About the neighbourhood
As the former 'slate capital of Wales' Blaenau Ffestiniog has a strange, compelling beauty. Screes of broken slate tumble down steep-sided mountains, mixing with Snowdonia's natural grandeur. Glimpse into Blaenau's unique history at the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, one of Wales's most successful tourist attractions. Make a day of it and travel here by the narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog. Bring your bike/s – a new lakeside cycle trail along Tanygrisiau Lake and a specialist mountain biking downhill route at Llechwedd, opened in 2012. Recent town centre improvements have revitalised the shopping area and Britain's first pedal-powered velorail attraction, connecting Blaenau Ffestiniog with Trawsfynydd, opens soon. Nearby is the charming Italianate village of Portmeirion, famously ...
Getting around
In addition to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway, the Blaenau Ffestiniog railway station has standard rail links to Llandudno Junction for direct trains to Cardiff, Chester, London and Manchester. Local buses run to Porthmadog (via Minfordd for Portmeirion) and Dolgellau. There are two local taxi firms, whose contact details are in the information folder in the cottage.
