuary via a staircase woven into the original church pulpit. Settle down up here with a book and enjoy fantastic views towards Castle Ward Bay. The modern high specification kitchen is equipped with everything you might need. All the expected appliances are present with some nice extras such as a wine cooler and coffee machine. The dining table can accommodate up to 12 people. A wood stove (logs provided) forms a focal point for the lounge area with plenty of comfortable seating. Tucked into an alcove in the corner of the sanctuary is a TV area, with a 50” internet enabled TV and DVD. The sanctuary also has a Bluetooth sound system so you can stream your favourite playlists. There is superfast broadband with full wireless coverage throughout the building. To the back are 3 ground floor bedrooms and a family bathroom. Upstairs on the mezzanine level are a further 2 bedrooms. All bedrooms have superking beds with high quality comfortable mattresses. Bedding and towels provided. Two bedrooms have an option to be converted to twin rooms upon request. All bedrooms have an internet enabled TV, desk and ample storage. 4 of the five bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with large showers. The 5th has direct access to the family bathroom which has a free standing bath and separate shower. Modern heating and hot water systems work seamlessly in the background with the option to control directly should you wish. A laundry and drying room is provided in the grounds adjacent to the church side entrance. This building can also be used as a secure lock up for bicycles, golf clubs or other equipment. The church is elevated above the street level and surrounded by mature trees providing further privacy. There are views across rolling green fields and to Castle Ward Bay. The grounds are fully enclosed by traditional stone walls providing a safe enclosed space. Set mainly in lawn the garden includes a barbeque area and additional seating areas where you can sit back and listen to the calls of Curlews and Oyster Catchers in the Bay. The church is child friendly with safety features considered within the design. Stairgates, travel cot and high chair are available. A toy cupboard will keep both the young and young at heart occupied. A generous welcome pack of local produce and wine is provided. All essentials such as toilet rolls, bin bags, washing powder, dishwasher tablets and cleaning products are provided. The church layout lends itself to corporate events and training/activity days. What can I say? An absolutely amazing place to stay and entertain family and friends. I’d a family get together at the start of November and I couldn’t recommend it enough. Everything you need for a comfortable relaxing stay. The owners, Marty and Melanie have restored this old Church to the highest standard. They have thought of everything, and catered for our every need. Their attention to detail and tasteful decor makes this the perfect place to stay in Strangford. Definitely a place everyone should experience.

I absolutely loved my stay in this spectacular renovated church! The owners have invested so much time and attention to detail in the conversion and their attention to detail has really paid off! It is truly a one of a kind stay filled with beautiful touches which make for a unique stay. The owners themselves are amazing too! They literally could not have done anything more to make us feel welcome and to ensure our stay was perfect! The beds are so comfy, the bath is ideal after a cold sea swim and the fire ensures that it all feels toasty and warm. I loved it and will certainly be back!

This is our secound time visiting The Church’ and we will definitely be going again. we have stayed as a couple and we enjoyed it so much we returned as a family and both times we could not have asked for more. Historical architecture is just the first amazing thing you see. The inside is amazing!! it’s beautifully decorated and such a well finished décor, rooms are immaculately finished and absolutely spotless! The main thing for us as a family was there was absolutely nothing that we needed! The kitchen has everything, little things that you would need even down to child’s cutlery. Every little thing you need is there. So if you’re into cooking on vacation this is a cooks dream . Strangford itself is an amazing place! Some lovely little cafes and restaurants, Beautiful walks fantastic mountain biking and lovely views, all on the door steps of the church. Hopefully we will get to revisit again as I can’t say I have ever stayed in such an amazing property.

Thanks to Marty and Melanie for being wonderful hosts during a weekend I spent with four other friends in their beautifully renovated church! It’s was a perfect sanctuary and an ideal setting to relax and catch up with each other. The luxurious bedrooms and five bathrooms helped us have a boutique hotel feel whilst having the convenience of self catering. We were walking distance away from pubs and restaurants. We highly recommend the Artisan! Castleward is five minutes walk away and we spent hours walking there, as well as a quick boat trip to Portaferry. We even fitted in a swim in the sea! The church has everything needed for a weekend away and Marty and Melanie were so helpful and kind. We loved getting to ask Melanie (the talented architect who restored the church) all about the building. A wonderful weekend and we will definitely be back soon!

Stayed here over a long weekend in mid Sept with friends and their children - an exceptionally good spot - having lived abroad in several European countries and travelled extensively for work, this tasteful renovation easily matches anything I have seen or stayed in before. Incredibly well renovated and refurbished - perfect for a large group to explore this area of Co Down, or simply catch up together and stay in Strangford. A great gas BBQ is included, plenty of seating and garden space. We brought MountainBikes and I was impressed just how big the park and trails are in Castleward. Good restaurants / pub are just short stroll away too. Everything a group would want for a magic weekend away - world class! The owners Marty and Melanie were also extremely helpful in making our stay a very memorable one. I can thoroughly recommend this to anybody looking somewhere a bit special and somewhere you will still remember decades later.

We recently booked Quarry Hill Church for my daughter's wedding at the nearby Old Court venue. It was absolutely superb. Marty and Melanie have lovingly restored this beautiful old church to the highest specification and the attention to detail is fantastic. The five roomy double bedrooms, most ensuite, the generous living area and the kitchen are extremely well appointed. Marty was a terrific host. In all my dealings with him before our arrival he was courteous, efficient and constantly assured me that nothing would be a problem. And neither it was. We had 3 small grandchildren and they were all catered for as well. I cannot recommend highly enough Quarry Hill Church as a family stay over.

What an amazing place this is! I cannot describe how incredible it is! Marty and Melanie are such thoughtful hosts and made us feel so welcome and made sure we always were taken care of. Strangford is beautiful, with a charming little village and lots of beautiful walks nearby. But this restored church is the real attraction! We couldn’t wait to come back to it each day. They have done an amazing restoration and I loved seeing all of the love and care they put into it. It is so beautiful inside, and so roomy. There were five of us and we all had our own bedrooms and bathrooms, all beautifully decorated. The place is perfectly clean. I cannot say enough about it! One of the most amazing places I have ever stayed! Thanks again Marty and Melanie!

Quarry Hill Church is just fabulous! A stunning conversion of a lovely old church and the interiors are beautifully done. We would love to go back to stay! The location is great, a little stroll down to gorgeous Strangford, great restaurants and the loch. The owners have thought of everything and were super helpful and kind on booking and arrival.

The old Presbyterian Church in Strangford has been lovingly restored by Marty & Melanie and is a great place for up to 10 people to gather together and enjoy. Bedrooms and bathrooms are modern and smart. The main lounge / kitchen / dining area is where the congregation used to gather and where we happily gathered for drinks, food and chatter. I wonder what those rather serious Victorian worshipers would have thought of our happy convivial chats around the table? Marty was very helpful throughout the booking process and made some great recommendations for food, shops and trips. Thank you. We loved the outdoor space; being able to walk to the village shops; taking the ferry across to Portaferry and the fabulous NT Castle Ward house nearby. If you want a longer day trip, go to Tollymore Forest Park, Bryansford - utterly amazing scenery. The only small ‘issue’ we had was private car parking - there’s none at the property itself and you have to judge the best place on the busy road opposite to position your vehicle. A small price to pay for such a characterful and memorable stay. We would love to return one day. Many thanks.

Booked Quarry Hill for a group retreat and everything was absolutely perfect. All communication with Marty was spot on and the accommodation itself was outstanding. Our guests were delighted with their rooms and all facilities were first class. Kitchen was super well equipped, bathrooms and showers were modern and luxurious. We couldn’t recommend this any more if you’re looking for character, location, modern convenience and style. 10/10 We’ll be back!

About the neighbourhood
Strangford is one of Ireland's most beautiful coastal villages. Located at the mouth of Strangford Lough the Viking name means 'Strong Fjford' due to the very fast tidal currents. A designated area of outstanding natural beauty and national marine reserve Strangford lough offers a host of activities from scenic walks to adventure sports. For a small village Strangford is blessed with many local amenities, shops, renowned restaurants and traditional Irish pubs. Strangford is connected by ferry to the town of Portaferry on the other side of the Narrows. An attraction in itself the ferry dates back to 1180 and is one of the oldest recorded ferry crossings in the world. Castle Ward Estate (a.k.a. GoT Winterfell) adjoins Strangford village.
Getting around
Once in Strangford you can park up and everything is within easy walking distance. Car is the most convenient way to get to Strangford although it is linked by bus service to Downpatrick and onwards to Belfast.
