Le Rouquet is in the old part of Castelnaud la Chapelle. The picturesque village runs down the hillside from the medieval castle to the River Dordogne and the property lies midway between the two. It is built in the local style of honey coloured stone, has a sunny south facing aspect and wonderful views across the valley from the windows and the terrace. Le Rouquet has been renovated to form two independant holiday gites which can be rented separately or together at a discount. The garden apartment is light and airy and sleeps up to 4 people in comfort. It consists of a large fully equipped kitchen with table and chairs if you do not want to eat outside on the terrace. The beautiful sitting room has stone walls and oak beam features and the sofa converts into a King size bed. Lovely ...Le Rouquet is in the old part of Castelnaud la Chapelle. Lovely stone steps lead up from the sitting room to the bedroom which is prettily decorated and has a double bed, cupboard and chest of drawers and has a lovely view over the valley. It also benefits from its own outside door. The modern tiled bathroom has a large shower and heated towel rail which ensures it is always comfortably warm and towels are dry. The terrace and patio are for your sole use and are a wonderful place to sit and relax and watch the hot air balloons drift overhead in the evening whilst having a drink and perhaps also watching the swallows and swifts playing in front of you. Le Rouquet is an ideal base for those wishing to explore this picturesque area of medieval villages and castles, markets and prehistoric sites. There are wonderful well marked walks from the doorstep through the unspoilt countryside. The village has a range of shops, cafes and restaurants all within a few minutes walking distance of the apartment. Tourist License / Licencia de turismo N °: N/AMore

Had a great week at La Rouquet apartment and wouldn't hesitate to stay again. The location is perfect, close to a lot of places to see. Outside area is really nice - enjoyed chilling ot there in the evenings after busy days, looking over the village, seeing the hot air balloons floating by and listening to the birds. Apartment has a homely feel to it and it's well equipped. Caustelnaud as a base is ideal, fantastic butcher and boulangerie. Quiet and peaceful but this is at the beginning of the season so not sure how about summer months. We'd recommend Les Machicoulis for evening meal or drink. It has a terrace with absolutely beatiful views of the village and castle. Menu is small but fresh, local and not your avarage tourist food unlike the other restaurants down by the river.

We had an absolutely fantastic week....we enjoyed everything about it, pate, wine, cafes, bread, canoeing, walking, swimming in the river...it was fabulous. The area and surroundings is breath taking. I did wonder how our 10 year old would cope without the normal swimming pool, holiday complex set up but she didn't miss it at all. We all got so much from the holiday, the mix of art, culture, history and activity was perfect...I was very sad to leave and I am sure we will want to go again at some point. The apartment was perfect, really comfortable and very well equipped, the views lovely. As we are so lucky to live in a particularly picturesque part of the UK surrounded by surf and moors and rivers, we sometimes don't really match what we have at home when we go away but this gave us something different, exceeded all expectations and many memories that we will all cherish.

My biking partner and I had the opportunity to stay at Le Rouquet Garden apartment (right below Le Rouquet's Balcony apartment) last May for a week of road biking in the Dordogne and Lot valleys. The building housing the two apartments is situated in the village of Castelnaud, below the castle. Visually, the location is striking. The apartment is set up as a one bedroom, and sofa bed in the living room, which could accomodate 1-2 couples or a small family. The Garden apartment has been restored, with newer furnishings and appliances in the kitchen. There is a washing machine available for both apartments. We were able to eat all of our breakfasts outside on the garden patio, admiring the view of the homes below and across the nearby valleys before setting out on daily rides. Coming back we would use the patio again to relax with a drink and snacks. We met the couple from NZ who had the Balcony apartment for an extended stay (with similar stays in the previous years) and enjoyed the village's art festival while we were there. I found Judy and Paul easy to work with when reserving our week. We were met by the local housekeeper who, with her daughter's translation assistance, reviewed the Garden apartment with us and answered questions that we had. At the time of our stay there was no wifi, but we were able to get it at the cafe at the base of the village. If you are fascinated by the history, architecture, and aesthetics of medieval France I would highly recommend staying in Castelnaud at Le Rouquet's Garden or Balcony apartments.

We spent two weeks in this beautiful garden apartment in the village of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle in Dordogne. It was the holiday of a lifetime, living among ancient cottages built into the hillside below a 13th century castle and above the magnificent Dordogne River. The apartment was exactly as it appeared in photos on the website, if not better. It was well equipped, and with family photos, local photography and artwork it felt "homey" and well cared for. We were given good instructions to find our way there and plenty of local information about things to do in the area, including maps for lots of walks through the countryside. We enjoyed lying on the sun beds in the warm evenings while hot air balloons floated overhead. We didn't miss TV and made use of the small library of books on the apartment. There was free wifi at the cafe-bar down by the river. Access to the castle or to the river was up or down steep, sometimes cobbled paths, good for us to keep fit after our daily visit to the boulangerie! If we didn't live on Australia we would be returning regularly as it was such a great experience.

We stayed in this lovely apartment for a week and had a wonderful time. The apartment is by far the best equipped that we have ever stayed in and was spotlessly clean on arrival. It is ideally situated for visiting many of the attractions in the Dordogne or, should you prefer, just relaxing on the terrace and soaking up the sun, watching the swallows performing, and the occasional hot air balloon drifting past. I would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone with full mobility - the climb from the church to the apartment could prove too much for some.

About the neighbourhood
Castelnaud is in an area of exceptional beauty with pretty medieval villages and castles to explore. Nearby Sarlat,LaRoque Gageac, Beynac and Domme are outstanding examples of villages with beautiful medieval architecture and all within just a few kms. Other attractions include the colourful markets selling local produce, formal gardens and the many prehistoric sites including the famous Lascaux caves with their wall paintings. Our favourites are:-the garden at Marqueyssac with its unique style of topiary and marvellous views over the Dordogne valley and across to Castelnaud - we like to walk there from Le Rouquet to give the car a rest;-the walled village of Domme with its fortified gateways into the town and the views over the river and the countryside below;-the Saturday market at Sar...
Getting around
A car is vital to get the best out of the area but if you wish to travel slightly slower there are a couple of bicycle hire offices in the village.
