Winter brings cool and wet weather to Jersey, but temperatures usually don’t dip below freezing and snow is relatively rare. That means you can still soak up the island’s natural beauty. Walking and other activities require bringing along lots of layers and just-in-case rain gear, but you’ll be in good company. Locals love the outdoors, and some even swim in the winter.
In the beginning of December, Jersey kicks off Fete de Noue with a parade through St. Helier. Throughout the season, there are traditional markets, music and singing, and buckets of holiday cheer.
Bargain-hunters love the island’s tax-free shopping during the holidays, so expect plenty of joyful shoppers eager to snap up those last-minute gifts.
Some of the most popular attractions close for the winter season, but one notable exception is the Jersey Zoo. Feeding time at the gorilla enclosure is always a hit with kids.
Spring brings lovely warm weather back to the Channel Islands, and visitors who beat the summer rush will be rewarded with that just-right combination of warmer days, smaller crowds, and better hotel prices.
When Jersey explodes into bloom come spring, it’s breathtaking. You can see meadows dotted with thousands of deep purple Jersey orchids on National Trust land at Le Noir Pré.
Elizabeth Castle, a 500-year-old fortress on an island near St. Helier, makes a great springtime outing. You can get there by ferry, or you can stroll over at low tide.
Spring is the perfect time of year to taste the island’s famed Jersey Royal potatoes. Their season runs from March to July, and during this time you can find them on local restaurant menus or at farm stands along country roads.
Jersey is way more crowded and more expensive during the summer, but in return you get the warmest and driest weather of the year. It’s a nice trade-off when you consider just how many beaches you can hit up. For foodies, there’s also loads of al fresco dining.
Book ahead if you’re planning a summer getaway to Jersey. Since it’s such an easy flight from London, prices tend to spike on weekends, though summer weekdays can be competitive, too.
Summer is a season of celebration on Jersey. The Battle of Flowers, held every August, brings flower-studded floats and two parades (one daytime, one evening) to the streets of St. Helier.
Whether you prefer the sheltered bays of the south or the wilder waters in the north, summer is the perfect time to swim, paddle, boat, and explore the sea that surrounds Jersey. Don’t miss favorites including St. Brelade’s Bay Beach and Green Island Beach.
As cooler weather settles over the Channel Islands, tourists head home and leave Jersey to the locals. But it can still be a great time to visit, as September and October tend to stretch the warm days of summer well into fall. November is often the rainiest month, so pack wisely if you come later in the season.
Fall is a golden time to visit Jersey. The trails at St. Catherine’s Woods and the Forgotten Forest at Val de la Mare Reservoir are covered in vivid yellows as the leaves change in autumn.
Food festivals dominate the Channel Islands in the fall. A few favorites include Tennerfest (restaurant meals for 10 pounds), an annual cider festival, and a celebration of another island specialty: apple-based black butter.
The National Trust for Jersey has events throughout the year, but in fall it goes all in on spooky candlelit tours of historic places like 16 New Street Georgian House in St. Helier.
