About the neighbourhood
Pittenweem - its name is Gaelic for place of the cave - is a working fishing port, its busy harbour being the main landing point for the daily catch. It is a small village of some 1500 inhabitants, with a history not just of fishing and trading but of art too. In August over 100 artists exhibit at the annual Pittenweem Arts Festival and over 30 artists make their permanent home here. The village is blissfully situated, white houses with red pantiled roofs tumbling down to harbour and spreading up and beyond to the fields above. It is situated between Anstruther with its bustling harbour, the Fisheries Museum, supermarkets, various shops and renowned restaurants and the quieter village of St Monans, home to an excellent fish restaurant.
Getting around
Pittenweem is a very well stocked village with a butchers, bakers, chemists, hairdresser, fish and chips shop (many think it's the best on the coast), a few pubs, the wonderful Cocoa Tree chocolate and teashop, the Heron bistro on the High Street, and the new Pittenweem Inn on the outskirts. This is a haven for art lovers, for foodies, and for those who simply want to enjoy the unique atmosphere of an historic village - you can still visit the cave that once housed a hermit and gave the village its name. This area is particularly attractive to golfers.
