Stonefold Cottage is nicely decorated and furnished and has a very spacious feel. It is extremely well equipped - I cannot think of anything lacking in the way of everyday necessities - one of the best I can remember staying in from that point of view. Space in the bedrooms is maximised by the omission of wardrobes - which was a bit of a suprise but there is plenty of drawer space and clothes can be hung up in a built-in cupboard outside the bedrooms. Finding the cottage was relatively easy as there are road signs to the farm from the village of Fyvie. It is a few miles from the village but, being in an elevated position, the views are charming and it is a delight to be so quiet and to stroll along the lanes to make the acquaintance of the sheep and cows. Once inside the cottage it was great to have wifi and a good television with freeview and a DVD player. The dining table is a decent size and the dining chairs, as well as the lounge chairs, are comfortable. The location makes a good base for days out exploring the coastline and the castles of Aberdeenshire. The hosts are very helpful and we appreciated the care they took to make everything easy and enjoyable, including a bottle of wine on our arrival.

Location is fantastic with views across Buchan. Quite central for visiting this part of NE Scotland. Despite being on a working farm there was very little noise from livestock or machinery. Children loved playing with Meg, the farm dog, and watching sheep being moves and silage being cut and baled. Rowan Cottage is modern, fully equipped and, with laminate floors throughout, is easy to keep clean. Everything you need for a week's holiday is provided, except food, obviously. The only item we looked for but couldn't find was a soup ladle but I'm sure Shirley would have found us one if we had asked. Our only adverse comments, which reflects the overall quality of this property, was a lack of wardrobe space in bedrooms, although there is ample drawer space, laminate floors mean that sound carries through the house and a small part of the access road is a bit rough for an average family car. If these comments are the best I can come up with then any reader will surmise that this is a quality property which I have no hesitation in recommending.

We stayed 10days in the Bothy and we had a wonderful time. Shirley and Neil are extremely helpful and friendly. The Bothy was cosy and very well equipped. Everyone who came to visit us loved the cottage and the area that we were in. I would highly recommend Stonefolds and will certainly return again.

About the neighbourhood
Fyvie lies alongside the River Ythan, famous for the pearl mussels found in its many deeper sandy pools, or pots and was once known as 'the Rich Rig of Scotland'. Fyvie is host to Fyvie Castle reputed to be home to some of the ancient Scottish kings dating back to the 12th-century. Bring your children to visit Fyvie Castle - the Spook Squad castle - and hunt for the ghosts yourselves. Interested in wildlife and birds, a recent RSPB survey on our farm identified 22 species of birds, several of these are of conservation concern. There is a good range of wildlife on and around the farm and guided tours can be arranged. All the attractions of the area are only a pleasant drive away on quiet roads. Sample the whisky trail; visit some of the numerous castles or the small fishing villages an...
